Chapter 17

The rehearsal required all of them to remain fully clothed.

Before entering, each completed a private capacity check.

June named the gallery issue as active stress and stated that it did not impair her.

Malcolm reported an ordinary workday and his knee.

Elliot disclosed poor sleep the previous night but no fatigue affecting judgment.

Mira asked him to stand, walk the exit route, and decide whether tiredness made the role feel harder.

"Harder, not unsafe," he said. "I still choose the rehearsal."

June was not allowed to hear the details until Elliot approved them. He approved the simple fact that sleep had been reviewed, nothing more. The process reminded her that transparency did not mean unrestricted access to another person.

In her own preparation room, June changed from gallery shoes into lower heels and then changed back.

The decision was not about appearance. She wanted to know whether footwear affected her ability to use the open-palm signal and leave without assistance.

She tested both, selected the lower pair, and documented the choice.

Desire built through these ordinary acts of capacity. No one was being swept away. Every adult kept arriving.

June had assumed that would make it easier.

Instead clothing became a record of every movement denied.

Malcolm's dark shirt pulled across his shoulders when he turned.

Elliot's fingers closed around the brass ring.

June's own jacket lay open over a soft violet blouse, and each breath shifted the fabric in ways she became certain both men could see.

Mira stood by the main door. Tessa had completed the technology sweep and left the room. No device remained inside. The clock on the wall was mechanical, its second hand silent.

"This rehearsal tests language, sightlines, movement, and signals," Mira said. "It is not a private scene. No intimate contact. Any person may stop. I will interrupt if a transition is inferred."

June looked at Malcolm, then Elliot. "I want to begin."

"Yes," Malcolm said.

"Yes," Elliot said.

"Yes," June answered.

She walked to the bench. Malcolm remained six feet away until she said, "Come closer. Stop at arm's length."

He did.

The floor carried his weight without sound. June was aware of him as a living wall of heat, a shape large enough to fill her forward vision. She could see Elliot past Malcolm's left shoulder. He sat in the lit chair with the brass ring resting in both hands.

"Can you see my face?" she asked Elliot.

"Yes."

Mira said, "Safety question permitted. Continue."

June returned her attention to Malcolm. "Lift your right hand to my shoulder. Do not touch."

His hand rose. The space between his palm and her blouse became unbearable.

"Distance?" he asked.

"Two inches."

He adjusted. June felt no contact and still registered the shape of his hand across her skin. In the mirror, she saw herself between the two men: Malcolm close, Elliot seated behind the line, no one hidden.

The composition was almost what she had imagined.

Almost was more dangerous than wrong.

"Hold," she said.

Malcolm lowered his hand at once. Elliot straightened but did not rise. Mira waited.

"Reason?" June asked herself aloud. Her pulse had quickened.

"You do not owe a reason to make the pause valid," Mira said.

"I know. I want one."

June looked at Elliot. "Your position is changing what Malcolm's hand feels like even without contact."

"Do you want me to leave?" Elliot asked.

"No."

"Do you want me to look elsewhere?"

She pictured his gaze moving away and felt immediate refusal. "No."

Malcolm waited until June faced him. "Do you want my hand back where it was?"

"Yes."

"Present yes?"

"Yes."

He raised it again, stopping two inches away.

"Continue," June said.

The word released a tension none of them pretended was procedural.

They practiced approach and retreat. Malcolm moved to June's side when invited.

June sat while he remained standing, then asked him to kneel so their eyes were level.

That request affected him; she saw it in the brief tightening of his mouth.

He answered yes and lowered himself with controlled ease.

Elliot's gaze remained visible in the mirror.

"What do you see?" June asked him.

He looked at Mira. "Am I invited to answer beyond safety?"

June said, "Yes. For rehearsal."

"I see you watching whether Malcolm resents kneeling," Elliot said. "I see Malcolm waiting for you to notice that he doesn't."

June's breath caught.

Malcolm did not turn. "Accurate."

"And you?" June asked Elliot. "What do I see?"

"You tell me."

She studied him. He held the ring loosely, but his knuckles had paled. His posture remained relaxed by visible effort. Desire lived in the restraint rather than behind it.

"You want to speak without being asked," she said.

"Yes."

The answer arrived at once.

Mira intervened. "Does the rehearsal change the first-scene silence term?"

June felt both men waiting.

"No," she said. "But the closed-fist request remains. If Elliot needs to ask, we will stop and ask."

"Do you accept that?" Mira asked Elliot.

He looked at June, not at Mira. "Yes."

They rehearsed the ring. June pointed and said, "Outside."

Elliot stood, placed the brass on the table, and left through the side door. The moment was efficient and devastating. His absence entered the room more forcefully than his presence had.

June stared at the empty chair.

"What changed?" Malcolm asked.

"The room lost depth."

"It lost Elliot," he said.

The correction irritated her because it was true.

Mira brought Elliot back only after June independently requested continuation and Elliot independently agreed to return.

They repeated his self-directed exit. This time Elliot set down the ring without being told and left.

June experienced the same sharp loss without the illusion that she had caused it.

When he returned, she asked, "How did it feel to leave?"

"Like using a right I hope I do not need."

"And returning?"

"Like a new choice."

They practiced the open-palm stop. Malcolm raised his hand. June and Elliot stopped speaking and moving. Elliot raised his. Malcolm stepped back from June before anyone asked. June raised hers last and watched both men respond to a gesture too quiet to dominate the room.

Then Mira moved them into the proposed shared quiet.

The intimate program had not occurred, yet they sat in the Still Room as if after something.

No one was assigned a position. Malcolm chose the end of a long sofa.

Elliot chose an armchair facing neither of them directly. June stood between the options.

The uncertainty was instructive.

"Where do you want to be?" Malcolm asked.

June sat in the middle of the sofa, leaving space on both sides. Malcolm did not close the distance without an invitation. Elliot remained in the chair.

"Do you prefer separate space?" she asked him.

"Right now, yes. After a real scene, I won't know until then."

"Will you tell me?"

"If I am allowed ordinary speech after the program, I will not wait to be interviewed."

Mira ended the rehearsal and collected separate requests in three rooms.

June stood alone before Nell and considered the honest result. Nothing sexual had occurred. Malcolm's hand had not touched her shoulder. Elliot had not crossed a line. Still, the room had revealed more than a simpler encounter might have concealed.

"I request the threshold meeting," June said.

"With both men?"

"Yes. Under the map as revised."

An hour later, the confirmation arrived.

Three independent requests.

June read the message in the back of her car. In the window, her face was reflected over the city, but she did not look alone anymore. Malcolm's suspended hand and Elliot's emptied chair remained with her.

She had designed a fantasy around one man acting and one man watching.

The rehearsal had made inaction feel like a form of presence.
