CHAPTER 78
Hands on the Table
The next meeting happened on Tuesday because Monday proved too close to wanting.
Daniel insisted on the delay. Elise agreed. Marcus accepted. The extra day did not cool anything, but it made the decision feel less like momentum and more like choice.
They chose the reading room at the Bellweather Club, an old public membership space attached to a hotel where Daniel occasionally attended charity board meetings.
The room had lamps with green glass shades, shelves of decorative books no one seemed to read, and a long central table polished to a deep shine.
It was public enough that staff passed through every few minutes and private enough that lowered voices could build their own weather.
Daniel liked the table.
A table made hands visible.
They arrived first. Elise wore a charcoal dress with sleeves to the wrist, almost severe except for the way it followed her when she moved. Daniel recognized the choice. If hands were the subject of the evening, she had dressed the rest of herself in restraint.
'You are dangerous,' he said as she sat.
She folded her hands on the table. 'I am trying to be disciplined.'
'Exactly.'
Marcus arrived at eight ten. He paused when he saw the table, then gave Daniel the smallest nod.
He understood.
They spoke for twenty minutes before anyone named the rule. Daniel needed that. He needed to see Marcus discuss ordinary things with Elise while wanting waited in plain sight. He needed to prove that the man could remain human and not become only a symbol of everything Daniel feared.
At eight thirty-two, Elise placed her right hand palm down on the table.
Not toward Marcus.
At the center.
Daniel's entire body went still.
She looked at him. 'I want to ask now.'
His mouth was dry. 'Ask.'
She turned to Marcus. 'May your hand cover mine? Only there. Only until Daniel says stop or I move away.'
Marcus did not answer her first. He looked at Daniel.
The reading room seemed to hold its breath.
Daniel heard a staff member laugh in the hall. A page turned somewhere behind the shelves. Ordinary sounds, saving him from myth.
He placed his own hand beside Elise's, close enough that their little fingers touched.
'Yes,' he said.
Marcus's gaze returned to Elise. 'Yes.'
He moved slowly. No flourish. No theatrical pause. His hand came across the polished table and settled over Elise's.
Daniel felt the contact as if it had happened to his own skin.
Elise's eyes closed.
That was the hardest part. Not Marcus's hand. Not the size of it, not the contrast between his darker sleeve and her pale fingers, not the terrifying gentleness of the contact. It was Elise's face. The way pleasure arrived without permission to be anything but real.
Daniel's jealousy surged so hard he nearly said stop immediately.
Elise opened her eyes before he could.
She found him.
Stayed with him.
Her free hand turned slightly, hooking one finger around his.
That saved him.
'Report,' she whispered.
Daniel could barely speak. 'Jealous.'
'Anything else?'
He looked at Marcus's hand covering hers. Marcus did not move. Did not stroke. Did not claim. Simply held the contact like a responsibility.
'Moved,' Daniel admitted.
Elise's eyes softened.
Marcus remained silent.
Daniel looked at him. 'And you?'
Marcus answered with visible care. 'Honored.'
The word was not seductive. That made it worse.
Daniel gave a sharp, almost helpless laugh. 'Of course that is your answer.'
'It is the true one.'
Elise's thumb moved once beneath Marcus's hand.
Daniel saw it.
Marcus felt it.
All three of them changed.
Daniel's voice lowered. 'Still.'
Elise froze. Marcus froze.
Daniel realized they had obeyed before understanding whether he meant stop.
The power of that obedience shook him.
'I did not mean stop,' he said. 'I meant hold still. Let me look at it.'
No one moved.
He looked.
His wife's hand beneath another man's. His own hand beside hers. The polished table reflecting all of it in dark fragments. A public room. A private earthquake.
He let the image enter him without turning it into a verdict.
After thirty seconds, he said, 'Enough.'
Marcus lifted his hand immediately.
Elise exhaled and brought her hand back to Daniel. He took it between both of his, warming the place Marcus had covered.
There was no reclaiming in it. Not exactly.
There was recognition.
Elise leaned toward him. 'Thank you.'
Daniel kissed her fingers.
Marcus looked away.
Daniel noticed and said, 'No. Look.'
Marcus looked back.
Daniel held Elise's hand in both of his, right where Marcus had touched her.
'I am still here,' Daniel said.
Marcus's voice was rougher than usual. 'Yes, you are.'
The reading room lights hummed softly above them.
Elise's eyes shone.
Nothing more happened that night.
Nothing needed to.
The contact had lasted less than a minute, but as they left the Bellweather Club, Daniel understood that time was a terrible measurement for certain thresholds.
Some moments were brief because they were full.
