CHAPTER FOURTEEN
THE SERVICE LIFT
The roof opened above London rain.
Not heavy enough to end the gala.
Enough to turn stone dark and make every light below look sharper.
The museum roof had been prepared as a private smoking terrace. White awnings. Bronze heaters. A narrow bar with no staff because dinner service had pulled everyone downstairs.
Helena and I stepped into the cold wearing wet silk and the expressions of women who had left an argument unfinished.
Samuel emerged from the stairwell twenty seconds later.
He did not approach.
He positioned himself beneath the far awning where the lapel camera could see the terrace reflected in a black window.
He wanted us careless.
We gave him choreography.
Helena took a cigarette from the bar though neither of us smoked.
I lit it for her.
The flame illuminated our faces.
“Do you think your husband knows what you are?” I asked loudly enough for the directional microphone.
She exhaled smoke.
“Better than yours.”
The line was designed to sound cruel.
It still cut.
I held the response inside the operation.
“Marcus brought photographs into my home.”
“Nathan watches you collect men and calls it marriage.”
Samuel shifted beneath the awning.
Good.
The fake hostility created the story Arthur expected.
Rival wives.
Unstable alliance.
Sexual jealousy breaking business judgment.
I stepped close to Helena.
“And yet your mouth was between my legs yesterday.”
Her eyes warmed despite the performance.
“Today too.”
She kissed me.
Not fake.
The operation did not require pretending desire.
Only letting Samuel misread what the desire meant.
I pushed Helena against the black window. The reflection showed two women in evening gowns while the city and the hidden camera watched.
My hand moved beneath her dress.
Her cunt was still wet from the lift.
I touched her slowly, making the movement visible through the silk without exposing enough to become evidence we could not control.
Helena moaned against my mouth.
Samuel came one step closer.
His hand touched the inside of his jacket.
Probably adjusting audio.
Possibly sending the feed.
Nathan’s signal vibrated twice in my ear.
File located.
Marcus’s voice followed through the concealed receiver.
“Three minutes.”
Helena heard the same.
She looked into my eyes.
The plan required Samuel’s attention for three more minutes.
Her hand opened my gown at the slit.
Cold air touched my wet cunt.
The risk became real enough that my body stopped distinguishing operation from appetite.
“Tell me what Marcus saw in the tower,” she said.
The microphone would record the name.
Useful bait.
“He saw me ask for him.”
“More.”
“He saw Nathan’s absence make me desperate.”
The line was true.
It hurt Nathan if he heard it.
He did.
Our receiver remained connected.
The operation demanded honesty at the exact place it could cause damage.
My chest tightened.
Still here?
No vibration came.
Nathan was inside the contractor room with Marcus. Working. Listening. Unable to answer without risking the extraction.
Helena felt the fear move through me.
“Stay,” she whispered too low for Samuel.
Then louder:
“Did Marcus satisfy what Nathan could not?”
The cruelest possible question.
Arthur’s preferred story.
I caught Helena’s hair.
“No one replaces my husband.”
The answer carried through the microphone.
For Samuel.
For Nathan.
For me.
Helena smiled against my mouth.
“Not enough.”
I moved my fingers inside her.
“Marcus gave me size.”
Samuel leaned closer.
“More.”
“Control.”
“More.”
“Rivalry.”
Her body tightened around my hand.
“And Nathan?”
The receiver remained silent.
I looked at the black window and imagined my husband beneath us, copying files while hearing another woman interrogate me about his place.
“The center.”
The word entered the rain.
Nathan’s signal vibrated once.
Still here.
I touched my earpiece twice.
Always.
Samuel could not see the gesture because Helena covered it with a kiss.
She put her fingers inside me again.
We moved against each other beneath the awning while the hidden camera recorded exactly what we chose to show.
No completed orgasm.
The bathhouse debt remained.
The service lift debt grew.
Anticipation became operational material.
Marcus’s voice entered the receiver.
“Done.”
Nathan followed.
“Leave.”
Helena removed her hand.
I fixed her dress.
She fixed mine.
We separated with the deliberate anger of women who wanted observers to believe the alliance had fractured.
“Tell Marcus the deal is over,” I said loudly.
“Tell Nathan he never controlled it.”
We walked toward opposite exits.
Samuel chose me.
That had been the final test.
He followed the Sterling principal, assuming Helena would return to Marcus and confirm the split.
Instead, Helena entered the stairwell and took a staff passage toward the contractor room.
I returned to the service lift alone.
Samuel stepped inside before the doors closed.
Gray badge.
Neutral face.
The man who had turned crew, drivers, and airport handlers into a private intelligence network.
He pressed the ground floor.
“Difficult evening, Mrs. Sterling?”
His first direct words.
Vanity.
Helena had been right.
I looked at his lapel pin in the mirror.
“Do I know you?”
“No.”
“Then why are you asking?”
“You looked upset.”
“I looked wet. Different condition.”
His neutral face cracked.
Only slightly.
Enough.
The lift descended.
He believed he held the image.
I knew Nathan and Marcus held the source files.
“Arthur pays well?” I asked.
Samuel’s eyes moved to mine in the mirror.
“I do not know anyone named Arthur.”
“Wrong answer.”
The doors opened at the second floor.
Nathan stood outside.
Marcus beside him.
Helena behind both men holding Samuel’s contractor drive.
The neutral face disappeared.
Samuel reached toward his jacket.
Marcus caught his wrist.
Nathan removed the lapel pin.
No dramatic fight.
Two powerful men using controlled force in a service corridor while their wives closed both exits.
Helena held up the drive.
“Your archive has excellent labels.”
Samuel looked at her.
Recognition became fear.
I touched the black notebook inside my clutch.
The hook had been chosen.
The man holding it had finally understood he was the bait.
