Chapter 21
Hugo arrived for the second private meeting with no food.
Marisol noticed as soon as she entered the salon.
The sideboard held only water and tea. The low table had been moved to create open space near the daybed. Lamps burned warm against walls the color of dark honey. Hugo stood in shirtsleeves beside the covered window, his jacket folded across a chair, his tie loosened but still knotted.
"You expected provisions," he said.
"I expected you. The provisions had become part of the expectation."
"Then they needed to stay home."
He had eaten before arriving. So had she.
Each had separately confirmed sobriety, current health disclosures, and the continuing barrier agreement.
Hugo's vasectomy did not change infection precautions or Marisol's right to decide what happened inside her body.
Their personal testing dates were current and visible through the portal.
No alcohol would enter the room. Both had private cars on call.
The threshold conversation had been specific without pretending specificity guaranteed an outcome.
Kissing, touching beneath clothing, and oral intimacy were possible.
Penetration was not approved for this meeting.
Hugo had named condoms and nitrile barriers as available rather than assumed.
Marisol had named breasts, hips, thighs, stomach, and genitals as areas he might touch only after asking in the moment.
Hugo permitted the same categories on his body and made one request she had not expected: no compliment that disguised discomfort with his softness.
"If you like my body, like the body present," he had said. "Do not tell me I carry it well."
Now Marisol placed VK-088 on the table.
"What praise do you want?" she asked.
Hugo's brows rose. "We begin efficiently."
"You asked me to consider it."
He came nearer but stopped an arm's length away. "I want to know when you enjoy something. I want to hear what you notice about me that could not be said before we met. I do not want a performance review at the end."
"And if I have nothing to say?"
"Then do not decorate silence."
"What praise do you want to give?"
His gaze traveled over her without apology. Marisol wore a bronze silk blouse and trousers cut wide enough to move in. Her curls were pinned loosely at the nape, not hidden, not fully free.
"I want to tell you when you become less careful," Hugo said. "When you ask cleanly. When you take pleasure without making it a favor. I want to admire your body without turning it into proof that forty-five is generous."
Marisol felt heat gather low and immediate.
"That is a great deal of language before a kiss."
"You asked a man with opinions."
"I asked a grocer."
His expression sharpened with amusement. "Dangerous."
She stepped close enough to take the end of his tie.
"May I remove this?"
"Yes."
Marisol loosened the knot. Hugo watched her hands. She slid the silk from his collar and folded it over the jacket.
"Your competence with neckwear is concerning," he said.
"I have had a public career since adolescence. I could remove a Windsor knot during an earthquake."
"And yet you choose me."
"For the present meeting."
The precision made his smile deepen.
"May I kiss you?" she asked.
"Yes."
Marisol cupped his face and kissed him.
The memory of their first kiss had not prepared her for the privacy of this one.
No locked storefront, no camera beyond the sales floor, no car waiting outside the glass.
Hugo's hands settled at her waist over silk.
His mouth was warm and unhurried, his pleasure present in the low sound he gave when she opened to him.
She pulled his shirt free from his trousers.
Hugo broke the kiss only far enough to speak. "Do you want your hands under it?"
"Yes. May I?"
"Yes. Back and stomach."
Marisol slid her palms beneath cotton. His skin was hot. The soft curve of his abdomen met her first, then the solid width of his back. Hugo did not tighten his stomach or apologize with posture. He received her hands as if he trusted the truth of them.
"I like this," she said.
"Specificity remains available."
She laughed against his mouth. "I like the warmth of you. I like that I cannot reach around your waist. I like the way you wait without going absent."
Hugo kissed her harder.
His hand moved higher along her back and stopped at the fastening of her blouse. "May I open this?"
Marisol's pulse beat in her throat. "Yes. Leave the blouse on."
"Yes."
He undid the fastening, then waited. She took his hand and guided it beneath the silk to the bare skin at her waist.
"Here," she said.
"Here."
His palm traveled slowly over her side, the curve above her hip, the soft fullness she had spent decades allowing stylists to manage with foundation garments and strategic seams. Hugo's attention had no corrective quality. He touched as if her body were not an issue under discussion.
Marisol untucked the blouse herself. "You may touch my stomach."
"Thank you."
He did not say beautiful. He spread his hand over the center of her, thumb moving once beneath her ribs, and watched her face.
"What?" she whispered.
"You gave me the place you protect when photographers enter a room."
The observation made her want to close the blouse.
It also made her want him closer.
"Amber," she said.
Hugo stopped. His hand remained still only because she had not asked for distance.
"Talk, space, or stillness?"
"Stillness."
They breathed together. Marisol felt the weight of his palm and the absence of demand.
"I don't know whether I want to be understood that quickly," she said.
"Then I will not tell you what I think everything means."
"Can you stop noticing?"
"No. I can stop making the noticing your responsibility."
The answer moved through her more intimately than his hand.
"Open," she said.
Hugo bent to kiss her, but Marisol turned them and guided him backward until his knees met the daybed. He sat. She stood between his thighs, taller now, looking down at a man who did not disguise how much he wanted her.
"May I remove your shirt?"
"Yes."
She opened the buttons one by one. Hugo's chest was broad, lightly furred, softer at the lower edge. He kept his hands on his thighs until she said, "Touch my hips. Over the trousers."
His palms curved around her.
