32. Lennie
THIRTY-TWO
LENNIE
After having one of the best nights of my life with Zombie, I ended up having the best day of my life too. I was finally able to track down Sarah and began corresponding with her as a potential buyer.
After the Hive and the Elite Squad met, minus Dante, everyone got ready for their mission to save Lily.
When we all had our tasks sorted, I continued to text with Sarah to keep the lead hot on her.
After what felt like hours of waiting, I got a text from Evelyn that Lily had been rescued successfully however we were now dealing with Badger being kidnapped.
I gripped the phone trying to get a hold of my emotions.
This poor girl. She had been waiting to find her sister for so long and the night it actually happened ironically was the night that she was also in danger that was unrelated to her sister.
I hated that I was in the confines of my hive instead of out in the field helping.
Logically I knew I was in the best place I could be especially with my skillset; however, emotionally this was wrecking me inside.
I tried calling Evan when I saw his location was moving at a fast pace but couldn’t get connected to him. I only prayed that everyone would get out of this situation unscathed.
Thankfully Badger had her tracking earrings on so I was able to pinpoint her location and sent it to the team.
My phone pinged with an incoming call from Evan an hour later.
“Did you get her?” I cried into the phone, desperate for good news.
Evan was breathless as he spoke into the phone. “Yes, I got her. I have both girls. Headed to the hospital now.”
“Are they going to be okay?” I asked with panic in my voice. Lily had been in captivity for years. Who knew what she had endured. Badger had only been captured for a few hours, but that didn’t mean that nothing bad had happened to her.
“They’re alive,” Evan said, a little distracted. “I think they will be okay.”
Relief flooded me at his statement. I knew he wasn’t a doctor but one could only hope that he knew Badger enough to tell if she were in really bad shape or not.
I got off the phone with Evan and stared at my computer screen for several moments digesting the gravity of what we had accomplished tonight. I couldn’t wait to celebrate with the team and most of all, Dante.
As I walked home with Jax, I couldn’t get over how good life was right now. Dante and I were in a great spot, Lily and Badger had reunited, and I had just gotten word from my dog breeder that all was a go to bring my little fur ball home.
When I finally got home to my own bed, I texted Dante goodnight with a kissing emoji before crashing.
When I woke up in the morning, I bounced out of bed, smiling and humming to myself as I got ready for the day.
I had always wanted a dog and today was the day that I finally was going to make my dream come true.
Seven weeks ago, I had gotten a notification from a breeder that a litter of Welsh Corgi puppies were just born and would be ready to be homed in a couple of months.
Today they were ready, and one of them was mine.
Before I forgot, I had sent a text to my landlord, AKA douche canoe that I would be bringing home a puppy today. When I didn’t get a response right away, I figured that was a good sign.
My mind kept replaying the night at the club with Dante and the way he’d made love to me afterward. I felt so in sync with him even though we had just had a really hectic night with Sarah.
My mood was soon soured some when I got a text from Dante as I was on my way to get my little fur baby.
DANTE:
We couldn’t find Sarah’s body in the fire. But if she is alive, she’s most likely severely injured. There were no direct routes to escape from where she fled.
My heart sank into my stomach. If she wasn’t there did that mean she was still alive? So many questions swirled in my head. Shortly after I received Dante’s text, I got another one from my asshole of a landlord and my mood plummeted even further.
DOUCHE CANOE:
Lennie, you are not allowed to have a dog. It states it clear as day in the lease. If you break this rule, you are in breach of your lease. NO DOGS!
My mind raced as I came up with a plan for the new pup in my life. I only hoped it worked.
