Chapter 40 #5

Days when old insecurities resurfaced.

Days when loving each other would feel difficult.

But this time...

They would face those days differently.

Not separately.

Together.

Because four years couldn't be repaired in a single night.

Love couldn't erase four years of pain with one embrace.

Forgiveness couldn't magically undo every lonely night.

And being beside each other again didn't mean the wounds had disappeared.

It simply meant they finally had someone to help carry them.

Lingling slowly intertwined her fingers with Orm's.

Orm looked down at their joined hands.

Four years ago, she had believed she would never hold that hand again.

Now it was holding hers.

Warm.

Real.

Still familiar.

Still the hand she remembered.

Still the hand her heart had somehow recognized after all those years.

Orm let out a tiny, broken laugh through her tears.

Lingling smiled through her own.

Neither woman knew what tomorrow would bring.

There would still be Paris.

There would still be Liam.

There would still be the life Lingling had built.

There would still be the life Orm had built.

There would be questions they couldn't answer yet.

There would be decisions they would eventually have to make.

There would be fears they would have to confront.

But tonight...

They didn't need all the answers.

Tonight, they only needed each other.

-

Lingling squeezed Orm's hand.

Orm squeezed back.

Neither said anything.

They didn't need to.

For once, silence didn't mean goodbye.

It didn't mean distance.

It didn't mean abandonment.

It simply meant that two exhausted hearts were finally resting in the same place.

Together.

After four years of wandering...

They had finally found their way home.

Lingling looked at Orm.

Orm looked back.

And somehow, neither of them was completely afraid of the future anymore.

Not completely.

There was still uncertainty.

There was still fear.

There was still distance.

There was still healing ahead.

But there was something they hadn't had in four years.

Something small.

Something fragile.

Something terrifyingly beautiful.

Hope.

Hope that perhaps this wasn't the end of their story.

Hope that perhaps the love they had buried was not dead.

Hope that perhaps some things could be broken without being destroyed forever.

Hope that perhaps two people could lose each other...

And still find their way back.

Orm slowly rested her head against Lingling's chest.

Lingling kissed her hair and pulled her closer.

Orm closed her eyes.

For the first time in four years, she allowed herself to stop being afraid.

She allowed herself to be held.

She allowed herself to breathe.

She allowed herself to hope.

She allowed herself to believe that maybe...

Just maybe...

This time, love would not ask them to let go.

Lingling whispered against her hair.

"Orm?"

"Hmm?"

"I don't know what tomorrow looks like."

Orm opened her eyes.

"Neither do I."

Lingling looked down at her.

"But I know I want you in it. Both you and Liam."

Orm's eyes filled with tears again.

She smiled.

"And I want you in mine."

Lingling pressed their foreheads together.

"No more mixed signals and late realizations?"

Orm shook her head.

"No more mixed signals, late realizations, and wrong decisions."

"No more running?"

"No more running."

"No more pretending?"

"No more pretending."

"No more giving up before we even try?"

Orm smiled through her tears.

"No more."

Lingling kissed her forehead then her lips.

Then she held her.

Not desperately this time.

Not as though she was afraid Orm would disappear.

But gently.

With the quiet certainty of someone who finally understood that love did not have to be held tightly to keep it from leaving.

Sometimes...

It simply had to be chosen.

Again.

And again.

And again.

One day at a time.

One conversation at a time.

One apology at a time.

One kiss at a time.

One healing moment at a time.

One step at a time.

Four years had been enough.

Four years of loneliness.

Four years of missing.

Four years of pretending.

Four years of wondering.

Four years of waking up without each other.

They had lost enough.

Now, they would find each other slowly.

Carefully.

Honestly.

And perhaps that was what made their reunion more beautiful than anything they had dreamed of.

Because this wasn't the love they had at twenty.

It wasn't untouched.

It wasn't innocent.

It wasn't perfect.

It had scars.

It had history.

It had regrets.

It had tears.

But it was still love.

And sometimes, the strongest love stories weren't the ones that never broke.

They were the ones that broke...

And somehow found a way to love again.

Two hearts had wandered through grief, sacrifice, distance, misunderstanding, loneliness, and hope.

Two hearts had spent four years believing they had lost everything.

But there, beneath the familiar Phuket sky, with tears still drying on their cheeks and their hands refusing to let go...

They finally found each other again.
