Episode 37| The Key of Hope

Night settled over the Temple of Light like a white veil.

The day's bustle had long faded. The corridors, once filled with the chatter of priests and worshippers, now echoed only with the occasional footsteps of the night watch.

Ryan walked alone through the cloisters, the hood of her white robes resting against her back. Her duties for the day had finally ended, but her mind refused to rest.

She had spent months building trust.

Months carefully weaving relationships.

Months pretending to be nothing more than a humble priest.

And now...

The first cracks were finally appearing.

She stopped before a stone balcony overlooking the Temple grounds.

The city beyond glittered beneath the moonlight.

Thousands of lives.

Thousands of people.

Completely unaware that the man leading the Temple had sold his soul to a demon.

Riley rested both hands against the cold stone railing.

"So this is what political warfare feels like..."

She laughed quietly to herself.

"In my last life, I scammed corporations."

"In this life..."

"...I'm scamming a religion."

The absurdity almost made her smile.

Almost.

Then her expression became serious.

"I just hope I'm not too late."

---

Footsteps interrupted her thoughts.

"Brother Ryan?"

She turned.

It was Father Alistair Beaumont.

The older priest carried a lantern in one hand and wore the same calm expression he always did.

"I thought I might find you here."

Ryan bowed respectfully.

"Father Alistair."

The older man stepped beside her, looking out over the sleeping capital.

"It is beautiful at night."

"It is."

For a while, neither spoke.

Father Alistair was the first to break the silence.

"You've changed this Temple."

Ryan blinked.

"I've only been here a few months."

"Sometimes..."

Alistair smiled faintly.

"...that is all it takes."

Ryan looked at him curiously.

The older priest continued.

"Do you know what I heard today?"

Ryan shook her head.

"I heard novice priests arguing."

Ryan frowned.

"Arguing?"

"They were debating whether the Temple exists to protect people..."

"...or whether people exist to support the Temple."

Ryan remained silent.

"They wouldn't have asked such questions six months ago."

Father Alistair looked directly at her.

"They ask them now because of you."

Ryan smiled awkwardly.

"I only answered their questions."

"No."

The older priest corrected gently.

"You reminded them that questions are allowed."

The words lingered between them.

Then Alistair reached inside his robes and removed a small bronze key.

He placed it into Ryan's hand.

Ryan looked down in surprise.

"What is this?"

"The key to the restricted archives."

Her eyes widened.

"Father..."

"The High Priest rarely visits them."

"They contain records that haven't been opened in decades."

Ryan looked back up.

"You trust me with this?"

"I do."

"Why?"

Father Alistair smiled.

"Because if anyone is going to uncover the truth..."

"...I'd rather it be someone whose first instinct is to help others."

Ryan felt the unexpected weight of the small key resting in her palm.

This...

This wasn't just access to old books.

It was trust.

Real trust.

She closed her fingers around it.

"I won't betray your faith in me."

"I know."

---

Elsewhere...

In the highest chamber of the Temple...

The High Priest stood before a wall-sized stained-glass window depicting the Goddess of Light blessing humanity.

Moonlight painted the image in silver.

How ironic.

He slowly raised his hand.

Dark mist curled around his fingers before disappearing again beneath the disguise of holy magic.

"Ryan Scott..."

He whispered.

"I've underestimated you."

Not because Ryan possessed overwhelming strength.

Not because Ryan had openly challenged him.

But because Ryan had done something far more dangerous.

He had given people hope.

Hope...

Was the enemy of control.

When people depended entirely upon the Temple...

They obeyed.

When people began believing they could change the Temple...

Authority weakened.

The High Priest clenched his fist.

"I cannot allow that."

Behind him...

The shadow on the floor stretched unnaturally.

Asmedious emerged only enough for his crimson eyes to become visible.

"You finally understand."

The High Priest nodded.

"I do."

"I will not move against Ryan."

"Not yet."

"I'll let him continue."

The demon chuckled.

"Why?"

A slow smile spread across the High Priest's face.

"Because people reveal far more..."

"...when they believe they've already won."

---

At that same moment...

Ryan unlocked the door to her modest room.

She closed it quietly before removing the silver rings from her fingers.

Golden light shimmered across her body.

Her short hair lengthened, cascading like liquid sunlight down her back.

The handsome young priest disappeared.

Riley Scott stood alone once again.

She let out a long sigh and collapsed onto the edge of her bed.

"What a day..."

She glanced at the bronze key Father Alistair had entrusted to her.

"The restricted archives..."

"If Athena is right..."

"...there must be records hidden there."

Records about the previous timeline.

About Saintesses.

About Asmedious.

About the Goddess herself.

She smiled.

"Looks like my next scam..."

"...is stealing knowledge."

She laughed quietly.

Some habits never changed.

She might have become the chosen Saintess.

She might have been blessed by a Goddess.

She might even become the future High Priest.

But at her core...

She was still Mikayla.

The scammer from Cleveland who refused to let corrupt people sleep peacefully.

Her emerald eyes slowly drifted toward the moon outside the window.

"One step at a time."

"The Temple..."

"The High Priest..."

"And then..."

She thought of Raymond.

A small smile appeared.

"I'll keep my promise."

Far away, in the Imperial Palace, Raymond stood on his own balcony, looking toward the Temple silhouetted against the moon.

As though sensing her thoughts, he smiled to himself.

"The board is finally set."

Neither of them knew it yet...

But the next move would change everything.
