CHAPTER 25
A Hand on the Ring
When they returned to the ballroom, Elise kept her hand on Daniel's arm.
It looked proper. It felt anything but. Her fingers pressed lightly against him with every step, and he could feel the secret under her skin. She had been praised in a locked corridor by another man and had walked back beside her husband without either of them pretending it had not mattered.
The event had shifted from speeches to dancing. A jazz trio played near the far wall, the singer's voice smooth enough to make even polite couples remember their bodies. Guests moved lazily across the floor, laughing, swaying, touching with the safety of public celebration.
'Dance with me,' Elise said.
Daniel blinked. 'Now?'
'Now.'
He glanced toward the lobby. Marcus had resumed his post, speaking into his radio, eyes moving across the room. Professional. Distant. Present.
'All right,' Daniel said.
On the dance floor, Elise came into his arms with a familiarity that startled him.
They had danced at weddings, at holiday parties, in kitchens after too much wine, but this felt different.
She was alert to him and to the room. To his hand at her waist. To Marcus somewhere beyond the doors.
To the fact that Daniel knew where her attention traveled and was holding her anyway.
'You are shaking,' she whispered.
'So are you.'
Her smile brushed his cheek. 'I know.'
They turned slowly beneath the lights. Daniel let himself look at her the way he usually forgot to.
Not as the person who reminded him to buy coffee filters or asked whether he had called the accountant, but as the woman in a burgundy dress whose eyes had filled when another man called her courageous.
He had been so afraid of exposure that he had mistaken it for humiliation. But here, with her body warm in his arms and Marcus visible in the distance, exposure felt like standing near a window after years underground.
Elise's left hand shifted on his shoulder. Her thumb touched her wedding ring.
Daniel went still for half a beat.
'Guardrail?' he asked.
She shook her head. 'No. I wanted to feel it.'
The answer moved through him with unexpected force. The ring was not a brake. It was a tether. It meant they could approach the edge because there was something real between them that did not vanish when another man looked at her.
Across the room, Marcus's gaze found them.
Daniel saw it happen. Elise did too. Her posture changed in his arms, subtle but unmistakable, as if the music had moved lower in her body. Daniel should have pulled her closer to shield her. Instead, he shifted his hand to the small of her back and turned her so Marcus could see her face.
Elise inhaled sharply. 'Daniel.'
'Dance,' he said.
She did.
It was nothing scandalous. A married couple moving together at a private event. A husband guiding his wife through a slow turn. A security guard watching the room because that was his job. Yet Daniel knew the truth beneath the surface, and the truth made every ordinary detail blaze.
When the song ended, Elise did not step away immediately. She rested her forehead briefly against his jaw.
'Thank you,' she said.
'For dancing?'
'For not making me smaller because you were scared.'
The words hit the place in him that had been sore for years. Daniel closed his eyes for one second, then opened them because he wanted to stay awake for this.
'I have done that before,' he said.
'I know.'
No accusation. No cruelty. Just truth.
He looked toward Marcus. The guard was turning away from the ballroom entrance, but Daniel had the strangest sense the man had given them privacy by deciding not to watch too long.
'Do you want another song?' Daniel asked.
Elise studied him. 'With you?'
The question held more than it said. Daniel's pulse leapt. He was not ready to answer all of it, but he was ready to answer this piece.
'With me first,' he said.
Her smile was slow and full of heat. 'First.'
They danced again. This time, when she touched her ring, Daniel did not flinch. He covered her hand with his and held it there.
