Chapter 35
The phone rang when Tara was pulling off her gardening boots at the back door.
Amanda Holt. Logan Quick’s ex-wife.
‘Tara Webb,’ she answered, conscious of her heart starting to beat uncomfortably fast.
‘Oh, yes, hello. I got a message you called yesterday. Something about a drinks party?’
‘We met last Christmas.’ Tara walked through the house to where she’d left the solicitors’ letter on the dining table. ‘At Miranda Overbright’s house.’
‘So, what can I do for you?’ The woman’s voice sounded cold, disinterested.
‘Probably nothing, and I apologise for troubling you. But I had a letter this week, supposedly from your ex-husband’s solicitors.
It said that I would receive a share of his wealth when he dies.
’ She’d reached the table. ‘An obvious scam, but I thought that you, and he, should know someone is doing this.’
Silence.
‘I’ve since heard of another woman who received the same letter. And of course, it’s been on the local news, so you probably know all about it already.’
‘I don’t listen to the news. What exactly does this letter say?’
Tara read the letter aloud.
‘Again. Read it again, please.’
Tara obliged.
‘I will fucking kill him.’
‘Are you saying—’
She got no further. The line had gone dead.
Tara glanced at her watch. Almost half past four. The solicitors’ office would still be open. She dialled the number of Barker, Momen and Dodds.
