Chapter 18
Calder's mask made his mouth more visible, not less.
Imani had noticed before. Tonight, alone with him in the Nocturne Suite's sitting room, the knowledge behaved differently.
The room was warm ivory and dark wood, with no mirrors uncovered and every exit visible.
Her phone remained sealed outside. Their health and barrier choices had been reconfirmed.
The program allowed kissing, mutual touch above and below clothing, and the possibility of more only through new words.
Calder stood close enough that she could smell clean soap and something mineral that belonged to his work.
"May I touch your forearm?" she asked.
"Yes."
Her fingers followed the tattooed line from wrist to elbow. She did not ask what the design meant. She felt muscle shift beneath warm skin.
"Shoulders?"
"Yes."
He wore a black shirt with the sleeves rolled and the top buttons open. Imani placed both hands on his shoulders, feeling his weight without being asked to carry it.
"Your mouth," she said.
"That is not a question."
"May I kiss you?"
"Yes."
The kiss began controlled and became hungry without becoming vague. Calder asked before sliding his hand along her thigh. She said yes and moved closer, the skirt of her dress riding beneath his palm.
"Higher?" he asked.
"Yes. Slowly."
His fingers moved beneath the hem, then stopped where the condition ended. Imani's breath broke against his mouth.
"More contact," she said. "Over my underwear."
"Yes?"
"Yes."
Calder touched her through silk with broad, patient pressure. Pleasure rose fast enough to make language feel inconvenient. That was precisely when she needed it.
"Circles," she said. "Slower."
He followed, watching her face without treating it as permission beyond the words she gave him.
Imani opened his shirt. She asked to touch his chest, then his stomach, then the hard line of him through his trousers. Each answer arrived separately. When her palm closed over him, Calder bowed his head, masked brow near hers.
"Pressure's good," he said. "Keep that."
She did.
His mouth moved to her neck. No teeth until he asked. No mark after she declined one. The specificity made desire expand rather than fracture.
Imani's other hand traveled upward. Her fingertips reached the ribbon along the back edge of his mask.
Calder caught her wrist.
Not hard. Immediate.
"Hold," he said.
Every part of her stopped.
She opened her hand and let him move it away. "What needs attention?"
"You reached the fastening."
"I wasn't going to lift it."
"I know. I want the boundary felt before we are both too far inside this."
Heat and embarrassment collided in her chest. The old instinct rose: explain intent, prove goodness, repair his perception.
Imani released it.
"Only you remove it," she said. "My hand does not go to the ribbon. Thank you for stopping me."
Calder searched her uncovered face. "Do you want to continue?"
"Yes. Do you?"
"Yes. With your hands below my shoulders unless I invite something else."
"Agreed."
They drank water. She sat on the edge of the bed while her pulse settled, and he remained within reach without touching until she asked him to come closer.
When they resumed, the interruption did not become punishment. Calder knelt between her knees after she invited him. He removed her underwear only after a separate yes and touched her with his fingers where silk had been, watching the change in her breathing.
"More pressure," she said.
He gave it.
"Stay there."
He stayed until pleasure gathered so sharply that she gripped his bare forearm and said his name without a question attached. Her orgasm moved through her in waves, not an answer but a release from needing one.
Afterward, she asked how he wanted to be touched.
Calder guided her hand back to him, still over fabric at first, then accepted her request to open his trousers.
She learned his response through the tension in his thighs and the blunt words he gave when he wanted more.
She brought him to the edge with her hand, slowed when he asked, and continued only after his yes.
He came with his forehead against her shoulder, mask secure, breath rough at her ear.
They lay side by side later, not touching until Calder reached palm-up between them.
Imani placed her hand in his.
"If my face changes your response," he said, "will you tell me instead of performing goodness?"
She wanted to promise it would not. That would have been a lie about a future neither of them could know.
"I will tell you the truth without making you manage it," she said. "I cannot promise the preferred answer."
His fingers closed around hers. "That's the answer I wanted."
They remained in the suite until the scheduled quiet hour ended.
Calder did not remove the mask to cool his skin because the pair meeting had not included that permission.
Instead, he used the retreat room alone while Imani dressed in the main space.
The separation prevented an accidental reveal without making his need for comfort suspicious.
When he returned, Imani sat with two cups of tea.
"May I ask a nonidentifying question?" she said.
"You may ask anything. I may not answer."
"What makes you feel ordinary?"
Calder lowered himself into the chair. "Bills. Losing one sock. Students who ignore instructions and blame the material."
"You teach?"
He noticed the professional inference activate behind her eyes.
"That detail went farther than I intended."
Imani set down her cup. "Hold. Do you want the statement withdrawn from my permitted knowledge? I can't forget it, but I can agree not to use or test it."
"Yes. Broad work field only."
"Agreed. I will not search, infer location, or ask follow-ups based on teaching."
Calder's shoulders lowered. He did not repeat the detail or ask her to prove she would ignore it.
"What makes you feel ordinary?" he asked.
"My sister correcting my grammar in text messages. Grocery shopping when someone else's cart blocks the aisle. A Sunday when nobody wants my opinion."
"Does that Sunday exist?"
"Not yet."
They laughed.
During her separate safety check, Imani reported the accidental detail and the agreed limit. Tessa noted the permission without asking what the teaching involved.
Walking home, Imani felt the weight of a promise tested by a smaller revelation. Calder had offered a fact he had not meant to offer. She could not make the mistake disappear. She could keep it from expanding.
The following week, Imani received the fired thumbprint piece in the Still Room. Calder placed the wrapped box between them and asked whether she still wanted it.
"Yes. No public meaning, no photograph, no obligation to keep it forever."
"Agreed."
She opened the paper. Her thumbprint held emerald in its center. The object was small enough to close inside her fist.
"May I ask how you chose the glaze?"
Calder paused before answering. "I chose colors already approved for our program. The firing did what it did."
"I love it."
"You can say that without making it a symbol."
"I love the object. I love that you made it. I am not assigning a lesson."
The tension at the corner of his mouth eased.
They used the rest of the daylight meeting to discuss a shared program.
Calder wanted no face request during arousal and no assumption that increased heat expanded mask access.
Imani wanted the possibility of intercourse but accepted that every act remained conditional.
The request would go to Arun separately.
At home, Imani placed the piece on her mantel far from the recorder. She had not been given the studio's name, the teaching subject, or Calder's face. The object did not become evidence from which she could reverse-engineer any of them.
She drafted no caption, private or public. She only turned the piece once beneath the lamp and let herself enjoy what had been freely given.
