18.
Zayran is sitting in the back seat of his car. His fingers move fast over the laptop keys. The hurry is clear in his actions but his face stays calm.
He is trying to hack a system, but he fails again and again. Anyone else in his place would have lost their temper by now but Zayran does not.
The car is standing in a silent place. Grover stands outside, guarding the car. In front of them rises a huge, dark building. Behind it, a forest spreads wide and quiet, its trees standing like shadows.
Just right in front of the car is a temple. There is not a single soul present, only Zayran and Grover. The sound of the temple bell echoes slowly in the dark night sky. The night is about to fade and in a few minutes, morning will arrive.
Zayran takes a deep breath and throws the laptop beside him in frustration. He leans his head back against the seat and breathes deeply, trying to steady himself.
His boot clicks softly against the car floor, once… then again. His eyes slowly close. The sound of the bell grows dull in his ears, fading into the background the moment another noise reaches him.
The sound of anklets.
A sinister smile immediately appears on his lips. He does not open his eyes but his ears do not miss a single beat of the anklet’s sound.
The noise is coming closer to him, growing louder in the deep silence of the place. The air itself feels heavy, as if nature has stopped breathing. The anklet sound starts slowing down, step by step.
Zayran opens the car door and steps outside. His eyes finally fall on her.
Sita runs barefoot on the cold, hard road. The rough surface bites into her feet but she does not slow down. She is wearing a beautiful white dress, yet its beauty is hidden under blood spread across it.
She is the same Sita Tiwari who usually carries a bright shine on her face but not today. Today, she is in the worst state of her life.
Her eyes are puffy, swollen from crying and she looks like a complete mess right now. Her breath is uneven, her steps shaky. The moment she stops in front of the car, her vision blurs and tears threaten to spill again.
She takes a deep breath, then another, trying to control herself, trying not to break down so badly that she will never be able to gather herself again. Her chest rises and falls fast.
The moment he comes out of the car, her body freezes for a second. Where she is standing at the lowest point of her life, he stands calm and blank, untouched by chaos.
She stares at him like she wants him to understand everything without her saying it. She does not look away and neither does he. Both of them hold emotions so deep that barely anyone could recognize them.
Her lips tremble as she tightens her grip on her dress, clutching the fabric in her fists. She gulps hard and tries to speak but the words refuse to leave her mouth.
Her throat feels dry and tight with fear. He only stares at her, at her condition, at the state she is in. Slowly, she gathers courage and looks at him properly, straight into his eyes, searching for something she herself does not know.
“Shadi kar li jiye hamse” she finally says.
(Marry me)
The moment those words leave her mouth, the entire place feels like it stops. Even the leaves on the trees seem to stop moving. The air turns heavy, thick with silence. It feels like everything is waiting... waiting for his next word or maybe his next move.
Only she knows the consequences of these words. Her eyes lower after saying them, fear and hope mixing inside her. She waits for him to speak but he does not. She wants to hear his answer, desperately.
And he… he wants her to look at him. Slowly, she lifts her gaze and looks into his eyes, feeling as if he is playing with her mind, pulling her deeper into something she cannot escape.
“Aap kahti hain toh kar lete hain” he says with a smile on his face.
(If you say so, then let’s get married)
The cold air hits their faces at the same time. The leaves on the trees start moving fast, the night clouds and stars seem to shift with urgency. It feels like nature itself is witnessing something no one ever imagined would happen.
The silence of the place breaks not with sound but with a strange heaviness in the air.
“Grover” he calls out loudly.
Grover immediately runs toward the temple, understanding what his boss means without another word. His steps are quick and sure, as if this moment was already decided long ago.
“Chaliye, shaadi karte hain” Zayran says slowly as he takes a step toward her.
(Let’s go and get married)
She stares at him with hate, pure, burning hate. Her eyes scream everything her mouth cannot say. She wants to stop all of this. She wants to run to her Kanha, to hide behind him, to beg him to save her.
She does not know that Kanha is the one who has sent her here, straight to him.
Zayran turns around and takes a few steps toward the temple. But she stands there, frozen in her place. Tears fill her eyes as countless thoughts rush through her mind, driving her almost insane.
