CHAPTER 81

The Private Library

The private library at Bellweather did not feel like a room designed for secrets.

It felt older than that, as if it had learned to keep them long before Daniel, Elise, and Marcus stepped across its threshold.

Green-shaded lamps cast soft pools of light over polished tables.

Leather chairs faced one another with formal patience.

Behind glass-fronted shelves, old books stood in perfect rows, their gilded spines catching the light like quiet witnesses.

Daniel noticed everything because noticing gave him something to do with his hands.

The brass latch on the door. The dark city outside the tall windows.

The way Elise's fingers tightened once around his before loosening again.

The controlled placement of Marcus near the far table, close enough to be unmistakably present, far enough away that no one could pretend he had cornered them.

'Before anything,' Marcus said, 'I want to confirm the room is acceptable.'

The question should have been unnecessary. He could see it was acceptable. They were already inside. Yet the asking made the room change. It reminded Daniel that this was not a seduction sweeping them away. This was a deliberate crossing, measured in words before touch.

Elise looked at Daniel first. He nodded, not because he was unafraid, but because he wanted his yes to have weight.

'It's acceptable,' she said.

Marcus inclined his head. He wore a charcoal suit instead of the black security uniform from Aster Hall, but the same discipline lived in him. The same unhurried stillness. The same unnerving sense that he could read every flicker Daniel tried to hide and would not punish him for it.

'Hands only unless both of you ask for more,' Marcus said. 'Shoulder or upper back only if Daniel is beside you. No embrace. No kiss. No moving you away from him. If either of you says stop, I stop immediately.'

Daniel felt the list strike him with unexpected force. Limits had never sounded so intimate. Each one drew a line around their marriage, and the line did not make the desire smaller. It made the desire survivable.

Elise's voice was soft. 'Yes.'

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel swallowed. 'Yes.'

Only then did Marcus move. He did not approach Elise directly. He approached the table between them and rested one hand on the back of a chair, a gesture so mild it should have meant nothing. Daniel's body disagreed. Elise's breath changed beside him.

'Would you like to sit?' Marcus asked.

Elise looked again to Daniel, and he understood with a shiver that she was not asking permission to obey Marcus. She was asking whether he was still with her. Whether his yes had survived the first few inches of the night.

'Sit,' Daniel said, and the word came out rougher than he intended.

Elise lowered herself into the leather chair. The charcoal dress moved over her knees with a whisper. Daniel sat beside her, close enough that their shoulders nearly touched. Marcus took the chair opposite them, leaving the space between them open, visible, honest.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The silence should have embarrassed Daniel. Instead it deepened the room. The lamps hummed faintly. Somewhere beyond the glass doors, a server crossed the reading room with the careful footsteps of someone trained not to disturb privacy. Daniel could feel his pulse in his palms.

Marcus folded his hands on the table. 'Tell me where the evening begins.'

Daniel stared at him.

Elise answered before Daniel could. 'With us.'

The words landed exactly where they needed to. Not with Marcus. Not with a touch. With them.

Daniel turned to her. Her eyes were bright, nervous, brave. He reached for her hand under the table, and she took it at once.

Marcus saw the movement and looked away, giving them the dignity of not being watched for one small moment.

That was when Daniel knew the room was safe enough to be dangerous.
