Chapter 4 The Council of Shadows

The Council of Shadows

They came for her before dawn, though dawn in the Umbral Realm was not a thing of sunrises and golden light but a gradual brightening of the silver luminescence that permeated everything, as though the Garden itself were waking from a dream and remembering to glow.

Sera had not slept. She had spent the hours since Oren's departure sitting on the edge of the cot in the guest chamber, turning the nightbloom over in her fingers and watching its silver veins pulse in time with the pulse in her wrists.

The flower had not wilted. If anything, its light had grown steadier, as though it were settling into a rhythm that matched her own, and each pulse sent a faint warmth through her fingertips that was not unpleasant but was not entirely comfortable either.

It felt like being held by something that was simultaneously part of her and separate from her, and she could not decide whether the sensation was comforting or invasive.

The knock at the door was soft but carried a resonance that she felt in her sternum, a low vibration that preceded the sound itself by a fraction of a second.

Sera set the flower on the cot beside her and stood, straightening her coat with hands that were steady only because she willed them to be.

The coat was the only garment she still possessed from the Sunlit Realm, its heavy canvas now smelling faintly of the Garden's ambient sweetness, and she clutched the collar of it the way another woman might clutch a talisman.

The door opened without her permission. A figure stood in the corridor beyond, tall and slender and wrapped in a cloak of shifting shadow that moved like smoke over water.

The figure's face was angular and pale, its features precise to the point of severity, and its eyes, which caught the silver light and returned it with an intensity that made Sera's breath catch, were the color of frozen mercury.

This was not a servant. This was someone who was accustomed to being obeyed without question.

"Seraphine Voss," the figure said. The voice was cool and measured, carrying the particular cadence of someone who had spent millennia ensuring that every word they spoke landed exactly where they intended.

"The Council of Shadows has convened. You will accompany me.

" It was not a request. Sera recognized the authority in the tone even though she had no frame of reference for it in the Sunlit world, where the most powerful people she had encountered were the merchant councilors of Ashenmere, men and women whose authority extended to tax rates and market regulations and who could be argued with, cajoled, or simply ignored if one was willing to accept the consequences.

The being in the doorway radiated a different order of power entirely, the kind that did not need to raise its voice or threaten consequences because the consequences were implicit in every syllable.

"I'll need a moment," Sera said. "You have none.

The Council does not wait." Sera held the figure's gaze for a long moment, and something shifted in the air between them, a subtle pressure that she recognized now as emotional resonance, the quality of shadow that Oren had described during his examination.

The figure's emotional state was guarded but not hostile, layered with a wariness that suggested it was assessing her as thoroughly as she was assessing it.

She filed the observation away and reached for the nightbloom without looking, her fingers finding its stem with an accuracy that surprised her.

"Then I won't keep them waiting." She followed the figure through corridors that she was beginning to understand were not built but grown, their walls composed of the same translucent, living material as the rest of the Court, their floors soft under her boots with a yielding that was disconcerting to her Sunlit instincts.

They passed through the Outer Ring, where the corridors widened and the walls grew more ornate, inlaid with shadow-crystals that pulsed with faint, irregular light, and then through a threshold that Sera felt as a physical sensation, a tightening around her ribs that released only when she was fully through it and standing in the Middle Ring.
