I stood near my car, watching Dhwani talk to Ms. Arora.
Yeah, it was kind of shocking for me.
She hadn't properly spoken to her in the last few days, but now suddenly they were standing together. On top of that, Dhwani looked worried. Really worried. She was holding Ms. Arora's hand, and from the way she was speaking, it looked like she was requesting something.
"Can you guess what's going on there?" I took off my shades and asked Ishaan.
He chuckled.
"What am I? A magician who can understand what women are talking about from thirty feet away?"
"But you understand everything."
"Yeah, but not this woman." He shook his head. "Dhwani is different. She says something, thinks something else, and then does the exact opposite. An hour ago she called me saying she needed help. Then she called again and said everything was sorted. So honestly, I have no idea what's happening."
I exhaled. He was right.
It was hard to understand Dhwani.
Before marriage, she was easier to read. Now every day I discovered a new layer of her personality.
The chain of my thoughts broke when a black car stopped behind mine. I turned around. My brows lifted immediately.
Samarth.
The driver's door opened and he stepped out.
Honestly, seeing him here made me happy.
He walked towards us with his usual expressionless face.
The moment he reached us, we shook hands before he pulled me into a brief hug.
"What are you doing here?" I asked. "Don't tell me you came to support me."
"Of course not." He looked offended by the suggestion. "I came to witness your downfall personally."
I stared at him.
Ishaan snorted.
Samarth continued with a straight face.
"Do you know how difficult it is to find good entertainment these days? I thought watching you lose in court would be worth my time."
"Wow. Such friendship."
"You should be grateful I came."
"Yesh" I scoffed. “ Very grateful.”
He hugged Ishaan once before coming to stand beside us.
"Where is Dhwani?"
I turned my head towards my wife and, of course, her mother."There."
Samarth followed my gaze. His eyes landed on the two women standing together.
"Is she her mother?"
"Yeah." I folded my arms. "Her mother. The same woman she pushed and injured a few days ago but now she's talking to her as if her life depends on her."
Ishaan snorted."Women."
"Whatever."
Samarth started walking towards them.
The moment Dhwani noticed him, her entire face lit up.
A bright smile spread across her lips before she practically ran towards him and wrapped her arms around him.
I frowned.
God. I see you definitely have a favorite child. I mean just look at that hug. That was the kind of hug people gave after meeting someone they hadn't seen for years.
I watched her cling to him while Samarth patted her head like she was still a child.
Seriously? She never hugged me like that.
Not once.
I married her. I slept beside her every night. I listened to her cry for hours. And yet somehow this bastard of her brother got the better hugs.
I really needed to have a discussion with my wife about her clear favoritism towards her brother.
Meanwhile, Samarth's sharp eyes shifted towards Ms. Arora and Ms. Arora was already looking at him.
The two silently observed each other for a few seconds. Though I wasn't particularly good at reading people, one thing was obvious. Ms. Arora looked... relieved.
Happy even.
Maybe because she was finally seeing the man who had saved her daughter all those years ago. Because the way Dhwani was glued to Samarth made it painfully obvious how much she adored him.
"There is something very wrong," Ishaan muttered beside me. "Very, very wrong."
I glanced at him.
"Fair enough. I'm thinking the same thing."
A few days ago, Dhwani wanted nothing to do with her mother. Now they were standing together talking peacefully and Samarth looked way too comfortable around both of them.
Something was definitely happening behind my back.
"They are hiding something," I said.
"Definitely."
Not willing to stand there and watch any longer, I started walking towards them.
As I got closer, Samarth's voice reached my ears.
"You don't have to worry about that asshole."
I frowned. Which asshole?
Before I could hear anything else, Ms. Arora noticed me approaching. Almost immediately, she stepped back.
"Alright. I need to check a few details related to the case. See you soon." And just like that, she walked away.
Suspicious. Very suspicious.
"Dhwani."
She turned towards me. The smile on her face appeared a second too late.
"Yugant, you're here?"
I raised a brow. "Yeah. Is there any problem?" My eyes moved between her and Samarth.
"No." She answered too quickly. "No problem. Everything is fine."
Liar.
The slight break in her voice gave her away instantly.
