The moon disappeared behind a cloud as I padded silently across campus. A bunny hopped across the lawn near the admin building and froze in terror when it caught my scent.
My wolf sniffed, offended that such a small creature would fear us. Unlike some of the disgusting cretins on campus, I didn’t torment those smaller and weaker than me. My motto was live and let live.
Make love, not war.
I loved to fuck. Or I did before I crossed paths with a small, hybrid wolf shifter.
The damn male had ruined me for all others. Infected my blood and made it impossible for my cock to get hard for any other creature, male or female.
Honestly, it was beyond frustrating. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d had an orgasm that didn’t involve my fucking hand.
Just this evening, a cute little jaguar shifter had waylaid me at the bar. She was just my type: smoky doe eyes, big tits, and an ass I could sink my teeth into. But the moment she slid her fingers under my tee, my wolf reacted with fury, and I nearly bit her fucking head off.
The female had run away terrified, which made me feel awful. I hated scaring females. Being an asshole to others wasn’t in my nature; that was Tate’s job. And he performed his role with aplomb most days.
Ignoring the frozen bunny that may or may not have died from a heart attack, I moved silently onward toward the other dorms. The faintest trace of burned sugar scent told me I was on the right path, and my wolf paced restlessly in my chest, eager to see our mate.
I’d nearly passed out from shock earlier when the little wolf kissed me. It was usually me in the driver’s seat, not the other way around.
My brow furrowed as I remembered how it felt to have the little wolf pressed against me. How soft his skin was, and how I’d wanted to kiss every inch of his delectable body.
Although…I still couldn’t figure out why the way he looked didn’t match the shape and feel of his body when I touched him. Something didn’t add up, and I was determined to solve the mystery.
I honestly didn’t care whether he was male or female. I’d love and care for my mate no matter what. Gender made no different. If the goddess had seen fit to gift me a mate, I would accept that gift with open arms.
Yes, I remained pissed my mate had junk-punched me and run away, but that ended tonight. No more running from fate.
Tate might not like it, but he could get fucked.
Fate overruled Tate Montes, no matter what he thought.
And as for my mate being a hybrid, and therefore less than in the eyes of the Shifter Council, well, they could go fuck themselves too.
I reached the corner of dorm five and sniffed. A waft of burned sugar drifted down from an upper window, sending my wolf into a frenzy. He wanted to storm upstairs and claim our mate, but I pushed him back into his cage.
Now wasn’t the time.
Our little mate was safe, which had been my concern after he ran off earlier.
Not tonight, I told my wolf. As much as he wanted to pin our mate down and claim him, it was too soon. The little wolf was flighty as hell, and if we tried to force the issue, he’d run away again.
So for now, we’d play the long game and wait for him to come back to us.
Tonight had shown us he reciprocated our interest, even if he refused to admit it.
I shifted into my beast, howled mournfully a few times, and then settled down at the base of a tree beneath the little wolf’s bedroom window. The chill in the air promised further snow, but my wolf didn’t care. His thick pelt protected him from the cold, and a bit of snow wouldn’t hurt.
No matter how long it took, we’d wait for our mate to accept our claim. And if anyone tried hurting him, we’d kill them.
