CHAPTER 98

THE ROAD HOME

Vivienne was waiting beyond the door as if she had never moved.

If she noticed the brightness in Serena's eyes, the set of Miles's shoulders, or the way Julian remained one careful pace behind them, she gave no sign beyond a small nod. The house had the discretion of old stone and expensive secrets.

'Shall I call the car?' she asked.

Miles looked at Serena. She held the sleeved bottle in both hands. His jacket still rested around her shoulders beneath her coat, a detail so ordinary and intimate that it nearly brought him undone.

'Yes,' Serena said. 'Please.'

They walked back through the vineyard house in a silence that did not feel empty.

Public rooms reappeared one by one: the corridor with the framed maps, the marble counter where the evening had begun, the shelves full of bottles still waiting for other people's courage.

A server replaced candles at a distant table.

Somewhere, a couple laughed over dessert wine, unaware that a marriage had been dismantled and reassembled a few rooms away.

At the front doors, Julian stopped.

Serena stopped too.

Miles did not hurry her.

'Goodnight,' she said.

Julian's eyes held hers with controlled warmth. 'Goodnight, Serena.'

She touched the black sleeve around the bottle. 'Thank you for stopping when we stopped.'

'Thank you for asking clearly.'

Then Julian turned to Miles.

For the first time all night, neither man seemed to know what role to play. Rival was too crude. Friend was too easy. Stranger was no longer true.

Miles held out his hand.

Julian accepted it.

'You made it difficult,' Miles said.

'So did you.'

'Good.'

Julian's smile was faint. 'Good.'

Outside, the night air was cool enough to clear the wine from Miles's head without clearing the memory of it. Their car waited beneath the portico, headlights glowing in the mist. Gravel shifted beneath Serena's heels as they crossed the drive.

Miles opened her door.

Before she got in, she turned and looked back at the house. Julian was still visible in the doorway. Vivienne stood beside him, unreadable and elegant, guardian of thresholds.

Serena lifted her hand once.

Julian inclined his head.

Then she slid into the passenger seat with the bottle across her lap.

The first few miles passed without music. The road unspooled between dark vines and low stone walls, then opened toward the highway, where ordinary signs and gas stations began to return the world to scale.

Miles kept both hands on the wheel.

'Are you angry?' Serena asked.

He considered the question carefully. 'Yes.'

She nodded, accepting it.

'Are you hurt?'

'Yes.'

Her fingers tightened around the bottle.

He reached across the console and found her hand. 'Are you mine?'

She looked at him, startled by the old word and the new softness in it.

'Yes,' she said. 'And I am mine.'

Miles let out a breath he had carried since the first pour. 'I know.'

They drove home holding hands around the unfinished night.