She feels like killing herself right now, ending everything but she cannot. And even if she tries, the man standing in front of her would never allow it.
She comes out of her thoughts when she feels him holding her sleeve. His grip is firm, possessive. He starts walking toward the temple, pulling her along with him. She stares at his hand holding her sleeve, unable to look away and follows him like a lifeless body.
Her feet move but her soul feels numb. Her heart thuds painfully, filled with fear, anger and helplessness all at once.
Her eyes fall inside the temple. The sacred fire is already burning in the agni kund, flames rising and crackling softly.
The pandit is sitting there with all the things needed for the marriage.
His face looks pale, fear clearly visible in his eyes.
He looks terrified for his life but he has no other option except doing what he has been told.
She had dreamed of many things about her marriage. This is not something she ever wanted. She never wanted to get married like this. But her Kanha has different plans for her. Right now, all her dreams are getting crushed into pieces, breaking silently inside her heart.
“H-haath aage badhaiye” the pandit says, his voice trembling slightly.
(Please extend your hand)
His words make her look toward him. He is already looking at her, his hand stretched out in front of her. Her tears fall slowly, one after another, dropping onto the temple floor.
She gulps hard, her throat burning. It is her own decision and now she cannot do anything except follow what she is being told to do.
Her trembling hand slowly moves toward his steady one. Her fingers shake as if they might give up midway.
Slowly, she places her hand on his. The moment their skin touches, the temple bells start ringing fast as the air rushes through them, creating loud, sharp sounds. He wraps his fingers around her trembling hand, enclosing it fully.
The moment his hand locks hers, her fate locks with him forever.
The pandit starts chanting mantras while pouring ghee into the kund. The flames rise high, burning brighter, their light reflecting clearly on both their faces. The fire crackles loudly, as if reacting to the moment itself.
“Phero ke liye aage badhiye” the pandit says hurriedly.
(Please step forward for the seven rounds)
His grip on her hand turns firmer, leaving no chance for escape. He starts walking and she walks behind him. Her eyes remain fixed on the ground, unable to look anywhere else.
With each phera she takes, she makes a vow in her heart. And in every vow, she promises herself to ruin him, to destroy him to the extent that he will die the worst death anyone could ever imagine.
Unaware of the future, she does not know that she is going to pay for these vows herself.
The pandit’s voice is rushed, his chants slow yet powerful, filling the temple with a heavy echo. Both of them move with an intention that no one could ever imagine or understand.
Each phera breaks her a little more from inside, shattering her silently. And each phera makes him stronger, more certain of his hold on her.
At the last phera, her tears fall directly onto their joined hands. He knows very well what she is feeling at this moment. And she, too, knows exactly what he is feeling right now.
They stand again. The pandit extends a vermilion toward him and he takes it in his hand. She stares at his hand, her eyes dry now, her tears seemingly finished.
She slowly lifts her gaze and looks at him. He takes sindoor on his finger and fills the parting of her hair. She keeps staring at him, unable to react and then her tears fall again, silently slipping down her cheeks.
“Aaj se aap dono pati patni hain” the pandit says.
(From today, you both are husband and wife)
At that very moment, the first rays of the sun fall on their faces.
She is now his wife. That’s it. They are married.
A marriage that is supposed to be sacred and pure, something done with a whole heart, yet here they are, married in such a situation where her heart beats only with fear.
There is no joy, no happiness, only a heavy truth she cannot escape.
Birds fly out of their nests, filling the air with soft sounds. They chirp and move freely and the air turns calmer. Nature itself seems to be celebrating, unaware of the storm inside her heart.
He leans toward her slightly, a smile playing on his lips.
“Let’s go home, Mrs. Zayran Kaalver” he says, each word filled with power, authority and undeniable right.
Just this name feels forbidden. What about them, then?
I enter his room. The entire mansion is silent, everyone is sleeping. I also want to sleep. I want to sleep for forever.
My knees wobble badly and I just can’t… I can’t hold myself anymore. My body gives up and I fall hard onto the cold floor. The pain spreads through me but it feels nothing compared to what is inside my heart. My tears start falling freely.
“W...why, Kanha… why?” I whisper, crying hard.
My hand clutches my blood-stained dress tightly. I wrap my arms around myself, holding myself together, trying to gather the broken pieces of me but it is impossible.
