CHAPTER 27

The Service Elevator

The lights flickered at nine forty-six.

It was brief enough that half the ballroom laughed and the other half pretended not to notice. The quartet missed a note, recovered, and played on. Outside, thunder rolled over the city with theatrical timing.

Marcus touched his earpiece. His eyes shifted from private attention to operational awareness so quickly that Daniel felt the air change.

'Generator will catch if it drops,' Marcus said.

'Does this happen often?' Elise asked.

'In weather like this, often enough.'

Another flicker. This time the corridor lights dimmed and stayed low.

A voice crackled faintly from Marcus's radio. He listened, then looked at Daniel and Elise. 'I need to move you out of this corridor. The balcony doors are old, and I do not like guests near glass during a power fluctuation.'

The instruction was reasonable. The effect was not. Daniel felt the old thrill of being guided by this man through hidden parts of Aster Hall, only now they had returned with intention and a vocabulary for danger.

'Where?' Daniel asked.

'Service elevator to the lower lobby. It is secure and away from exterior glass.'

Elise's eyes flashed toward Daniel. The phrase service elevator seemed to touch some private wire in both of them.

'Guardrail?' Daniel asked softly.

She shook her head. 'No.'

Marcus led them through a staff door into a narrow passage lit by emergency strips along the floor.

The world changed at once. The ballroom music became a muffled pulse behind the walls.

The carpet gave way to sealed concrete. Silver carts lined one side, loaded with folded linens and crates of empty bottles.

Elise walked close to Daniel, but Marcus's presence filled the passage ahead. Every turn seemed known to him. Every locked door opened under his hand or with a code entered from memory. Daniel hated how much that competence affected him. He hated more that Elise clearly felt it too.

At the service elevator, Marcus pressed the call button and stood back. 'Small space,' he said. 'We can wait for the stairs if that is better.'

Daniel appreciated the offered exit. Elise looked at him.

'Elevator is fine,' he said.

The doors opened with a dull metal sigh.

Inside, the service elevator was padded in dark panels, lit by a single overhead fixture. It smelled faintly of raincoats, waxed floors, and the citrus cleaner used by night staff. Marcus entered first, holding the door. Elise followed. Daniel stepped in last.

The doors closed.

The space made honesty physical. Marcus stood by the controls.

Elise stood between them again, though there was barely room to call it between.

Daniel could see the pulse at the base of her throat.

He could see the careful way Marcus kept his hands visible, one near the control panel, one relaxed at his side.

The elevator descended slowly.

'Breathe,' Marcus said.

Daniel realized the instruction was for him.

He obeyed before he could resent it.

Elise smiled faintly. 'He does that when he is overwhelmed.'

'Holds his breath?' Marcus asked.

'Tries to disappear politely.'

Daniel stared at her, wounded for half a second until he saw the tenderness in her face. She was not mocking him. She was naming him so he could remain present.

Marcus nodded. 'Then do not disappear.'

Daniel's laugh came out rough. 'You give a lot of orders for a man who keeps saying he is just security.'

'Security is mostly knowing what needs saying before a room admits it.'

The elevator shuddered once as it slowed. Elise's shoulder brushed Marcus's sleeve. It was accidental. Everyone knew it. No one pretended not to feel it.

Marcus looked down at her. 'You steady?'

'No,' she whispered.

Daniel's body tightened.

Marcus did not touch her. 'Do you want your husband's hand?'

Elise reached back immediately. Daniel took her fingers, and something in him broke open with gratitude. Marcus could have made himself the answer. He did not. He directed her back to the bond that made this dangerous and safe at once.

The elevator doors opened onto the lower lobby.

Elise did not release Daniel's hand.

Marcus stepped out first, scanning the quiet hall. 'Clear.'

Daniel followed with Elise, his pulse still high. He had thought the small space would make him feel trapped. Instead, it had revealed the strange architecture of the night: Marcus ahead of them, desire around them, and Elise's hand still finding his in the dark.
