CHAPTER 96
Aster Hall Again
Two weeks later, the invitation to Aster Hall arrived in cream cardstock with raised black lettering, as if nothing had happened there except philanthropy and champagne. Daniel found it in the mail and stood in the hallway longer than necessary, thumb resting on the embossed name of the venue.
Elise came out of the study and stopped when she saw his face.
'Aster?'
He nodded.
She crossed the hall and took the invitation from him. It was a winter benefit, another private event, another room full of polished people pretending money made desire behave. Security provided by the same firm, the card noted in tiny print at the bottom.
They both read that line twice.
'We do not have to go,' Daniel said.
'No,' Elise agreed. 'We do not.'
They went.
Not because they needed another test. Not because they had run out of restraint.
They went because avoiding Aster Hall forever would have given the building too much power.
They dressed carefully that evening, not as costumes, but as statements.
Daniel chose a black suit that fit better than the tuxedo he had worn the first night.
Elise wore a deep green dress with a high neckline and a back that made Daniel stop speaking for three full seconds.
'Report?' she asked, amused.
'Proud. In danger. Married.'
'Good report.'
Aster Hall looked exactly as it had the first time: marble floors, velvet ropes, amber chandeliers, tall windows full of city lights. The familiarity struck Daniel with such force that he nearly reached for Elise's hand in panic. She reached first.
'Here,' she said.
'Here,' he answered.
They moved through the event differently now.
Daniel noticed admiration and did not immediately turn it into a threat.
Elise accepted compliments without shrinking or using them as weapons.
When a man in a silver tie held her attention a little too long, she thanked him, turned back to Daniel, and let her hand rest against his chest with quiet purpose.
The gesture warmed him all the way through.
Marcus appeared near the ballroom doors at nine fifteen.
Daniel saw him before Elise did. The recognition moved through his body like a struck match. Marcus wore the black security suit again, earpiece in place, posture disciplined, eyes moving over the room with practiced efficiency.
Then he saw them.
His expression did not change, but his attention did. Daniel could feel it, the small recalibration of a man who remembered a private library and chose professionalism anyway.
Elise followed Daniel's gaze.
Her hand tightened once around his.
'Report,' Daniel whispered.
'Surprised. Warm. Steady.'
'Do you want to leave?'
She looked at him, then back at Marcus, then at the room that had started all of this. 'Not yet.'
Daniel nodded. 'Then we stay.'
Marcus did not approach immediately. He remained at his post, exactly where he belonged. That, more than any greeting, made Daniel trust the next minute.
They danced once before Marcus came near them.
Elise moved in Daniel's arms under the amber lights, and every step told him the same thing: whatever had happened at the edge of their marriage had sent them back toward the center. Not unchanged. Not innocent. But centered.
When the song ended, Daniel kissed her hand.
Only then did Marcus appear at a respectful distance.
'Mr. and Mrs. Vale,' he said.
Daniel smiled faintly. 'Mr. Reed.'
Elise's eyes glittered. 'Good evening.'
'Good evening.'
Nothing else was said.
Everything else was remembered.
