CHAPTER 28

HOME WITH THE SECOND INVITATION

The drive home was quiet until it was not.

For the first fifteen minutes, they let the road hold them.

Vineyard lanes gave way to dark highway, then familiar streets, then the ordinary geography of grocery stores and gas stations and neighborhoods where no one driving past them could possibly know that a cream card in Serena's purse had altered the pressure inside the car.

At a red light, Miles said, 'I did not like that she gave it to you first.'

Serena looked out the windshield. 'I know.'

'But I do not think she was wrong to.'

That made her turn. 'No?'

'No. It is your wanting that everyone keeps asking about. Mine has been allowed to hide inside reactions.'

The light changed. He drove.

Serena's voice was soft. 'Your wanting matters too.'

'I know. I am trying to make it speak instead of making yours carry the whole room.'

She reached across the console and took his hand. The gesture was simple, but after a night of symbols, simplicity felt almost luxurious.

At home, they did not go to bed. They went first to the dining room shelf, where the wrapped bottle waited beneath the anniversary photograph.

Serena placed Vivienne's card beside it.

Cream stock beside dark tissue. First Return beside Late Pour Salon.

The shelf looked suddenly curated, as if their marriage had begun collecting evidence.

'We are becoming people with artifacts,' Miles said.

'Better than becoming people with secrets.'

He looked at her. 'Yes.'

They changed into comfortable clothes and returned to the table. Serena took out the rule card and added the date of the public event beneath the others. Miles watched her handwriting, noticing how the lines had become steadier with each addition.

'We should talk about Julian's answer,' she said.

'Control.'

'Yes.'

Miles leaned back. 'It made me trust him more and less.'

'Same.'

'More because he admitted it.'

'Less because he knows exactly what he is good at.'

They sat with that. Outside, sprinklers clicked on somewhere down the block. The house hummed softly with appliances and settling wood.

'Did you want him to touch me tonight?' Serena asked.

Miles closed his eyes for one second. There it was: not the abstract conversation, not the safe analysis, but the question beneath the card.

'Yes,' he said. 'And no. In the same breath.'

'Tell me the yes.'

He opened his eyes. Serena sat still, braver than he deserved and exactly as brave as he needed.

'When he read your tasting note, I wanted him to reward you for it.'

Her lips parted slightly.

Miles forced himself to continue. 'Not because you needed reward. Because he saw something in you, and I wanted the seeing to become physical while I watched you decide whether to receive it.'

The room became very quiet.

'And the no?' she asked.

'The no wanted to put you in the car and drive away before anyone else could name you accurately.'

Serena smiled with sudden tenderness. 'Both sound like you.'

'I was afraid they would sound ugly.'

'They sound honest.'

She stood and came around the table. For one wild second Miles thought she might suggest opening the bottle. Instead, she sat sideways on his lap and wrapped her arms around his neck.

'I liked being given the card,' she whispered. 'But I liked coming home to discuss it more.'

Miles held her carefully. 'That might be the whole point.'

'Maybe.'

They stayed that way a long time. No wine. No Julian. No public room. Only the second invitation on the shelf and the two people who had decided, again, not to let desire outrun conversation.

When they finally went to bed, Serena left the card beside the bottle.

Miles noticed. She noticed him noticing.

Neither moved it.
