CHAPTER 95
THE KISS HELD IN TRUST
They sat for a long time before anyone stood again.
The wine changed as it opened. Miles noticed because noticing was easier than speaking. The late pour grew softer around the edges, more fragrant, less severe. It did not become simple, but it became willing to be understood. He wondered whether people were ever any different.
Serena's hand remained in his.
'I want to finish the lesson,' she said at last.
Miles felt the words move through him without surprise. The weather inside him had not cleared, but the storm no longer owned the whole sky.
'Plainly,' he said.
She nodded. 'I want to kiss him once.'
The room seemed to stop breathing.
Julian closed his eyes briefly, not in triumph, but in control. When he opened them, he looked at Miles before he looked at Serena.
'Only if that kiss belongs to both of you first,' he said.
Miles stared at him. 'That's a convenient thing to say.'
'Convenience would be asking Serena to decide quickly.'
That landed hard enough to be fair.
Serena turned toward her husband. 'No pretending. I want it. I also want to know that when I come back to you after, you believe the coming back.'
Miles looked at her mouth because looking at her eyes hurt too much.
He had kissed that mouth in parking lots, kitchens, hotel rooms, after arguments, before flights, half asleep in the blue light of morning.
He knew the shape of it better than any prayer.
The thought of another man receiving it made his jealousy rise bright and immediate. Beneath it, impossibly, was awe.
'One kiss,' he said.
Serena waited.
'Standing there,' he added, nodding toward the open space beside the window. 'No hiding from me. No closing me out.'
'Yes.'
'And afterward, you come to me first.'
Her eyes filled again. 'Yes.'
Miles looked at Julian. 'No performance.'
'No performance,' Julian said.
Serena stood. Miles stood with her, then released her hand because keeping hold would have made the permission a leash. She crossed the room slowly, every step visible, every step chosen.
Julian rose only when she reached him.
For a second they simply faced each other. The space between them held all the glasses, all the almost-touches, all the restraint that had made the want sharper instead of safer. Serena lifted her chin.
Julian did not take her. He met her.
The kiss was brief enough to be merciful and long enough to be true.
Miles felt it everywhere. Not as a wound exactly, though it hurt. Not as a theft, though something in him cried out with possession. He felt it as a door opening onto a room he had feared and imagined for years, only to find his wife turning back toward him before the echo faded.
Serena left Julian immediately after the kiss.
She crossed the room to Miles with tears bright in her eyes and no apology on her mouth. He opened his arms because the alternative was pride, and pride had never held him at night.
She came into him. His hands closed around her back.
'I came back,' she whispered.
Miles pressed his face into her hair. 'I saw.'
Julian stood by the window, breathing carefully, holding nothing he had not been given.
