Chapter 2 Hostility and Hunger
The snow did not just fall; it screamed.
The wind whipped through the towering pines, throwing sharp needles of ice against my face.
Behind us, the two Council trackers Damon had just slaughtered lay staining the fresh snow a deep, horrific crimson.
I stared at the dark blood, my breath hitching in my throat, before my eyes snapped back to the massive, imposing figure of the rogue Alpha standing before me.
Damon.
His chest heaved, his dark hair dusted with white.
The heavy scent of pine, crushed winter leaves, and raw, masculine dominance rolled off him, hitting me like a physical blow.
Underneath it all was the metallic tang of blood.
He was lethal, a creature of pure survival, and right now, his golden eyes were locked onto me with a terrifying intensity.
“Move,” he growled, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that resonated right through the soles of my boots. “The storm is turning. If we stay out here, the cold will kill us before the next wave of trackers even finds our scent.”
He did not wait for my agreement. He grabbed my wrist, his grip firm but not painful, sending a jolt of pure electric fire straight up my arm.
I gasped, pulling back instinctively. The golden light beneath my skin, the strange, dormant power that had been whispering in my veins ever since I fled the Council, flared in response to his touch.
It was a violent, beautiful reaction, a sudden surge of heat that fought against the freezing mountain air.
“I can walk on my own,” I snapped, wrenching my wrist from his grasp. My fingers curled into fists to hide the trembling. “And I don’t trust you.”
Damon turned slowly, his golden eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the freezing air feel suddenly scalding. “You don’t have to trust me, Aria. But you do have to survive. Follow me, or freeze.”
He turned and plunged into the whiteout.
I bit my lip, casting one last look at the dark woods behind me, and followed him.
I had no other choice. The Council had branded me a fugitive, and the wilderness was a death sentence without a guide.
Even if that guide was a rogue Alpha with a reputation for brutality.
The blizzard descended with terrifying speed.
Within minutes, visibility dropped to zero.
I could barely see two feet in front of me, relying entirely on the broad, dark silhouette of Damon’s back as he carved a path through the knee-deep drifts.
My lungs burned with every breath of icy air.
My limbs grew heavy, the biting cold seeping through my coat and numbing my fingers.
Just as my knees buckled, a heavy arm wrapped around my waist, hoisting me against a solid wall of muscle and heat.
“I told you,” Damon muttered near my ear, his breath warm against my freezing skin. “Let me help you.”
I wanted to argue, to demand he let me down, but the sheer, radiating warmth of his body was too seductive to fight.
I clung to his shoulders, my fingers burying into the thick fabric of his coat.
The contrast between the freezing storm and his furnace-like heat was intoxicating.
He carried me up a steep, rocky incline, his boots gripping the slippery stone with supernatural ease.
Finally, he ducked beneath a low overhang of rock and slipped into the pitch-black shadows of a deep cavern.
The howling wind instantly muffled, reduced to a distant, angry roar.
Damon set me down gently on a flat patch of stone deep within the cave.
I collapsed against the rock wall, shivering violently as the adrenaline began to fade, leaving me cold to the bone.
He stood over me, a dark silhouette against the faint light filtering through the cave entrance.
He stripped off his heavy, snow-dusted coat, revealing the lean, muscular contours of his body beneath a dark, form-fitting shirt.
Even in the dimness, I could feel the sheer weight of his gaze on me.
“You’re freezing,” he said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet register.
“I’m fine,” I lied, my teeth chattering so hard it was painful.
He let out a low, mocking huff. “Your lips are blue, sweetheart. Your body is telling a very different story.”
He knelt in front of me, his large hands reaching out. I flinched back, my back pressing hard against the cold stone. “Don’t.”
Damon paused, his hands hovering inches from my knees. His golden eyes flared in the darkness, reflecting the tiny bits of light like a predator in the night. “I just saved your life, Aria. If I wanted to hurt you, I would have left you to the trackers. Or to the storm.”
“You’re a rogue,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “And you’re Silas’s brother. The brother of the man who tried to control me, who threatened to exile me. How do I know you’re not just another monster trying to lock me in a cage?”
The muscle in his jaw clenched hard. The air in the cave grew thick, heavy with his rising scent, a heady mix of dark musk and wild, untamed power. “Do not compare me to Silas. I turned my back on his pathetic pack hierarchy years ago. I don’t build cages, Aria. And I don’t keep prisoners.”
He leaned in closer, his proximity sending a wave of heat washing over my shivering frame. “But right now, you are freezing to death. And whether you like it or not, my wolf is screaming at me to keep you warm.”
The honesty in his voice struck a chord deep inside me.
He was not Silas. Silas’s power was cold, calculated, and oppressive; Damon’s power was raw, wild, and fiercely protective.
There was no deceit in his golden eyes, only a dangerous, magnetic intensity that drew me in against my better judgment.
“Fine,” I breathed, my defenses crumbling under the sheer weight of the cold.
Damon did not hesitate. He pulled me into his lap, wrapping his strong arms around me and pulling my back against his chest. The moment our bodies fully connected, a violent shudder ran through both of us. It was not from the cold.
It was the bond.
The invisible, unbreakable thread that connected our souls flared to life, burning like a wildfire. A low, rumbling growl vibrated in Damon’s chest, a sound of pure, possessive satisfaction. My own breath hitched as a wave of intense, liquid heat flooded my lower belly, melting the ice in my veins.
“See?” he murmured, his lips brushing against the sensitive skin of my neck as he spoke. “Your body knows exactly what it wants.”
