CHAPTER 89

The Third Invitation

They waited two days before sending another message.

Not because they had lost courage, and not because the memory had cooled.

If anything, the waiting made it warmer, turning the library into something they revisited in glances across the kitchen, in the pause before sleep, in the way Elise sometimes leaned her shoulder against Daniel and let him understand exactly what she was remembering.

On the second evening, Daniel found her on the back patio with the legal pad open on her knees. The air smelled faintly of jasmine and rain-wet concrete. She had added a new line beneath What surprised us.

I liked Daniel giving the second yes.

He read it and felt the same rush he had felt in the library, sharpened now by daylight honesty.

'That was yours to write?' he asked.

'Yes.'

'Tell me.'

She looked embarrassed, but she did not retreat. 'When Marcus asked you after asking me, it made me feel...' She searched for the word. 'Chosen twice.'

Daniel sat beside her. 'By him and by me?'

'No.' She shook her head. 'By me and by you. Marcus was the occasion. You were the meaning.'

He had to look away toward the dark yard.

'You cannot say things like that while I am trying to remain a reasonable person,' he said.

She smiled. 'We have established that Marcus is the reasonable person.'

'Unfortunately.'

They sat quietly for a while. Then Daniel picked up the pen and wrote beneath her line: I liked having a yes no one could skip.

Elise read it and leaned her head on his shoulder.

'What would the next invitation be?' she asked.

The question did not surprise him. It had been living between them since morning.

'Same room,' he said. 'Same limits.'

She waited, knowing there was more.

Daniel forced himself to continue. 'Maybe he stands behind you while I face you.'

Elise's breathing changed.

'No new areas of touch,' he added quickly. 'Shoulder or upper back. But I want to see your face fully this time. I want you looking at me while you feel it.'

Her cheeks flushed in the fading light. 'That sounds more intense.'

'Yes.'

'Are you asking because you want to test yourself?'

Daniel considered lying, then remembered what they had built. 'Partly. But mostly because I want to be the place you look when it happens.'

Elise set the legal pad aside and took his hand. 'Then that is the rule.'

They wrote the message together. Daniel typed slowly, aware that every word was not just instruction to Marcus but architecture for themselves.

We would like to meet again at Bellweather, same private library if available.

Same limits: hands only, shoulder or upper back over clothing, asked each time.

This time, I would like to face Elise while you stand behind her.

She will keep her eyes on me unless she chooses otherwise.

I may call pauses. No additional touch, no kissing, no moving her away from me.

Elise read it twice. 'Add that I may call pauses too.'

Daniel smiled, chastened. 'Right.'

He added: Elise may call pauses at any time.

They sent it.

Marcus replied twenty minutes later.

I understand. Same room is available tomorrow at eight. I will follow those limits exactly. I would also suggest you choose a specific signal for pause, in case speech becomes difficult.

Daniel groaned. 'I hate when he is right.'

Elise laughed softly. 'What signal?'

Daniel took her hand and squeezed twice.

'This,' he said. 'Two squeezes means pause.'

She returned the gesture, two gentle pulses against his palm.

'Pause,' she said.

He kissed her knuckles. 'And stop remains stop.'

'Always.'

The third invitation glowed on the phone between them.

Tomorrow had a shape now.
