Chapter 14 Breaking Instincts #2

Ethan stepped closer until only a small distance separated them.

“I’m not leaving you.”

“Listen to me.”

“No.”

For the first time since they had met, Ethan interrupted Damien without hesitation.

“I’m done watching you carry everything alone.”

Damien opened his mouth to argue.

Ethan gently caught his hand.

“You spent ten years believing your only purpose was to sacrifice yourself.”

“That isn’t true anymore.”

The words landed with quiet force.

Nathan watched the exchange silently.

He had served beside Damien during the war.

He knew exactly how often the Alpha had volunteered for impossible missions so others could return home.

Ethan continued speaking.

“You taught me something.”

Damien frowned slightly.

“What?”

“Trust.”

“You trusted me with your memories.”

“Your fears.”

“Your future.”

His fingers tightened gently around Damien’s hand.

“So trust me now.”

“We leave together.”

“Or we don’t leave at all.”

For several long seconds, Damien simply looked at him.

Every instinct shaped by years of military service urged him to stay behind.

Protect the others.

Complete the mission.

Accept whatever happened afterward.

Then another voice, quieter but stronger than any instinct, reminded him of something Ethan had once said.

Love begins with choice.

Slowly, Damien nodded.

“Together.”

Ethan smiled.

“Together.”

Nathan pointed toward the ladder.

“Move.”

One by one they climbed upward through the narrow shaft.

Below them, security officers reached the maintenance corridor.

Flashlights swept across the darkness.

Someone shouted.

“They’re above us!”

The climb became faster.

Metal echoed beneath their hands.

The hatch at the top finally came into view.

One of the former operatives forced it open, revealing cool night air and the sound of wind moving through tall pine trees.

Nathan climbed out first, scanning the forest.

“Clear.”

Everyone emerged moments later.

Behind them, alarms continued screaming from somewhere beneath the earth.

The hidden research facility disappeared among the trees as they hurried toward waiting vehicles concealed beneath camouflage nets.

Only after the engines started did Ethan finally allow himself to breathe deeply.

He looked through the rear window.

The facility grew smaller until it vanished completely.

“It’s over,” Nathan said quietly.

Damien shook his head.

“No.”

“They’ll still come after us.”

“They might.”

Nathan smiled faintly.

“But now we know where to find them too.”

The drive back to Wolfe Manor passed mostly in silence.

Exhaustion settled over everyone.

Hours of fear, adrenaline, and unanswered questions had left them emotionally drained.

When they finally arrived, Claire was already waiting near the entrance.

The moment Ethan stepped from the vehicle, she crossed the distance between them and wrapped him in a brief, relieved embrace.

“You had us terrified.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You don’t apologize for surviving.”

She smiled through obvious emotion before stepping back.

“I’m just glad you’re home.”

Later that evening, after doctors confirmed Ethan was physically unharmed and the rest of the team finally departed to rest, the manor grew quiet once again.

Damien stood alone on the balcony overlooking the gardens.

The cool night breeze carried the scent of rain and blooming jasmine.

He barely noticed.

Ethan quietly joined him.

Neither spoke immediately.

The silence felt comforting rather than empty.

After a long while, Ethan rested his arms against the balcony railing.

“You almost stayed behind.”

Damien didn’t deny it.

“I did.”

“I know why.”

“I couldn’t lose you.”

Ethan turned toward him.

“You would have.”

Damien looked away.

“I’ve spent most of my life believing protecting people meant giving up pieces of myself.”

“And now?”

“Now I think protecting someone also means letting them stand beside you.”

A gentle smile appeared on Ethan’s face.

“I’ve been hoping you’d figure that out.”

Damien laughed softly.

“I had a good teacher.”

For a moment they simply looked at one another.

There were no reporters.

No conspiracies.

No laboratories.

Only two men who had survived something neither of them had expected.

Damien reached out slowly, giving Ethan every opportunity to step away if he wished.

Instead, Ethan closed the remaining distance himself.

Their embrace was quiet and unhurried.

No urgency drove it.

No biological impulse demanded more.

It was simply the comfort of finally knowing the other was safe.

After several moments, Damien rested his forehead lightly against Ethan’s.

“I thought I was going to lose you.”

“You didn’t.”

“I don’t know what I would have done.”

Ethan smiled gently.

“You’ll never have to find out.”

They remained together beneath the quiet night sky, speaking about childhood memories, hopes they had nearly abandoned, and the future they wanted to build after exposing the truth behind Project Aegis.

When Damien finally kissed Ethan, it was slow and tender, filled with gratitude rather than desperation.

It wasn’t a surrender to instinct.

It wasn’t the completion of some predetermined biological destiny.

It was a promise.

A choice freely made by two people who had learned that the strongest bond wasn’t created in a laboratory or dictated by genetics.

It was built through trust, courage, forgiveness, and love.

And for the first time since Damien Wolfe’s life had been stolen from him years earlier, tomorrow no longer felt like something to survive.

It felt like something worth living for—together.
