Chapter 39 - The Sound of the Forest

The night air outside the fortress was colder than Athena expected.

Silas walked beside her in silence as they stepped beyond the stone walls and onto a narrow path leading toward the trees.

The forest stretched endlessly in front of them, dark and alive with quiet movement.

Athena inhaled deeply.

The air smelled different here.

Cleaner.

Full.

They stopped just at the edge of the tree line.

"Listen," Silas said softly.

She did.

At first, she heard nothing.

Then slowly...

Leaves shifting.

Branches creaking.

Something moving far off in the distance.

Her breathing slowed without her realizing it.

Her shoulders relaxed.

Her chest felt lighter.

"I feel..." she hesitated. "Calm."

Silas watched her carefully.

"That is your nature responding to this place."

She frowned slightly.

"I don't feel like you do."

He tilted his head. "What do you mean?"

"I don't feel anything inside me," she admitted quietly. "No change. No instinct like you described."

Her voice grew softer.

"What if there's nothing there?"

Silas's expression shifted slightly.

"There are those among us," he said carefully, "who are born without a wolf. My aunt is one of them."

Athena looked up at him.

"Really?"

He nodded once.

"She is still family. Still respected."

Athena swallowed.

"But what if I'm like that?" she asked. "What if I don't have what you have?"

Her voice cracked just enough for him to hear it.

"I wouldn't even know if something was missing because I don't remember what I'm supposed to feel."

Silas stepped closer.

"You are not here by accident," he said firmly.

"But what if your people expect me to be something I'm not?" she whispered. "I've spent my whole life trying to be enough for people. I don't want to find out I'm... less here too."

Silas's jaw tightened.

"They will not think that."

She shook her head slightly.

"You don't know that."

Athena turned back toward the forest, staring into the darkness.

Feeling something she couldn't name.

"I feel like I've been here before," she whispered.