Dhwani could lie with words. Her eyes never cooperated. I stared at her for a few seconds then at Samarth. And then back at her.
"Interesting."
"What?"
I folded my arms."Nothing."
Dhwani looked away.
Samarth suddenly found the parking lot extremely fascinating. And that alone confirmed my suspicion.
"I forgot my phone in the car... You should go inside, I'm coming," Dhwani said, avoiding my gaze as she walked towards the car.
Samarth sighed and headed towards the courtroom stairs.
I shook my head and followed Dhwani instead. She opened the back door and slid inside. Before getting in, I told Ishaan to go after Samarth and find out what was going on. As he walked away, I slid into the back seat beside my wife.
"Yugant... what are you doing here?"
She startled, clutching her phone tightly in her hand.
I raised a brow.
"What were you doing here?"
"Told you. I came to take my phone."
"Yeah..." I leaned towards her. "I'm not asking about the phone. I'm asking what you were doing with Ms. Arora."
She swallowed and instinctively shifted a little away from me.
"I was just discussing the case."
"Oh? And?"
I slid closer and rested my hands on either side of her, trapping her between me and the door.
"And?" She lifted her brows innocently.
"Don't you think you should explain that hug you gave Samarth?"
"Huh?" She blinked before understanding. "Oh, that hug. But what exactly do I need to explain about it?"
"You never hug me like that." My eyes dropped to her lips before returning to her face.
She gulped. Her tongue darted out to wet her lips.
"Yugant..." Her hand came to rest on my shoulder. "Okay, come here. Let me hug you like that."
Before I could reply, her arms wrapped around my neck and she pulled me closer.
I buried my face in the crook of her neck and inhaled deeply.
She smelled different today. Something warm and sweet. Like pistachios and vanilla.
For a few moments, I simply stayed there, enjoying the comfort of being close to her.
"You are such a baby," she whispered, amusement clear in her voice. "Getting jealous over a simple hug?"
I could hear the smile she was trying to hide.
Humming softly, I lifted my head and looked at her.
The nuptial chain I had gifted her rested against her neck, catching the sunlight filtering through the car window.
"Maybe," I admitted.
She rolled her eyes. "Unbelievable."
"I married you. I have rights.”
"Of course you do have every right over me, Mr. Husband."
She smiled softly. Her eyes sparkled, but the smile still didn't quite reach them. There was something she was hiding behind it, something that had been bothering her since morning.
My gaze dropped to her lips for a moment before returning to her eyes.
"May I?" I asked quietly.
A soft blush spread across her cheeks.
Instead of answering, her fingers slipped into my hair and gently pulled me closer.
That was enough to answer.
I closed the distance between us and brushed my lips against hers. Slow. Soft. Unhurried.
Dhwani sighed against my lips, her eyes fluttering shut as she melted into me.
For a few seconds, neither of us rushed. The kiss remained gentle, carrying all the emotions neither of us had managed to put into words since morning.
Her hand moved to my cheek while mine settled at her waist, pulling her a little closer.
The world outside the car disappeared.
I felt her smile against my lips and couldn't help smiling back.
When the kiss finally broke, I rested my forehead against hers.
Her breath was slightly uneven, but the worry on her face had eased.
"There," she whispered softly. "Happy now?"
"A little."
"A little?" Her brows lifted.
I nodded seriously.
"Maybe I'll need another one after the hearing."
A soft laugh escaped her. "Shameless."
"Your shameless husband."
This time, her smile reached her eyes. And somehow, seeing that felt better than winning any argument.
“You trust me right? You will always stay with me?”
I cupped her face gently, my thumbs brushing her cheeks.
"Ofcourse." My eyes stayed locked with hers. "I trust you. And I’ll always stay beside you.”
?????
The courtroom was larger than I remembered.
Rows of wooden benches were occupied by people who had come only to watch the drama unfold. Some were reporters, some were businessmen curious about the case, The air smelled of old files, polished wood and tension.
My gaze moved around the courtroom once before settling on our side.
Daadu had arrived a few minutes ago with Vedika. They were both sitting beside Ishaan.
I leaned towards Dhwani. "Where is Dhrithika? And Dadi?"
