Chapter 20

Harmony sat on the couch feeding one of the twins while Melody gently patted the other baby's back. Lyric had taken a few minutes for herself and was in the shower, leaving her sisters on baby duty.

"What you got planned today?" Melody asked.

"Nothing really…. Other than Nick want me to bring him lunch."

"I still can't believe he fuck with you after finding out you dyking."

"First of all, I'm not dyking, and secondly, it’s not like I lied.” She rolled her eyes.

"Harmony, but you did lie."

"Not really."

"Sis, you told that man Skyy was a coworker who got you drunk while y'all was out of town and took advantage of you."

"And?"

"And that's the furthest thing from the truth. You got him thinking it was a one-time thing."

"Okay, Melody, damn. Shut up."

Right on cue, Lyric walked out of the hallway wearing a towel wrapped around her body and another around her hair.

"What’s funny?”

"Mind yo business," Harmony and Melody looked at each other before answering in unison.

"Both of y'all can kiss my ass." Lyric gave them the middle finger.

That only made them laugh harder.

Shaking her head, Lyric disappeared back into her room while Harmony and Melody continued talking for a few more minutes. Eventually, Harmony glanced at the time before carefully placing the sleeping twin into the bassinet beside the couch.

"Aight, I'll be back."

After grabbing her purse and keys, Harmony headed downstairs and climbed into her truck.

A few minutes later, she was pulling into Jay's Backyard Barbecue.

The place was packed for lunch, and what she thought would be a quick stop turned into almost a thirty-minute wait.

By the time her order was finally called, she was ready to start eating Nick's food herself.

With a large tip and hot links sitting on the passenger seat, Harmony plugged the address into her GPS and headed toward his job.

The drive took her across the city and into an industrial area filled with warehouses and trucking companies.

Following the directions, she eventually pulled into the parking lot of a small warehouse and found a spot near the entrance.

After sending Nick a text letting him know she was outside, Harmony killed the engine and settled back in her seat while she waited.

A few minutes later, Nick came walking out of the warehouse wearing a navy-blue jumpsuit and steel-toe boots.

As he made his way across the parking lot, Harmony found herself smiling because seeing him come from work looked good on him.

The job hadn't fixed everything between them, but it had given him purpose, structure, and something to focus on besides her.

By the time he reached the truck, she was already reaching across the center console to unlock the door. Nick climbed inside and immediately leaned over to kiss her.

"Hey baby."

"Hey."

Once he settled into the seat, Harmony grabbed the brown paper bag and handed it to him.

"Thanks, baby."

"You're welcome."

Before letting him touch the food, she reached into the cup holder and handed him a bottle of hand sanitizer.

“Use this first."

"Yes ma'am," Nick laughed.

Harmony watched him rub the sanitizer into his hands before he finally opened the bag. Wasting no time, he grabbed a hot link, took a bite, and immediately went back for more, making her wonder if he'd eaten anything all day.

Reaching over, she stole a few fries and popped them into her mouth.

"This shit fye, ain't it?"

"Hell yeah," Harmony nodded in approval before going on.

"Now I see why it took forever."

"I was wondering what was taking so long."

“So, how you liking the job so far?” She changed the subject.

“I fucks with it… I mean they work us hard, but I like staying busy. It makes the day go by fast."

“I love this for you, baby. I know it’s not what you’re used to, but it beats you being in the streets.”

“You right, and although the money not coming in as fast, I ain’t got to worry about going back to jail,” Nick shared.

“What about your coworkers? They cool or you more so stay to yourself.”

“Everybody in this motherfucker cool. It’s like, ninety percent men that work here, so it aint’ no drama or catty shit. Shid, even the big boss cool as fuck…. Matter fact, there that nigga go right there.” Nick pointed.

Harmony followed the direction he was pointing and immediately spotted a Maserati pulling into the lot. The second the driver's door opened, her stomach dropped.

Out of all the warehouses in Chicago, Nick had somehow ended up at the one owned by Legend. The odds of that should've been impossible, yet there he was.
