Chapter 10 #3
Not him, not the door, not even the fact that he was sitting there like he belonged in a space that had never been his.
No, you. I know it wasn’t some big decision.
You didn’t sit there and actively choose to keep reading; you got pulled in, and now it’s hard to stop, even when something in you knows you should. Most people listen to that.
They don’t think about it; they just move, close it, shake it off, pretend it was nothing, but you didn’t.
You felt it, but instead of pulling away, you came closer, and that’s the exact point where this stopped being passive.
Where it stops being something you’re just reading and starts being something you’re part of.
Zwierek was still there, I hadn’t forgotten.
You don’t forget something like him, not when it’s sitting in your room, watching you like it already knows more than it should, but something had shifted in me. It took time before I understood what that actually meant.
Back then, it was just… a shift.
Subtle enough that I didn’t react to it, but clear enough that I didn’t ignore it either. I had spent years learning how to observe without interfering. How to let things exist long enough to reveal themselves. This felt like something that required the same patience.
Zwierek didn’t say anything else, and neither did I. But the silence between us wasn’t empty anymore. Before, it had been neutral. Something to move through.
Now it felt like it had a direction.
He stood after a while. I remember watching that more than anything.
Not the fact that he stood, but how meticulous it felt.
Like he was following a line I couldn’t see yet.
He moved toward the door without looking away from me.
That part matters because most people break eye contact when they leave a room.
It’s pure instinct, actually. A small release of tension.
But he didn’t seem to have that, and if he had, he either ignored it or hid it well.
“You’ll understand,” he said, in the same tone as before.
Not trying to convince me and not trying to warn me either.
Just stating something he had already accepted as true.
At the time, I thought he was referring to himself.
Or maybe to the room. To the fact that he had been kept behind a locked door like something that needed to be managed rather than understood.
That would have been the logical assumption, but it was also wrong.
He left after that. That should have been the end of it. A strange encounter, something to think about, and eventually place somewhere in the back of my mind with everything else that didn’t fit neatly into the structure I had built. But it wasn’t, because something had already moved.
Like a new variable had been introduced into a system that had previously been closed. And once something like that enters, you can’t remove it again. You can only observe what it begins to affect.
That was the first time I became aware of that process in real time.
The part where nothing has visibly changed yet, but the outcome has already been set in motion. I stayed on the bed for a while after he left. I was tracking and replaying small details, not emotionally, but structurally.
The way he spoke.
The way he didn’t need responses to continue.
The way he had already understood things I hadn’t expressed. And most of all, the way I hadn’t felt the need to resist any of it. That part took longer to place.
It didn’t concern me then, but it probably should have.
There’s something I need you to understand, little Ghost.
Not about him, but about this. About what you’re doing right now.
Because you think you’re just listening, but you’re not.
You’re taking it in. Like it belongs somewhere inside you. I can see it.
The way you let it settle instead of pushing it away the second it starts to feel like something you shouldn’t be this close to. Most people recoil, or at least hesitate, but you don’t. You just sit there like a good girl and let it happen.
I’m very pleased with you.
Because that kind of attention, it’s not passive and it never was.
It changes things. It changes me. Do you understand that?
The way you don’t look away from any of it, it does something to me. It does something to the way I continue. I adjust, maybe not consciously, but I do.
I start choosing what to show you, what to hold back, what you’ve earned, and what you haven’t.
You can feel it moving, can’t you?
That awareness that you’re not just being told something, you’re being let in. Slowly and on purpose. That’s the part I like. You’re careful, but not careful enough to leave, and that makes you interesting. More than you should be. More than is… useful. Because now I notice you differently.
Not as someone reading. Something closer, more present than you’re supposed to be. And once I notice something like that, I don’t ignore it.
I study it.
The way it reacts, the way it gives itself away without realizing it.
You’re doing that right now, you just don’t know it yet. But I do, and I’m not going to stop you. I want to see how far you’ll go before you finally feel the need to pull back. And if you get that feeling, little Ghost, dismiss it. Stay exactly where you are. Right there, and let it happen.
You’ve made it this far; it would be a shame if you stopped now.
