Chapter 1
When you grow up in rooms where the wrong sentence can cost you something, you learn to sharpen language like a blade.
You learn which words open doors, which ones shut people down, and which pull someone closer before they realize what they’re stepping into.
If you came here expecting a monster, you’ve misunderstood me from the start. Monsters are convenient. You point at them and get to feel better about yourself. I’ve never been that easy to place, and I won't give you that kind of distance. What should worry you isn’t what looks dangerous.
It’s the thing that speaks calmly and makes sense while it’s doing it. That’s usually where it starts.
I learned early that the line between a decent man and a dangerous one isn’t always in what he does, but in what he allows himself to think.
Most men have dark thoughts. A few admit it. Most don’t. That’s usually the only difference.
Some of this might land closer than you’d like. Our lives aren’t the same, but the thoughts aren’t as rare as people pretend. Fear, compulsion. The way something wrong can start to feel normal if you live with it long enough.
For years, I’ve wondered whether what lives in me is damage or design. Whether a mind pushed far enough breaks, or just shifts into something that can handle the pressure. I never found an answer. What I have instead is memory.
What happened, what I thought, what kept repeating until it stopped feeling like something I did and started feeling like me. Until I couldn’t tell where certain thoughts ended and I began.
Some things enter a man and remain there. Time does not wash them out; they only work their way deeper. They begin to alter how a man sees the world, what he allows, what he can live beside.
If I claim anything, it is only this. We are often less divided from what frightens us than we prefer to believe.
Some changes don't come as a rupture. They gather by degrees, so subtly you only notice once you find yourself standing somewhere you didn’t mean to arrive. You may not see when it happens. I may not either, but by the end of this, something will be different.
Not because I mean to alter you. I have no need for that. Only because some truths, once faced, do not go easily back into hiding.
I don’t need you to understand or like me. Fuck, that would be too easy.
What matters is that you stay. Because without someone willing to hear it, a confession collapses back into private thought, and then it’s just a man speaking to himself.
Some things can be said only in the presence of someone willing to not turn away. There is a discipline in that.
Most people react too quickly to what disturbs them. They rush to name it, and once they have named it, they think they are safe from it.
Spoiler alert, they’re not.
Some truths do not open at first contact. Instead they get stranger the longer you stay with them. That is all I ask of you. Stay with what unsettles you a little longer. Don’t be in such a hurry to resolve it.
What changes us is rarely the first shock, but what lingers after. And I suspect you know something of that already.
There is another thing I need you to understand.
People tend to imagine danger as something obvious. Teeth, force, blood, stuff like that. But what unsettles a system is often something less visible.
A person who keeps part of himself untouched.
A person who does not hand over every instinct just because he is told to.
That has always drawn suspicion.
I learned early that what gets called disorder is sometimes only refusal.
Refusal to be reduced. Refusal to let certain parts of yourself be pressed flat just to fit what others can tolerate.
You may reject that, but don’t forget it as we go on. Much of what follows will be misread if you assume obedience and goodness are the same thing.
With that being said, there is more to show than explain.
So let’s begin.