I hate him. I hate him.
“Kanha, kyun kiya aapne mere saath aisa, kyun? Maine kisi ke saath kabhi galat nahi kiya, toh mere saath kyun? Kanha, kyun kiya aapne mere saath aisa?” I complain to him, crying hard.
(Why did you do this to me, Kanha? I never did anything wrong to anyone, then why did this happen to me? Why you did this to me, Kanha?)
My tears fall onto my hands. My face feels sticky because of the tears that have not stopped since last night. My chest hurts and my breathing feels uneven as I keep crying, my voice breaking again and again.
The room door opens suddenly and my head shoots up. My breathing turns heavy, fast and shaky. My mind feels messy, crowded with fear and pain.
“S..sita” Tara says and runs toward me, kneeling in front of me.
I do not wait even a second and throw myself into her arms. I hug her tightly, holding onto her like she is the only thing keeping me alive.
“Tara, h..he… married… Tara, I...I ruined everything… Tara, sab khatam ho gaya” I try to speak but the words do not come out properly.
(Tara, everything is over)
My tears blur my vision and I can barely see her face.
“Shhh, Sita. Calm down first and then tell me what happened and why you are here” she says softly.
I break the hug and start sobbing badly. I begin hiccupping because of how hard I am crying. I try to tell her. She keeps caressing my hand and my back, trying to calm me.
“S...sita, yeh…” she says, and her eyes fall on my hair parting. She looks at me with a scared face. Her body freezes completely.
“T..tu aur s...sir…” she says, unable to complete her sentence.
I nod my head while crying hard. She pulls me into another tight hug, caressing my back again and again.
My body starts feeling weak and I find it difficult to breathe. My eyes feel heavy, slowly closing.
I want to sleep now. I am tired of everything. I am tired, Kanha. Your Sita is tired, Kanha.
“Sir, she fainted” the helper says urgently as she comes out of the room.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath. I get up at once and walk upstairs with fast steps.
“Call the doctors” I order Grover as I run inside the room.
As I enter, I see her lying on the cold floor. My steps stop for half a second. Then I move toward her, bend down and lift her in my arms. I place her on the bed immediately.
Her hair is messy, her face pale, her clothes wrinkled and stained. Everything about her is in a mess. She is not the same girl I saw back then. She is different now. Completely different.
The doctors enter the room after a few minutes. They start checking her. I stand there, my eyes not leaving her face even for a second.
I am not the one behind her condition. She came to me herself and asked me to marry her.
“Boss, everything is here” Grover says, standing at the doorstep.
I nod my head. Helpers start entering the room with different kinds of boxes and walk straight into the closet, placing everything inside.
“Give her these medicines and a full meal. She’ll be fine by tomorrow” the doctor says and then walks out of the room.
“Change her clothes” I say to the helper she is close with and trusts.
Without waiting, I walk out of the room. Grover follows me silently.
“Is everything set?” I ask while walking downstairs.
“Yes, boss” he replies.
As I reach the living room, my eyes fall on everyone present there. All of them are awake now, standing or sitting with confused and worried faces.
“What is going on so early in the morning? Doctors and all?” chachu asks, looking at me from head to toe, worry clearly audible in his voice.
“Nothing. My wife was not feeling well” I say calmly. Gasps echo through the entire living room.
“Your wife?” dadi asks, shock written all over her face.
I nod my head once.
“You are kidding, bhai” Shuraya says, laughing lightly.
I tilt my head and look at him. My stare is enough. His smile fades instantly. Shock spreads across everyone’s faces, one by one, as the truth settles in.
I turn around to walk out of the mansion, then stop mid-step.
“I dare anyone to roam around my room or try to enter it” I say in a slightly loud voice. Without waiting for any reply, I walk out of the mansion.
“Where are we going, Grover?” I ask while sitting inside the car.
“Your fans are dying to get a glimpse of you, so you’re going to show them your face, so they can stay alive” he replies while starting the car.
I smirk slowly.
I haven’t even started my game yet and she already fainted. Will she stay alive in the future when I truly start playing?
It’s funny. When they were playing their games, I stayed quiet. But now, when my time has come, they are all behaving like this.
They are all so bad.
