Brendan Davis, a brooding veterinarian of very few words, upends that peace after one visit to Barbacks, where watching Adrian dance becomes a mistake he cannot undo.

Soon Brendan is crossing the county for loaves he could buy closer to home and insisting the trip is purely practical.

A beagle, a bar tab, and a number written where it does not belong draw the baker and the vet together despite themselves.
