CHAPTER 76
The Hotel Lounge
The Grand Meridian lounge knew how to flatter everyone.
Its lamps wore silk shades the color of honey. Its leather chairs were deep enough to make posture feel optional. A pianist played old standards near the bar, soft and melancholy, the kind of music that made strangers look like they were remembering better versions of themselves.
Daniel did not trust the room.
He trusted the rule.
No touching between Marcus and Elise.
The three chairs Marcus had chosen formed a careful triangle. Not a booth. Not a couch. No accidental contact disguised as furniture. Elise sat with Daniel to her right and Marcus angled across from her. Daniel noticed the arrangement and felt both grateful and provoked.
'You chose the chairs on purpose,' he said.
Marcus sat back. 'Yes.'
'You could have let us discover that.'
'I prefer not to make furniture into a test.'
Elise looked down, smiling.
Daniel pointed at Marcus. 'This is what I mean. Annoyingly decent.'
'Would you prefer carelessness?'
'It would be easier to resent.'
Marcus accepted that without offense. 'I know.'
The honesty between them had begun to develop its own dark humor, and Daniel found himself depending on it more than expected.
They ordered sparkling water and one dessert to share, though no one ate much of it. The piano filled the spaces where conversation needed to breathe.
Elise seemed luminous under the hotel light. The green dress gave her a softer danger than the burgundy one, less fire and more deep water. Daniel kept his hand on the arm of her chair, not touching her constantly but close enough that she could reach him whenever she wanted.
She did.
Often.
Marcus saw every time and never appeared diminished by it.
At one point, Elise turned to him. 'Does it frustrate you?'
Daniel went still.
Marcus's gaze moved from Elise to Daniel, then back only when Daniel gave the smallest nod.
'Yes,' Marcus said.
The word was quiet and clean.
Elise's fingers curled around Daniel's.
Marcus continued. 'But frustration is not an emergency. It can be held.'
Daniel felt that sentence in his body.
Elise whispered, 'And what are you holding?'
The lounge seemed to lean closer.
Marcus's hands rested on his knees. Visible. Still.
'I am holding the fact that you look beautiful tonight,' he said. 'I am holding the fact that Daniel asked for no touching and that the rule makes me more aware of my hands. I am holding the fact that wanting does not entitle me to relief.'
Elise closed her eyes.
Daniel's grip tightened around her fingers.
The pianist moved into a slower song.
For a moment, Daniel forgot the other travelers, the bartender polishing glasses, the woman at the far table reading alone. He saw only Elise receiving Marcus's restraint like a caress that had not happened.
His jealousy flared hard.
He leaned toward her. 'Look at me.'
She opened her eyes and turned immediately.
'Good,' Daniel said, surprising himself with the authority in his voice. 'Stay with me while you hear him.'
Her lips parted. 'I am.'
Marcus looked down at the floor.
Daniel did not miss the effect that had on him either. Control moved through the triangle, but not in one direction. Sometimes Marcus commanded the room by holding back. Sometimes Elise commanded it by admitting desire. Sometimes Daniel commanded it by remembering he was allowed to lead.
The discovery steadied him.
He lifted Elise's hand and kissed her knuckles in full view of Marcus.
She trembled.
Marcus remained still.
Daniel said, 'Tell her one more thing. Still no touching.'
Marcus took a breath. 'Elise, the way you return to him every time you react is the most intimate thing in the room.'
Elise's eyes filled at once.
Daniel felt the words strike not as competition, but as recognition.
He turned her hand over and pressed his mouth to her palm.
The pianist finished the song. Applause scattered politely through the lounge. Reality returned in fragments.
Elise laughed softly, almost embarrassed by her own tears. 'This is ridiculous. We are in a hotel lounge crying over rules.'
Daniel brushed his thumb across her wrist. 'Expensive rules.'
Marcus added, 'With mediocre dessert.'
That broke them. Elise laughed fully, and Daniel laughed because she did, and even Marcus allowed himself a low, quiet laugh that made the tension briefly human again.
They stayed until eleven.
The no-touching rule held.
When Marcus walked them to the lobby doors, he kept his distance. Outside, valet attendants moved beneath the awning. Cars arrived and departed. The world refused to pause for their private revolution.
Elise stood close to Daniel in the night air.
Marcus looked at them both. 'You kept the rule.'
Daniel nodded. 'So did you.'
'Precisely,' Marcus said.
Elise shivered.
Daniel saw it and understood that the word had become part of the heat.
He opened the passenger door for his wife.
Before she got in, she looked at Marcus. 'Goodnight.'
'Goodnight, Elise.'
Daniel waited.
Marcus turned to him. 'Goodnight, Daniel.'
Daniel held his gaze. 'Goodnight for now.'
Marcus did not smile, but something in his eyes changed.
On the drive home, Elise rested her head against the seat and whispered, 'No touching was worse than touching.'
Daniel looked at the road, hands tight on the wheel.
'I know,' he said.
And God help him, he did.
