CHAPTER 83
The Shape of Permission
After the first touch ended, the room seemed louder.
Daniel heard the low thrum of the building's air system, the distant roll of tires on wet pavement below, the muted clink of glass from the club bar two rooms away.
Ordinary sounds, but each one felt sharpened, as if Marcus's hand on Elise's shoulder had tuned the world to a more dangerous frequency.
Elise remained turned toward Daniel, both of her hands in his. The contact steadied him. It also exposed him. There was no pretending now that this was happening around him. It was happening through him, with his words, his pauses, his watching.
'I thought I would feel smaller,' he said.
Elise searched his face. 'Do you?'
'No.' He almost seemed surprised to hear himself. 'I feel... visible.'
Marcus had returned to the opposite side of the table, but he did not sit. 'That is different.'
Daniel looked at him. 'Is it?'
'Very.'
The answer should have annoyed him. It did not. Marcus had a way of stating things without trying to own them. Daniel found himself wanting to argue less and understand more.
Elise brushed her thumb over Daniel's knuckles. 'Visible scares you.'
'You being desired scares me,' Daniel said. 'Me wanting to witness it scares me more.'
The sentence stayed in the room between them. No one rushed to soften it. That had become one of the rules too, though no one had written it down: do not rescue the truth too quickly.
Elise's eyes filled, but she smiled. 'I don't want you hidden from it.'
Daniel looked down at their joined hands. 'That is the shape of permission, isn't it? Not me handing you away. Me standing where I can still be seen.'
Marcus lowered himself into his chair. 'Permission without presence often becomes performance. Presence changes it.'
Daniel glanced at him. 'You talk like a man who has given this too much thought.'
'I work nights,' Marcus said. 'People show you more of themselves when they think an evening is over.'
Elise's smile flickered, private and interested. Daniel felt the familiar pang, but it did not arrive alone anymore. It carried curiosity with it.
'What did you see in us?' Daniel asked.
Marcus did not answer immediately. That restraint again. Daniel both hated and trusted it.
'At Aster Hall?' Marcus said. 'I saw a woman used to being admired politely, and tired of polite admiration. I saw a husband who noticed before anyone else did. And I saw both of you pretending not to know that noticing was part of the marriage.'
Elise went very still.
Daniel felt the words move under his skin. They were not flattering. They were accurate.
'And tonight?' Elise asked.
Marcus looked at her, then at Daniel, then back to her only after Daniel did not look away. 'Tonight I see a couple deciding whether desire can be invited without becoming the host.'
Daniel let out a breath that almost became a laugh. 'That sounds expensive.'
Elise laughed first, then Daniel did, and the tension loosened enough for them to remember they were alive and not only negotiating with fire.
Marcus smiled faintly. 'Bellweather is expensive.'
The joke, small as it was, changed the night. It made Marcus more than a force. More than a test. He was a man across the table, careful and dangerous, yes, but human.
Elise leaned back slightly. 'I would like to try again.'
Daniel felt the fear rise, but it did not knock him over. 'Shoulder?'
She nodded. 'Shoulder. Maybe upper back. Only if you say yes once it begins.'
The distinction mattered. She was not asking for a blank check. She was asking to discover one inch at a time.
Daniel looked at Marcus. 'You ask each time.'
'Each time,' Marcus said.
Daniel looked at his wife. The black curve of her dress, the bright uncertainty in her face, the hand she still refused to remove from his.
He nodded.
This time, when Marcus stood, Daniel did not brace against the room.
He made himself part of it.
