Chapter 39 #2
The relief that washes over his face is immediate, and I catch the small upturn of his lips—barely there, but enough to make warmth bloom in my chest. "Good," he says, and that single word carries layers of meaning that only I can decipher.
Good that I'll be safe. Good that I'll be sober. Good that I'll come back to him.
Then Harper is pulling me through the house toward the garage, her excitement infectious as she chatters about the night ahead.
We climb into her sleek BMW, and I adjust the driver's seat to accommodate my shorter legs while she takes control of the sound system.
The pulsing beat she settles on fills the car with energy, and I can't help but feel like we're embarking on some grand adventure.
Twenty-five minutes later, I'm staring up at what looks like any other upscale business building in this part of the city. Glass and steel reaching toward the night sky, discreet signage, nothing at all like what I imagined an underground sex club would look like.
"This is it?" I ask, unable to hide my confusion.
Harper grins at my expression. "The best secrets hide in plain sight," she says cryptically, directing me toward a private parking area tucked behind the building.
We make our way to what appears to be a service entrance—completely unmarked, guarded by a man in an expensive suit with an earpiece curled around his ear. He looks like he could snap someone in half without breaking a sweat, but his demeanor is perfectly professional.
"IDs," he says, extending a gloved hand.
Harper produces hers with the confidence of someone who belongs here, while I fumble nervously with my clutch. My hands are trembling slightly as I hand over my license, and the guard scans both with some kind of high-tech device that beeps softly.
"Ms. Grayson, welcome back. Your performance space is prepared as requested." He turns those sharp eyes to me, and I fight the urge to shrink back. "Ms. Caldwell, your information is already in our system."
My heart stutters. The auction. Of course they'd have all my details from when I sold my virginity to a stranger through a computer screen.
"Standard protocol," he continues smoothly. "No phones or recording devices allowed past this point. You may secure your personal items in our private lockers or surrender them to security here."
"We'll use the lockers," Harper decides without hesitation, leading me through a discreet door into what can only be described as the most luxurious anteroom I've ever seen. Rows of sleek black security boxes line the walls, each one operated by biometric scanning.
After stashing our purses, we're led deeper into Obsidian proper, and I have to bite back a gasp at what unfolds before us.
The club is like stepping into another universe—all black marble and gleaming obsidian surfaces that catch the subtle red lighting and throw it back in sinister, beautiful patterns.
The main space opens into a vast cathedral of hedonism, with multiple levels connected by floating staircases, a central bar that looks carved from a single piece of volcanic glass, and dozens of secluded alcoves where elegantly dressed people conduct conversations in hushed, intimate tones.
"This is..." I trail off, my artistic mind struggling to process the sheer opulence, the carefully cultivated atmosphere of danger and desire that permeates every surface.
"Amazing, right?" Harper grins, completely in her element as she guides me toward the obsidian bar. "I told you it was something special."
The bartender—a striking woman with silver hair and wearing a fitted black uniform approaches us with the kind of smile that's perfectly professional yet somehow predatory.
"What can I get you two to drink?" She asks.
"Whiskey please," Harper replies, then glances at me. "And sparkling water for my friend."
While we wait for our drinks, I try not to stare too obviously at the other patrons.
They're all beautiful, all wealthy if their clothes are any indication, all carrying themselves with the kind of confidence that comes from knowing they can afford anything they want.
Including the services offered in a place like this.
"I need to go get ready," Harper says after finishing half her drink. "The viewing lounge for my performance space is through that archway over there." She points to an elegant entrance across the main floor. "But don't feel like you have to stay for the entire show. I know it might be weird."
"I'll watch your introduction at least," I promise, knowing how much it means to her to have a friendly face in the audience when she starts. "Break a leg, Harp."
She squeezes my hand affectionately before disappearing into the crowd, leaving me alone in this temple of controlled debauchery.
The viewing lounge Harper directed me to is even more luxurious than the main club—plush leather seating arranged theater-style, facing an enormous glass wall that looks into what appears to be a performance space.
The room beyond the glass is designed with tasteful minimalism—black satin sheets on a massive circular bed, strategically placed lighting that creates pools of amber warmth against dark walls, and a collection of elegant props arranged with artistic precision.
I settle into one of the middle seats just as Harper enters her performance space, now wearing a silky black robe that skims her curves. Her hair cascades around her shoulders in those perfect waves, and she moves with the confidence of someone who was born to be watched.
The way she commands the space is captivating—part seduction, part performance art. Her confidence is magnetic, drawing every eye in the room as she moves with grace.
The viewing lounge gradually fills with wealthy patrons, both men and women settling into the plush seats with crystal glasses in hand. The air feels charged with anticipation, everyone leaning slightly forward in their seats as Harper reaches for the sash of her robe.
She lets it fall open, revealing a black lace lingerie set beneath. The material is sheer enough to tantalize without revealing everything at once—a masterclass in building desire. Her movements are choreographed yet seem effortless, each gesture flowing into the next with hypnotic rhythm.
As she begins to remove the lingerie piece by piece, I realize I can't stay for this part. Watching my best friend perform is one thing, but seeing her completely exposed feels like a violation of our friendship, no matter how comfortable she is with it.
Just as I'm about to slip out, Harper selects a sleek glass toy from an artfully arranged collection. That's definitely my cue to leave. I stand quietly, trying not to draw attention to myself as I edge toward the exit.
But as I reach for the door handle, I freeze.
In the back corner of the viewing lounge, partially hidden in shadow, sits a familiar figure with dirty blond hair and ice-blue eyes.
Logan, Dom's friend, is watching Harper with undisguised appreciation and something that looks dangerously like genuine interest.
The intensity of his focus is unsettling—he's completely absorbed, leaning forward slightly with his elbows resting on his knees, those piercing eyes never leaving Harper's form.
Unlike the casual appreciation of the other viewers, there's something deeply personal in his gaze, as though he's memorizing every inch of her.
He's so entranced that he doesn't notice me at all, which allows me to slip out of the room with my heart hammering against my ribs. This complication is the absolute last thing any of us needs.
Once outside the viewing lounge, I press my back against the cool wall, trying to steady my breathing. Logan—Dom's best friend—watching Harper like a starving man at a feast. The implications make my head spin as I push away from the wall and move deeper into the club.
The main space pulses with subdued energy—beautiful people engaged in beautiful conversations, their perfect bodies draped in designer clothes and subtle power. I feel out of place despite my borrowed confidence, like an imposter wearing someone else's life.
I make my way to the obsidian bar, grateful for the momentary sanctuary it offers. The bartender—different from earlier, a man with cheekbones sharp enough to cut glass—appears before me with silent efficiency.
"Sparkling water, please," I request, my voice steadier than I feel.
While he prepares my drink, I scan the club, taking in the artful arrangement of spaces designed for observation and interaction. Every corner offers either privacy or exhibition, depending on what patrons seek. The architecture itself feels alive with possibility, with danger, with secrets.
My water arrives in a crystal glass, bubbles dancing like tiny stars against the black bar top.
As I take a sip, I can't help thinking about Dom's reaction if he knew I was here—in this place where his best friend is watching his daughter perform.
Where wealthy strangers pay thousands for exclusive experiences.
Where I once offered my virginity to the highest bidder, never imagining it would be the beginning of something so complicated.
I decide to explore the rest of Obsidian while Harper finishes her show, needing distance from both the viewing lounge and my spiraling thoughts.
The night stretches ahead, full of possibilities and pitfalls in equal measure, as I venture deeper into this temple of controlled desire with my borrowed confidence and racing heart.
