CHAPTER 75
THE VINEYARD WINDOW
The window gave them back as shadows. Serena in the center, Miles slightly behind her, Julian to her right.
Three figures suspended over the silver rows of vines, blurred enough to look like a memory before it had finished happening.
Miles stared at their reflection because the room itself had become too direct.
Serena leaned back just enough for her shoulder to touch his chest. The contact steadied him.
It also made the rest of her nearness to Julian more vivid, not less.
Miles could smell her perfume beneath the wine and candle smoke.
He could see the line of Julian's attention on her face, patient and unmistakable.
'I need a boundary,' Miles said.
Serena turned immediately. 'Tell me.'
The speed of her response nearly undid him. She was not annoyed. Not disappointed. She looked relieved to be given something solid.
Miles looked at Julian. 'No surprises.'
'Agreed,' Julian said.
'No moving faster because the room feels charged.'
'Agreed.'
Miles swallowed. 'And if I say weather, we stop talking around it. We check in.'
Serena nodded. 'Yes.'
Julian repeated, 'Yes.'
The word sounded different from each of them. From Serena it was a promise. From Julian it was a limit. Miles needed both.
Serena looked at her husband for a long moment. 'My boundary is no pretending tomorrow.'
That one landed harder than he expected.
'Meaning?' he asked, though he knew.
'Meaning we don't wake up and call this wine. Or ambience. Or a weird night that got away from us.' She touched his cheek. 'Whatever we choose, we admit we chose it.'
Miles closed his eyes against her palm. 'Agreed.'
Julian's boundary came last. He spoke it without drama. 'Mine is that I do not become a weapon between you.'
Miles opened his eyes.
'If either of you uses me to punish the other, I leave the room,' Julian said. 'Immediately.'
Serena's face changed, respect overtaking surprise. Miles felt it too, unwilling but real. The man across from them was not harmless. He was too aware, too attractive, too good at finding the hidden hinge in a marriage. But he was not careless.
'Agreed,' Miles said.
The boundaries settled around them like a second architecture inside the stone walls.
Serena breathed out. 'Now what?'
Julian looked at Miles. 'Now your husband decides where he wants to stand.'
Miles frowned. 'Why me?'
'Because he named the watching.' Julian's tone remained even. 'And because watching without choosing a place can become hiding.'
Miles hated that because it was true.
He looked at the room. The three chairs. The bottle. The low lamp. The window with the vineyard beyond it. Standing behind Serena felt safe because he could hold her. Standing beside Julian felt impossible. Sitting again felt like retreat.
He moved to the window.
From there, he could see Serena's face and Julian's, the space between them, and his own reflection ghosted over the vines. He was present, visible, not touching, not gone.
Serena watched him take the position. 'Weather?'
'Heavy,' he admitted. 'But clear.'
Julian nodded once, as if Miles had selected the correct glass for a difficult pairing.
'Serena,' he said, 'what do you want for the next minute?'
The question made the room narrow again.
She did not answer quickly. She looked at her husband by the window, and he could see her measuring him, not asking him to rescue her from her wanting, not asking him to disappear into it either.
'I want to be close enough to know if this is real,' she said.
Julian's gaze remained on hers. 'How close?'
Serena lifted one hand, palm hovering in the air between them. 'Start there.'
Julian raised his hand to meet it.
Their palms touched.
Miles felt the contact across the room as if someone had placed a glass against his own ribs and struck it. It rang through him. Serena did not lace her fingers with Julian's. She did not pull him closer. Palm to palm, they stood like two people testing the temperature of a door before opening it.
Miles watched.
He did not die from it.
The realization was almost laughable. Almost holy.
Serena's eyes flicked to him, asking a question without words.
He answered the same way, with a nod so small only she would understand.
The vineyard window held them all, and for the first time that night, Miles did not look away from his own reflection.
