CHAPTER 35
The Door Left Unlatched
A soft knock interrupted them.
Daniel startled so hard Elise pulled her hand back.
Marcus moved instantly, placing himself at an angle between the couple and the door without making a performance of it.
The shift reminded Daniel that the room was still inside a venue, still inside a storm, still attached to a world that did not care how carefully three adults were trying to name desire.
Marcus opened the door only partway.
A staff member stood in the hall holding a radio. 'Hale, the north valet line is backed up. They need you for a minute.'
Marcus looked over his shoulder at Daniel and Elise. The question was silent but clear.
Daniel stood. He expected relief to flood him at the interruption. Instead, he felt the ache of being pulled from a dream before its meaning had fully arrived.
'Go,' Daniel said. 'We are fine.'
Marcus's eyes moved to Elise.
She nodded. 'We are.'
'Door stays unlatched,' Marcus said. 'I will be outside this hallway, not far. If you need me, open it.'
Then he was gone, leaving the door slightly open and the room suddenly enormous.
Elise sank onto the sofa. Daniel remained standing. Without Marcus there, the courage that had held him upright began to shake loose. He looked at his wife, at her flushed face and bright eyes, and felt the delayed force of everything he had allowed.
'Come here,' Elise said.
He did, but slowly.
She reached for his hands and pulled him down beside her. 'You are spiraling.'
'I am reviewing evidence.'
'That sounds like spiraling in a suit.'
He laughed despite himself, and the sound cracked something open. Elise leaned into him, pressing her forehead against his shoulder. The familiar weight of her steadied him more than any rule.
'Was it too much?' she asked.
Daniel closed his eyes. He pictured Marcus touching her wedding ring. The memory was not painless. It was not simple. It was also not something he wanted to erase.
'It was a lot,' he said. 'Not too much.'
'For me too.'
He turned toward her. 'Tell me.'
She looked down at their joined hands. 'I felt wanted, but I also felt watched over. By him, yes. But mostly by you. That is what made it so intense. It was not that another man held my hand. It was that my husband let me feel beautiful without leaving me alone in it.'
Daniel breathed her words in like medicine that burned on the way down.
'I was jealous,' he said.
'I saw.'
'I still am.'
'I know.' She touched his cheek. 'But you did not punish me for being the reason.'
He turned his face into her palm. The intimacy of her touch, after watching Marcus touch only her hand, was almost too much.
Here was the difference. Marcus could create pressure, light the edge, reveal the hidden shape.
But Elise's palm on Daniel's face carried years inside it: mornings, arguments, grocery lists, sickness, laughter, taxes, forgiveness.
He kissed her palm.
She shivered.
'Elise,' he said, voice low.
'Yes?'
'I want to kiss you while we are still in this room.'
Her eyes darkened. 'Then kiss me.'
He did.
It was not a polite kiss. It was not the public kiss from the ballroom or the habitual kiss before sleep.
It was the kind of kiss that admitted the night had entered them.
Daniel held her face, and Elise came toward him with a soft urgency that made the sofa creak beneath them.
Rain shivered against the windows. The door remained unlatched.
Somewhere beyond it, Marcus was doing his job, and somehow that knowledge made Daniel kiss his wife with more claim, not less.
When they broke apart, Elise's mouth was warm and her breathing uneven.
'There you are,' she whispered.
The words struck him in the center of the chest.
'Was I gone?'
'Not gone. Hidden.'
He leaned his forehead against hers. 'I do not want to hide anymore.'
A sound in the hall made them both turn. Footsteps approached, paused, then continued past. Not Marcus. Daniel felt Elise's hand tighten on his jacket.
The door remained open a finger's width.
Their choice waited on the other side of it.
