CHAPTER 67
Permission in Reflection
The mirror made everything impossible to pretend.
Daniel could not tell himself Marcus was merely present. He could not tell himself Elise was unaffected. He could not tell himself his own hands were there only to protect. Reflection stripped motives of their costumes and left three adults staring at the arrangement they had chosen.
Elise's back rested against Daniel's chest. Marcus stood close enough that his warmth seemed to alter the air, though no part of him touched her. The service door remained ajar. Faint laughter drifted from the charity preview like a reminder that the normal world had not vanished.
Daniel wished, absurdly, that the door were closed.
The wish startled him so badly that he stiffened.
Elise felt it immediately. 'What changed?'
Marcus did not move, but his attention sharpened.
Daniel closed his eyes for one second. 'A thought.'
'Which thought?' Elise asked.
He could lie. He could call it nothing. He could protect his pride and poison the rules.
Instead he opened his eyes and looked at both of them in the mirror.
'I wondered what it would feel like if the door were closed.'
The corridor went very quiet.
Elise's hand tightened over his. Marcus's expression did not change much, but Daniel saw the breath he took before speaking.
'That is a bigger threshold,' Marcus said.
'I know.'
'Do you want it closed, or do you want to know that you could ask?'
Daniel almost hated him for the precision.
Elise turned her face slightly toward Daniel. 'Answer slowly.'
He took the instruction like a lifeline.
'I want to know I could ask,' he said. 'I do not know if I want the door closed yet.'
Marcus nodded. 'Then we leave it open.'
No disappointment. No pressure. No masculine impatience dressed as seduction. Just the rule, honored before it had to become rescue.
Daniel felt something inside him unclench.
Elise whispered, 'Thank you.'
Again, he did not know whether she meant him, Marcus, or the structure holding them all. Perhaps gratitude no longer needed one address.
Marcus stepped one pace back, giving the threshold room to settle.
Daniel breathed against Elise's hair. 'I want another permission.'
She looked at him in the mirror. 'Yours or his?'
'Mine first.'
Her eyes darkened.
Daniel moved his hands from her waist to her shoulders, slowly, visibly. He brushed his thumbs along the thin straps of her dress. The gesture was intimate enough that Marcus turned his gaze slightly away until Daniel spoke.
'Look,' Daniel said.
Marcus looked back, not at Elise's skin first, but at Daniel's face.
That mattered. God help him, it mattered.
Daniel's hands remained at Elise's shoulders. 'I want you to see that I am not disappearing.'
Marcus's voice was quiet. 'I see you.'
Daniel felt the words like a hand at his own back.
Elise's breathing grew uneven. 'Daniel.'
'Yes?'
'I want to be looked at.'
There was the door again, not made of wood this time, but honesty.
Daniel lowered his mouth to her bare shoulder and kissed her once. Then he lifted his head and met Marcus's eyes in the mirror.
'Carefully,' he said.
Marcus did not move closer. He simply let his gaze travel with deliberate restraint: Elise's face, the line of her neck, Daniel's hands on her shoulders, the burgundy fabric holding its shape around her. Nothing crude. Nothing stolen.
Elise trembled anyway.
Daniel felt the tremor travel into him and become something fierce.
'Enough?' Marcus asked.
The question came to Daniel.
He could have said yes. It would have been safe and honorable.
Instead he said, 'Tell her one thing.'
Marcus looked at Elise through the mirror. 'You are not beautiful because you are being watched. You are beautiful because you are allowing the truth of being watched to reach you.'
Elise closed her eyes.
Daniel held her through it.
The door remained open.
Some thresholds did not require closing to change everything.
