Chapter 1 - The Good Wife

Morning light spilled through the tall bedroom windows of the Whitlock home, soft and golden, touching everything gently.

Athena was already awake.

She always was before James.

She lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling, listening to the quiet rhythm of his breathing beside her. His arm was thrown over her waist possessively, even in sleep. Heavy. Claiming.

She liked that.

Or at least, she told herself she did.

Carefully, she slipped from under his arm and padded across the cold hardwood floors. Her movements were silent, practiced. She knew which boards creaked. She knew how to move through this house without making a sound.

A good wife didn't wake her husband.

A good wife had coffee ready.

A good wife didn't complain.

She tied her dark hair into a loose knot and moved to the kitchen. The marble counters gleamed. Everything in this house gleamed. James liked it spotless. Perfect.

She started the coffee machine and stared out the window at the long stretch of trees lining the property.

Her chest tightened.

For no reason at all.

That happened sometimes.

Like something inside her was restless.

Like something was waiting.

She rubbed at her sternum absentmindedly.

Last night she'd dreamed of wolves again.

Not normal wolves.

Massive ones. Silver eyes. Running through snow. A castle in the distance. Fire. Screaming. Magic in the air like lightning.

She always woke from those dreams with her heart racing and a strange ache between her ribs.

Her parents used to tell her it was just an overactive imagination.

Her adoptive parents.

She didn't remember anything before the orphanage.

Nothing.

Not a face. Not a voice. Not a memory.

Just darkness.

And the strange feeling that she had forgotten something important.

Very important.

She poured James's coffee into his favorite mug before he even called for her.

Right on time.

"Athena!"

She flinched slightly.

"I'm here!" she called sweetly, walking toward the stairs with the mug.

He stood at the top in pajama pants, running a hand through his messy brown hair. He looked handsome in the careless way he always did. Privileged. Untouched by life.

His green-blue eyes softened when they landed on her.

"There's my perfect girl."

Her heart fluttered at the praise.

She handed him the mug. He kissed her forehead absentmindedly and walked back into the bedroom without another word.

She followed.

Because that's what she did.

She followed.

James sat on the edge of the bed, sipping his coffee while checking his phone. His jaw tightened slightly at whatever he was reading.

Athena noticed.

She always noticed.

"Is everything okay?" she asked gently.

He looked up, forcing a smile. "Yeah. Just business stuff. Don't worry that pretty head of yours."

She nodded immediately.

"Okay."

He liked when she didn't press.

He liked when she obeyed.

He set the mug down and pulled her between his knees suddenly. She gasped softly as his hands graced her hips.

"You're too good for me, you know that?" he murmured.

She smiled. "I'm exactly what you need."

And she believed it.

Because if she wasn't what he needed...

Then what was she?

He kissed her slowly, possessively, like he was reminding himself she belonged to him.

Like he was trying to forget something.

When he pulled away, his eyes lingered on her face for a moment too long.

Almost like guilt.

But she didn't recognize it.

She never would.

Not yet.

Outside, deep in the forest lining the Whitlock property, something moved between the trees.

Watching the house.

Watching her.

Waiting.

Athena shivered suddenly.

James didn't notice.

And far away, in a stone throne room carved into a mountainside, a dark-haired king felt a strange, sudden pull in his chest for the first time in his life.

He frowned.

Annoyed.

Unsettled.

He had no idea that the reason for it was standing in a kitchen miles away, wiping down counters that were already clean.

And that she belonged to him.