“It’s just biology,” I whispered, though my voice lacked any real conviction. I tilted my head slightly, giving his mouth better access to my neck, even as my mind screamed at me to resist. “A trick of the blood.”
“Is it?” Damon’s hand slid up my waist, his palm burning through my shirt.
His fingers were calloused, rough, and incredibly dominant.
“Because I have never felt this for anyone. Not even close. My wolf wants to claim you, Aria. He wants to mark you, to tear down anyone who dares to look at you. But I am trying very hard to be gentlemanly here.”
I turned in his arms, forcing him to look at me. The golden light beneath my skin began to pulse, casting a faint, ethereal glow in the darkness of the cave. His eyes widened slightly as he saw it, his gaze tracking the shimmering veins on my neck and collarbone.
“What is this?” he whispered, his hand gently rising to cup my jaw. His thumb brushed over my cheekbone, his touch surprisingly tender for a man so massive and lethal. “Silas said you were a low-ranking member. A nobody. But this… this isn’t normal pack magic.”
“I don’t know,” I admitted, my heart hammering against my ribs. “It started when I fled. It feels like… like something is waking up inside me. Something the Council has been trying to keep hidden.”
Damon’s gaze darkened, his thumb tracing the line of my lower lip. “Whatever it is, it’s beautiful. And it makes you dangerous. The Council will hunt you to the ends of the earth for this.”
“Let them try,” I said, a sudden spark of defiance flaring in my chest. “I am tired of running. I am tired of being afraid.”
A slow, wicked smile spread across Damon’s lips, sending a thrill of pure excitement through my blood. “That’s my girl. A fighter.”
The air between us grew impossibly thick, charged with a heavy, suffocating tension.
The hostility that had defined our first meeting was still there, a sharp edge of mutual distrust, but it was rapidly being consumed by a raw, desperate hunger.
His eyes fell to my lips, and the possessive, predatory look returned with full force.
“I want to kiss you, Aria,” he growled, his voice a dark promise. “And I’m not going to pretend I don’t.”
My breath caught. “I shouldn’t let you.”
“Then tell me to stop,” he challenged, his face inches from mine. “Tell me you don’t want this. Tell me your blood isn’t screaming for mine, and I’ll walk to the other side of this cave and let you freeze.”
I stared into his golden eyes, searching for any sign of deceit, any hint of the manipulative games Silas used to play.
I found none. There was only raw, unfiltered desire, and a fierce respect for my choice.
He was giving me the power. He was an Alpha, a rogue who could easily take what he wanted, yet he was waiting for my permission.
That realization shattered the last of my restraint.
“Don’t stop,” I whispered.
Damon groaned, a sound of pure, unadulterated hunger, and slammed his mouth onto mine.
The kiss was a collision of teeth and tongue, a battle for dominance that left me completely breathless.
He tasted like dark winter and wild, forbidden promises.
I gasped into his mouth, and he took advantage, his tongue sweeping inside to claim me with a fierce, possessive rhythm.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, needing to erase every inch of space between us.
The golden light beneath my skin flared brighter, pulsing in perfect harmony with the rapid beating of my heart.
Damon’s hands gripped my hips, lifting me effortlessly until I was straddling his lap. His fingers dug into my skin, anchoring me to him as he tore his mouth from mine to trail a path of burning kisses down my jaw, throat, and collarbone.
“You are driving me insane,” he growled against my skin, his breath hot and ragged. “From the moment I saw you in the woods, all I could think about was tasting you. Touching you.”
He gripped the hem of my shirt and pulled it over my head, casting it aside. The cool air of the cave hit my bare skin, but it was instantly vaporized by the heat of his gaze. He stared at me, his eyes dark with a primal, possessive lust that made my entire body tremble.
“Beautiful,” he muttered, his hands sliding up my ribcage to cup my breasts.
I arched into his touch, a soft whimper escaping my lips as his thumbs brushed over my aching nipples.
The sensation was so intense it bordered on pain, a sweet, agonizing ache that demanded more.
Damon’s shirt followed mine, revealing a chest carved of solid granite, covered in a light dusting of dark hair and crisscrossed with battle scars.
He was a warrior, a survivor of a brutal world, and the sight of him made my blood sing.
I pressed my palms against his chest, feeling the frantic, heavy thud of his heart.
“Damon,” I gasped, my fingers clawing at his shoulders as he leaned me back against his discarded coat.
He followed me down, his massive body hovering over mine, pinning me to the floor of the cave.
He unbuttoned my pants, his fingers brushing against the sensitive skin of my lower stomach, sending shivers of pure electricity shooting down my thighs.
He stripped them off, along with my undergarments, leaving me completely bare beneath him.
He looked down at me, his breathing heavy and uneven. The golden light in my veins was pulsing visibly now, casting a warm, amber glow over both of our bodies.
“Look at you,” he whispered, his voice thick with awe. “You’re glowing for me.”
“I’m glowing because of you,” I corrected, my voice trembling with raw emotion. “Because of this… this bond.”
“Then let’s give it what it wants,” he growled.
He quickly rid himself of his remaining clothes.
When he returned to me, the sheer, impressive sight of his arousal made my breath hitch.
He was thick, heavy, and fully ready to claim me.
He parted my thighs, settling his hips between mine.
His large hands slid under my hips, tilting my pelvis up to meet him.
I wrapped my legs around his waist, my body aching, weeping with a desperate need to be filled.
