Chapter 17 - The Morning After

Athena woke slowly.

For a moment, she didn't know where she was.

The ceiling above her was stone, not the soft white plaster she was used to. The air smelled faintly of smoke and something earthy she couldn't place. The blankets were heavier. Warmer.

Then it came back to her in pieces.

The car.

The fortress.

The man with silver in his eyes.

Her chest tightened.

She sat up quickly in the bed, heart beginning to race-

And then paused.

Because something felt... different.

She didn't feel groggy.

She didn't feel panicked.

She felt rested.

Clear.

Like she had slept more deeply than she ever had in her life.

Athena swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood carefully.

Her feet touched the fur rug and she froze.

She could hear things.

Not loudly.

But clearly.

The faint crackle of torches somewhere down the hall.

Footsteps far away.

The whisper of fabric brushing stone.

Her breath caught.

"How can I hear that..." she murmured.

She walked slowly to the door and opened it.

The hallway stretched long and dimly lit in both directions.

No guards.

No locks.

She stepped out.

No one stopped her.

The stone beneath her bare feet was cool, but it didn't bother her like she expected.

She moved quietly down the corridor, curiosity pushing her forward more than fear.

The fortress felt different in the daylight.

Less threatening.

More... alive.

She turned a corner and nearly collided with something solid.

Athena gasped and stumbled back.

A massive man stood in front of her.

Shaved head. Broad shoulders. Scars across his arms. Eyes dark and sharp.

She recognized him immediately.

He had been one of the men who took her.

Her heart leapt into her throat.

"I-I'm sorry," she stammered.

The man blinked, clearly surprised by her reaction.

"You should not be wandering alone," he said.

His voice was deep, rough, but not cruel.

"I wasn't trying to go anywhere," she said quickly. "I just... needed air."

He studied her face for a long moment.

Then nodded once.

"This way."

She hesitated.

"Where?"

"Outside."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"Outside?"

He turned without waiting to see if she followed.

And she did.

They walked through another set of doors that opened into a stone courtyard carved into the mountain itself. Morning light poured down from above, illuminating the space with soft gray-blue light.

Athena stepped into it and inhaled deeply.

The air was crisp. Clean. Fresh.

Her lungs filled in a way they never had before.

She didn't realize she had closed her eyes until she heard the man speak again.

"You are not afraid," he said.

She opened her eyes and looked at him.

"I think I should be."

He nodded slightly, like he respected the answer.

They stood in silence for a moment.

Then she asked quietly, "What is this place?"

He looked at her carefully before answering.

"This is where you belong."
