Chapter 6 The Weight of Legacy #2
“Then live with me,” he murmured, his lips brushing mine in a feather light, agonizingly sweet tease. “Fight with me. Choose me, Aria. Not because of some fated bond, but because you want me as much as I want you.”
“I do,” I breathed, the truth of it blooming in my chest like a wildfire. “I choose you, Damon.”
The declaration broke whatever restraint he had left. Damon growled, a deep, possessive sound that rumbled from his chest, and captured my mouth in a fiercely passionate kiss.
The heat between us exploded, a volatile mixture of grief, relief, and raw, desperate desire.
He pulled me down onto the bed of furs, his massive body pinning mine with a heavy, intoxicating weight.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, desperate to lose myself in the sensation of him, to forget the weight of the world outside this room.
Damon’s hands were everywhere, stripping away my ash stained clothes with a frantic, desperate hunger.
I helped him, tugging at his shirt, needing to feel his skin against mine.
When we were finally bare, the contrast between us was striking.
He was a mountain of scarred, golden muscle, a warrior shaped by a lifetime of brutal survival.
I was smaller, softer, but beneath my skin, the golden light of my Lycan magic flared in response to his touch, illuminating the dark room with a warm, pulsing glow.
“You are so beautiful,” he growled, his gaze sweeping over my body with an intensity that made me shiver.
He leaned down, his lips tracing a path of fire down my throat, his sharp teeth grazing the sensitive skin of my collarbone, making me arch against him with a soft gasp.
“Mine. Every beautiful, powerful inch of you.”
“Show me,” I pleaded, my fingers tangling in his dark hair, pulling him back up to meet my gaze. “Make me forget everything else.”
Damon did not hesitate. He positioned himself between my thighs, his hard, thick length brushing against my aching center. He paused for a fraction of a second, his amber eyes searching mine, ensuring my absolute consent. I answered by wrapping my legs around his waist, pulling him down into me.
He drove deep, a low groan escaping his lips as he filled me completely.
The sensation was overwhelming, a perfect, exquisite friction that made my vision blur with pleasure.
I cried out, my hands gripping his broad shoulders as he began to move, his thrusts powerful, rhythmic, and utterly consuming.
Every touch was electric. Our magic mingled in the air, the dark, stormy aura of his Alpha wolf wrapping around the golden, radiant energy of my Lycan blood.
We were two halves of a whole, perfectly matched in strength and passion.
Damon held my hands, pinning them to the furs beside my head, his fingers locking with mine as he drove faster, deeper, taking me to the absolute edge of sanity.
“Damon,” I gasped, my chest heaving as the tension inside me coiled tighter and tighter, a delicious ache that demanded release.
“I have you, sweetheart,” he growled, his pace turning frantic, his muscles straining as he poured everything he had into the movement. “Let go. Give it to me.”
With a final, powerful thrust, the world exploded into a brilliant kaleidoscope of gold and amber light.
I shattered, my body trembling as wave after wave of intense, mind numbing pleasure crashed over me.
Damon let out a raw, guttural roar, driving deep one last time as he filled me, his own release taking him over, his body shuddering against mine in perfect, synchronized ecstasy.
We lay there for a long time, our breathing slowly returning to normal as the steam from the thermal pool drifted over us.
Damon rolled onto his side, keeping me pulled tightly against his chest, his fingers gently stroking my hair.
The overwhelming weight of my legacy was still there, but it no longer felt like a prison sentence.
It felt like a challenge we would face together.
Eventually, the reality of our situation returned. We bathed in the warm, healing waters of the thermal pool, washing away the ash and the sweat of our passion. As we dressed in clean, dark leathers provided by Maeve, a new sense of purpose settled over me. I was ready.
We walked hand in hand back into the main cavern.
The atmosphere had shifted. The word of my presence had spread, and the cavern was now packed with dozens of wolves.
There were the battle hardened rogues of Damon’s pack, but there were also representatives from other independent packs who had hidden in the mountains for years, their faces grim but filled with a sudden, dangerous hope.
Damon stepped up onto a raised stone platform, but instead of standing in front of me, he took my hand and pulled me up beside him. He did not present me as a prize or a trophy. He stood beside me as an equal partner.
“Listen to me!” Damon’s voice boomed through the cavern, instantly silencing the murmurs of the crowd.
“For years, the Council has hunted us. They have called us rogues, outcasts, and beasts. They have forced us to live in the shadows, stealing our children and draining our magic to fuel their own greed. They thought they had erased the bloodline of the first Lycans, the only power capable of challenging their corrupt rule.”
He turned to look at me, and the crowd followed his gaze. I felt the golden light rise to the surface of my skin, glowing softly, a visual testament to the truth of his words.
“But they failed,” Damon declared, his voice ringing with a powerful, revolutionary zeal.
“The last Lycan stands before you. And we are going to take back our freedom. We are going to march on the Grand Hall of Iron and Amber. We are going to free her mother, and we are going to tear the High Council down!”
A deafening roar of approval shook the cavern. Wolves threw back their heads, howling in unison, a chorus of rebellion that had been suppressed for centuries. The energy in the room was electric, a gathering storm of revolution.
But the triumph was short lived.
Suddenly, the warm, steaming air of the cavern turned bone chillingly cold.
The bioluminescent moss on the ceiling flickered violently, its blue light dying out and plunging the room into near darkness.
The thermal pool in the center of the cavern began to bubble violently, the water turning a dark, murky black.
The crowd’s cheers died instantly, replaced by panicked whispers. Damon stepped in front of me, his claws extending, his wolf growling low in his chest.
In the center of the black pool, a thick, dark mist began to rise, coalescing into a terrifyingly familiar shape. It was a projection of dark, ancient magic.
Within the swirling mist, a vision appeared. I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth. It was my mother, Selene. She was suspended in midair by heavy silver chains, her skin pale, her eyes closed in agony as glowing crimson energy was siphoned from her chest into a massive, pulsing crystal above her.
Then, the vision shifted. The image of my mother faded, replaced by two glowing, blood red eyes staring directly at me through the mist. The very same eyes that had hunted us in the Deadlands.
A voice echoed through the cavern, cold, ancient, and dripping with absolute malice.
“The blood of the Lycan is mine,” the voice hissed, vibrating through the stone floor. “I am coming for you, Aria. And your mother will be the first to bleed.”
With a sudden, violent crack, the projection shattered into a thousand shards of dark magic, leaving the cavern in a stunned, terrified silence.
The war had not just begun. It had just found us.
