Demihumans first step
The sun hovered above Ashenveli as Voltaro led the twenty exhausted demi-humans toward the village gates.
The path widened, revealing the settlement carved from hard work, resilience, and the hopes of people who had once been lost. Wooden houses lined the sides, the streets clean, the atmosphere calm and steady with quiet productivity.
But as the newcomers saw the village for the first time, they halted.
Selena's ears twitched. The children behind her clung to her clothes, trembling. Some adults froze, their legs shaking so badly they could barely remain standing. Their eyes darted around, scanning the unfamiliar houses, the fields, the gathering ash-smelling air, and-most of all-the people.
Ashenveli villagers stood silently, eyes fixed on the approaching group. Their expressions weren't hostile, merely cautious and curious. They had never seen a demi-human in person. And the demi-humans had never seen this kind of settlement-simple but thriving, peaceful yet strong.
Voltaro paused and looked back.
The demi-human elder swallowed hard. "We... we don't wish to cause trouble..."
"You aren't," Voltaro said firmly.
But still they hesitated. Fear clung to them like tightly wound rope-fear of humans, fear of judgment, fear of another betrayal. After everything Eldrath had done to them, their instincts screamed to turn back into the forest.
Selena felt their trembling and took a deep breath. "It's safe," she said softly. "Voltaro brought me out alive. He protected us. Ashenveli... is different."
Yet the group remained rooted in place.
Voltaro walked forward, standing between the two sides. His voice rose just enough for all to hear.
"These people," he said, gesturing to the villagers of Ashenveli, "are your new neighbors. Your new home lies here."
A distant murmur ran through the villagers. Children peeked from behind doorways. Adults stood still, measuring the situation. But no blade was drawn, no expression twisted into disgust.
It was a moment of raw uncertainty. A single spark could change everything-either shatter trust or build something new.
And then, unexpectedly, that spark came from the smallest soul in the village.
A very young Ashenveli boy-no more than six-broke into a sprint.
"Waiiit!!" he shouted at the top of his voice, his tiny legs pumping with all the enthusiasm of childhood.
Voltaro blinked. "Oh no-"
"Kid, wait!" Raven called after him, but the boy was already far ahead.
The villagers gasped as the child ran straight toward the demi-human group.
The demi-human children shrank back. One young demi-human boy, around eight years old, squeaked in fear and bolted behind Selena, gripping the hem of her cloak tightly.
The Ashenveli boy slowed to a jog as he neared them. He lifted his small hand-not aggressively, but gently, openly, like a greeting.
"Hi!" he said, smiling wide. "My name's Rudo!"
The demi-human boy peeked out from behind Selena. His animal-like ears drooped with fear. His tail curled defensively behind his leg.
Rudo tilted his head, still smiling. "Do you wanna... uhm... be friends?"
The clearing fell into absolute silence.
Selena looked down in disbelief.
The demi-human boy trembled, torn between fear and curiosity. His eyes darted to the adults around him-then back to the strange human child.
Rudo stepped closer, but slowly, almost instinctively gentle.
He lowered his hand and whispered, "It's okay... I won't hurt you. I just... want someone to play with."
The demi-human boy hesitated... then shyly extended his small hand, making the faintest contact.
The moment their hands touched, Rudo's face lit up.
"We're friends now!" he declared loudly.
The demi-human boy blinked in confusion, then let out a tiny, timid smile.
And Rudo laughed.
A loud, innocent, unrestrained laugh-so bright it echoed off the village walls.
His laughter struck the villagers harder than any speech could.
The harsh feelings, the worries, the fear-they cracked. The villagers exhaled. The demi-humans loosened their tense shoulders. A sound rippled subtly through the air, like relief.
Children-Ashenveli children who had been hiding-peeked out again. Some giggled. Others walked forward, emboldened by Rudo's courage.
"Is he like a cat?"
"He has fluffy ears!"
"He looks cool!"
The demi-human boy, overwhelmed but smiling now, let out a little laugh of his own. Selena stared at him in awe.
Voltaro watched the scene unfold with a quiet smile. Of course, he thought. Only a child could bridge the fear this quickly.
Raven exhaled. "I swear... that kid is more fearless than both of us combined."
With the single moment of warmth spreading through the crowd, the twenty demi-human refugees took their first step into Ashenveli.
Slowly.
Hesitantly.
But willingly.
No one forced them. No one pushed. No one judged. The villagers parted to make a path for them.
Selena guided the children, elders, and injured as they stepped inside the village. She felt the tension in her chest loosen. The eyes watching them now felt curious, not hostile.
A middle-aged Ashenveli woman approached her, offering a gentle smile.
"You must be tired," she said. "There's food prepared for all of you. Come."
Selena's throat tightened with emotion. "Thank you... truly..."
The villagers led the demi-humans to the open square, where warm soup and freshly baked root-bread awaited. The refugees' eyes widened. Some cried quietly as they ate the first real meal they'd had in weeks.
As the warmth spread through the group, Voltaro felt a faint pulse inside his mind-a familiar, system-like whisper.
A translucent text appeared before him:
[ Territory System Update ]
Population Increased: 144 → 164
New Residents: 20 Demi-Humans
Territory Growth Level: +1
Current Status: Developing Village (Stage 2)
Voltaro blinked in mild surprise. Raven, sensing the change in his expression, leaned over.
"You got an update?"
Voltaro nodded slightly.
Ashenveli had just taken its next step forward-not through battle, not through conquest, but through unity.
Behind him, the sound of children laughing filled the air again.
Rudo was already playing tag with the demi-human boy, weaving between elders and houses as they chased each other.
Their laughter wasn't just noise.
It was a promise.
A promise that the world could be different.
A promise that Ashenveli could become a sanctuary for those seeking hope.
A promise that the darkness of Eldrath's cruelty could one day be burned away.
Selena approached Voltaro with a warm but emotional expression. "Thank you... for giving them this chance."
Voltaro looked at her gently. "You deserve one too."
She lowered her eyes, cheeks warming.
The villagers continued to welcome the demi-humans, bringing blankets, water, and smiles. A few cautious glances lingered, but none with hatred-only curiosity and care.
Selena looked around, watching her people finally eating, finally breathing, finally resting.
Then she whispered, almost to herself:
"Ashenveli... might truly become our home..."
Voltaro heard it and nodded quietly. "It will."
For a brief moment, peace settled over the young territory.
But Voltaro knew peace was only the beginning.
Eldrath would return for what they considered theirs.
And when that day came, Voltaro would be ready-not alone, but with a strengthened Ashenveli... and allies who now understood what it meant to truly be free.
Too be continue...
