CHAPTER 58

Terms for More

They met again on Friday in a private dining room that was private only because Daniel paid too much for it.

The room sat behind the main floor of a quiet restaurant, separated by frosted glass and a curtain that could be left open. Daniel left it open. That was important. Privacy, not secrecy. Intimacy, not isolation. The distinction had become the narrow bridge he could cross without falling.

Elise wore black again, not the event dress and not the rooftop blue.

This one was simpler, with long sleeves and a neckline that made Daniel think of restraint as something elegant rather than denied.

Marcus arrived in a gray jacket, shook Daniel's hand, greeted Elise without touching her, and waited until everyone sat before he spoke.

'Your message said terms for more.'

Daniel appreciated that he did not pretend they were there for appetizers.

Elise folded her napkin in her lap, then unfolded it. 'Yes.'

'Who starts?' Marcus asked.

Daniel looked at his wife. 'You.'

Her eyes widened. 'Me?'

'The old rule changes only if you get to speak first.'

For a second, she looked as if she might cry again. Then she straightened, composed but not locked away.

'I want touch to be possible,' she said. 'Not assumed. Not owed. Possible.'

Marcus nodded once. 'Where?'

Her blush rose, but she did not retreat. 'Hand. Arm. Back. Hair, if Daniel agrees.'

Marcus turned to Daniel.

Daniel's pulse struck hard against his throat. Hair felt intimate. Maybe because it was not obviously sexual. Maybe because he loved the way Elise softened when someone touched her there with care.

'Hair can be possible,' Daniel said. 'Not tonight unless we all agree in the moment.'

'Understood,' Marcus said.

Elise continued. 'No kissing tonight.'

Daniel looked at her sharply, surprised by both relief and disappointment.

She noticed. 'I want it named before it arrives. And I am not ready to carry that home yet.'

'Good,' Daniel said, his voice low. 'Thank you.'

Marcus rested his forearms on the table. 'My limits: I do not touch you to provoke Daniel. I touch you only if Daniel is included in the meaning of it. If either of you starts performing pain instead of speaking it, I stop.'

Daniel exhaled slowly. 'Performing pain.'

'It is common.'

'You say that like you have seen it.'

Marcus's expression closed slightly. Not cold. Careful. 'I have seen people use desire as proof they were brave, then punish each other for believing them.'

The words cooled the room in a necessary way.

Elise reached for Daniel's hand on the table. 'We do not want that.'

'Then you keep choosing the truth over the scene,' Marcus said.

A server entered with wine none of them remembered ordering. The interruption gave Daniel time to breathe. When the server left, Marcus did not pick up the thread until Daniel nodded.

'Your limit?' Marcus asked him.

Daniel looked at Elise's hand in his. Her wedding band caught the small lamp between them.

'I need to remain visible,' he said. 'Not just present. Visible. If I become furniture in the room, I will turn into a coward and call it sacrifice.'

Elise's fingers tightened.

Marcus held his gaze. 'Then you do not sit silent to prove endurance. You speak. I will check in with you before I touch her and after.'

'And during,' Daniel said.

'And during.'

The agreement settled over the table with more force than any flirtation had managed.

Elise's voice came softly. 'Then what happens tonight?'

Marcus looked to Daniel first.

The choice came back to him, not as a burden this time, but as a key.

Daniel lifted Elise's hand and placed it palm-up on the table between them.

'Tonight,' he said, his heart racing, 'we start with her hand.'