"More pressure."
He gave it.
Marisol pushed the shirt from his shoulders. "This is what I wanted to see."
"My excellent undershirt?"
She drew the white fabric upward. Hugo helped remove it, then let her look.
"Your body does not ask permission to take up space," she said.
His humor left his face. "That is praise I want."
Marisol touched his chest. Bent and kissed the center of it. Hugo's fingers tightened on her hips, then eased before pressure became assumption.
"May I take off your blouse?" he asked.
"Yes. Bra stays."
He stood and slid the silk from her shoulders. Marisol fought the reflex to hold in her stomach. Hugo saw the effort.
"Do you want the lamps changed?" he asked.
"No."
"Do you want to stay standing?"
"No. I want to sit on you."
His eyes darkened. "Yes."
She straddled his lap, the fabric of their trousers between them. Hugo's hands returned to her waist. The first slow movement of her hips brought unmistakable evidence of his desire against her.
Marisol froze.
Not fear. The sudden exposure of being the person who had caused it.
Hugo's hands opened. "Amber?"
"No." She looked into his face. "Tell me."
"I want you."
"More specifically."
His resonant voice lowered. "I want the woman who corrected herself in my office instead of defending the insult. I want the woman who touched my stomach as if softness were not a concession. I want your weight on me. I want your mouth. I want to hear when pleasure interrupts your manners."
Marisol rocked against him again.
The sound that left her was not elegant.
"There," Hugo said softly. "That."
She kissed him before praise could become unbearable. Their rhythm developed through fabric, slow and heated. Hugo never used his hands to force it. When Marisol found the angle she liked, he held her there only after she said, "Yes, keep me."
Pleasure gathered with humiliating ease. She buried her face near his throat.
"Do you want to continue this way?" he asked.
"No. I want your mouth on my breast."
Hugo went still. "Over or under the bra?"
"Under. May I take it off?"
"Yes."
Marisol rose enough to unfasten it. For one second she held the cups in place, her full breasts supported by her hands.
Hugo did not speak.
"You may look," she said.
"I am."
She let the bra fall.
Desire transformed his face without making her body a spectacle. He looked at the shape, weight, and dark nipples with direct hunger.
"May I touch both?" he asked.
"Yes. Hands first."
His palms lifted them, thumbs passing lightly across the nipples. Marisol inhaled sharply.
"Pressure?"
"More."
He gave more, still watching her. She placed her hand behind his head.
"Mouth. Left first."
Hugo bent.
The heat of his mouth pulled a cry from her. He took his time, tongue circling before drawing the nipple between his lips, his other hand maintaining the pressure she had requested. Marisol moved against him, no longer able to separate pleasure from the pleasure of directing it.
He changed sides only when she asked.
When her breathing became ragged, Hugo lifted his head. "Do you want release this way, or do you want something else?"
The question opened the next choice without urging it.
Marisol touched her own lower stomach. "I want your hand under my trousers."
"Over underwear or under?"
"Under. External touch only."
"Barrier?"
"Glove."
Hugo reached for the sealed packet on the side table, opened it where she could see, and drew on a nitrile glove. The practical motion made desire more real, not less.
"Guide me," he said.
Marisol opened her trousers and shifted on his lap. Hugo's hand entered only when she took his wrist and led it. He touched her through her underwear first, waiting.
"Under," she said.
His fingers found wet heat. His eyes closed for half a second.
"Marisol."
"Do not praise me for being wet."
His eyes opened, amused even now. "Then I will keep the revelation private."
She laughed, and the laugh broke into a moan when his fingers moved.
He listened with his whole hand. Pressure adjusted by her breath and words. Higher. Slower. Stay there. Not inside. Yes, exactly.
Marisol held his shoulder, then his face. The orgasm built without spectacle. It arrived in a series of tightening waves that made her grip his jaw and say his name against his mouth.
Hugo did not tell her she was perfect. He kept the exact rhythm until she said, "Enough," then stopped.
She remained on his lap, trembling.
"Do you want me to remove my hand?" he asked.
"Yes. Then hold me."
He disposed of the glove in the lidded bin, closed her trousers without fastening them, and wrapped both arms around her.
Marisol rested against his bare chest. For several minutes neither spoke.
"I want to touch you," she said eventually.
Hugo kissed her hair. "You do not owe reciprocity on a timer."
"I know. I want to."
They negotiated again. She touched him over trousers first, then beneath, using a fresh barrier when he requested it.
His pleasure was vocal but not theatrical, his instructions clear.
Marisol learned that he liked her hand firm and her gaze on his face.
She brought him to release without penetration, and the vulnerability of his expression moved her more than the proof of her skill.
Afterward, Hugo removed the barrier and handled cleanup without turning it into service theater. They dressed partially, drank water, and lay side by side on top of the coverlet.
"Any regret?" he asked.
"No. Fear."
"About me?"
"About how easy it was to receive you."
Hugo turned his head. "Receiving me is not a contract for forever."
"I know."
"And choosing me tonight does not require you to subtract anything tomorrow."
Marisol closed her eyes.
That was the consequence she would carry out of the room: pleasure had not simplified her. It had made one bond more real without making any other possibility less true.
When the quiet-hour light came on, she did not rush to rebuild herself.
"Stay until the door changes," she said.
Hugo took her hand. "Gladly."
