CHAPTER 93

THE LESSON WITHOUT WINE

No one answered at first.

The request hung in the warm room like a candle flame no breath had yet disturbed.

Miles looked at Serena's hands, at the way they rested open near the stem of her glass.

She was not trembling. That steadied him.

It also frightened him. He had known her uncertain, playful, guarded, tired, amused.

This version of her had learned the shape of her own wanting and was not apologizing for it.

'What kind of lesson?' Miles asked.

Serena turned toward him. 'The kind where I don't have to pretend I only came here for wine.'

His chest tightened.

Julian remained silent, allowing the answer to travel where it belonged first. Miles loved him a little for that and resented him for making the love possible.

'Say it plainly,' Miles said, because plain speech had become their safest glass.

Serena nodded. She looked at Julian then. 'I want you close enough that I can feel how carefully you're holding back.'

The sentence changed the room. Julian inhaled once, slowly. Miles felt his own pulse answer as if the words had been spoken against his skin.

'Current weather,' Serena said to her husband, before Julian could respond.

Miles gripped the back of the chair. The weather inside him was violent, but not blinding. He could see. He could breathe. He could hate the distance closing and want to witness every inch of it.

'Heavy rain,' he said. 'Clear visibility.'

Serena's face warmed with relief and something more dangerous than relief.

Julian stepped around the table, no faster than he would approach a nervous animal or a priceless bottle. He stopped an arm's length from her.

'Here?' he asked Miles.

The question nearly undid him. It was directed to the husband, not because Serena lacked authority over herself, but because Julian understood that the marriage was the room. Miles nodded once.

'There.'

Serena looked up at the sommelier. In heels, she still had to lift her chin slightly. That small angle did something to Miles's breath.

Julian lowered his voice. 'No glass this time.'

'No glass,' Serena said.

He raised one hand, stopped, and waited.

Serena gave the permission herself. 'Yes.'

Julian touched only the back of her hand.

It was almost nothing. Four fingers resting over hers, warm and still. Miles could have laughed at the absurdity of his own reaction. He had imagined the world ending with some grand, irreversible gesture. Instead, a hand touched a hand, and his heart broke open around it.

Serena did not look away from Miles. That made it harder. That made it survivable.

'Tell me what you feel,' Julian said.

She answered her husband. 'Chosen.'

Miles could not speak.

Serena's eyes shone. 'By both of you, in different ways. And by myself, finally.'

Julian's hand did not move. He did not take more because more was available. He let the lesson remain exactly what she had asked for.

Miles understood then that restraint could be its own kind of intimacy, and that watching it might change him more deeply than any surrender to momentum could have.
