CHAPTER 62

The Mirror at Home

The house received them with ordinary silence.

A hallway lamp glowed where they had left it.

The shoes Elise had kicked off the night before sat near the console table.

A stack of mail waited with the dull confidence of bills and coupons.

There was nothing cinematic about the place, and that nearly undid Daniel more than the private dining room had.

This was where their real life lived. This was where the charged sentences and careful permissions had to become something that could survive morning coffee.

Elise set her purse on the entry table and turned toward him. 'Bedroom or kitchen?'

Daniel understood the question beneath the question. Did they debrief like cautious people, or did they follow the heat while it still had a pulse?

'Bedroom,' he said.

Her eyes darkened, but she nodded instead of smiling. They had learned that desire needed dignity or it became reckless.

In the bedroom, the city was reduced to a faint glow beyond the curtains. Daniel switched on only the small lamp by the dresser. Its amber light found Elise's shoulders, the line of her dress, the delicate earrings she had worn because he loved them.

She stood in front of the mirror and met his eyes through the reflection.

'You said you wanted to take my hair down,' she whispered.

'I said it badly.'

'No. You said it like you meant something else too.'

He stepped behind her, leaving a careful distance at first, the way Marcus had done. The imitation struck him hard. His hands curled at his sides.

Elise saw it in the mirror. 'Daniel?'

'I do not want to copy him.'

'Then don't.'

'I also do not want to pretend tonight did not put something in me.'

Her face softened. 'Then don't do that either.'

He moved closer until his chest nearly brushed her back. 'May I touch your hair?'

Elise's eyes filled with warmth. 'Yes.'

The word was different in their bedroom.

Less dangerous, perhaps. More dangerous, perhaps.

Daniel lifted his hands and slid his fingers through her hair from the crown down to the ends, not lightly this time, not as a guest. As her husband.

As the man who knew how her breath changed when she tried not to tremble.

She closed her eyes.

Jealousy rose again, but in the bedroom it became fuel instead of fire. Daniel watched himself in the mirror touching the same hair Marcus had touched, and instead of feeling erased, he felt named.

'Open your eyes,' he said.

She did.

'Look at who you came home with.'

Elise's lips parted. A flush moved up her throat. 'You.'

'Again.'

'You, Daniel.'

He gathered her hair over one shoulder and kissed the place it had uncovered at the side of her neck. She leaned back against him with a sound so soft it felt private even from the room.

His hands found the zipper of her dress but did not pull it.

'May I?' he asked.

She smiled in the mirror. 'You never used to ask me that.'

'I used to assume closeness gave me fluency.'

'And now?'

'Now I want to hear the language.'

Her hand came up and covered his on the zipper. 'Yes.'

He lowered it slowly, watching the dress loosen by inches, watching her watch herself being seen. There was nothing hurried in it. No performance. No proving he could reclaim what had never been taken.

When the dress slipped from one shoulder, Daniel stopped and wrapped his arms around her from behind.

'Still with me?' she whispered.

He met her eyes in the mirror.

'Home,' he said.

Elise turned in his arms and kissed him with a hunger that had no witness, no third voice, no velvet rope or private room.

Only them.

And somehow, because of the night, more honestly them than before.
