Chapter 34
Jin knew he was empty before Audra asked him for comfort.
They had eaten lunch, reviewed travel messages, and spent an hour separately. At three, Audra found him in the common room and sat at the opposite end of the sofa.
“Do you have capacity for quiet touch?” she asked.
His body wanted hers in the abstract. His nervous system wanted a locked room, sleep, and no one’s skin.
“No,” he said.
Disappointment crossed her face before she managed it.
Jin did not compensate. He did not offer tea, a conversation, or later certainty.
“Thank you for answering,” Audra said.
“I’m going to my room. Empty means no contact and no messages until dinner unless safety changes.”
“Understood.”
He left her on the sofa.
In his private room, guilt tried to convert the refusal into selfishness. The weekend was ending. Audra had a work crisis. Roman and Luis had offered company. Jin’s role waited like a uniform folded on the bed.
He locked the door and slept for two hours.
When he woke, the house remained intact. A message in the group thread stated dinner at seven, attendance optional. No one had left food at his door. No one asked whether he was angry.
Capacity returned to six.
Jin showered and found Audra alone in the kitchen at six thirty. She was slicing bread because she wanted to. He stopped at the threshold.
“Do you still want contact?” he asked.
She put down the knife. “Yes. Do you?”
“Yes. I want you to hold me first.”
“Where?”
“My room. Ten minutes. Then we decide whether anything else follows.”
Audra accepted.
In his room, they sat against the headboard fully clothed. Jin turned into her arms. She held him with one palm at his back and one at his chest, not stroking or checking. He listened to her heartbeat without making it a metaphor for care.
“I was disappointed,” she said after several minutes.
“I know.”
“I did not stop wanting you.”
His eyes closed. “Thank you.”
“Not because you returned useful.”
“I know.”
At ten minutes, Jin lifted his head. He wanted a kiss. They negotiated and shared one slowly, then another. He asked Audra to touch his face and let desire remain tender without requiring a full erotic scene.
“Ninety days?” she asked when they separated.
“Yes with protected recovery blocks around work. No surprise visits after hard shifts. No praise for overriding capacity.”
“Accepted.”
Jin kissed her once more because the answer itself aroused him.
He had said empty before resentment.
The relationship had waited outside the locked door.
At dinner, Jin told Roman and Luis about the refusal without reporting Audra’s disappointment as private evidence.
“I said no to contact,” he said. “The group-relevant part is that the no stood. I returned later because capacity changed, not because anyone negotiated me back.”
Roman asked, “Do you want us to do anything differently?”
“Do not check on me through Audra when I withdraw. Message me directly once if the agreement calls for it. Accept silence after.”
Luis said, “I have a question that may be unfair. When you return after rest, how do we know the first no was complete rather than a delay?”
“Because I said no. Later yes does not revise it.”
Luis nodded. “That matters to me too. If I decline to make dinner and cook tomorrow, no one gets to say I secretly wanted persuasion.”
“Exactly.”
Roman looked at Jin. “I might worry that respecting space becomes emotional avoidance.”
“Then ask me when I have capacity. Do not make current access the price of proving I am not avoiding.”
Roman accepted.
The conversation lasted six minutes and developed direct language that did not require Audra in the room. She listened without becoming facilitator.
Later, Jin entered his recovery blocks on the temporary calendar. The first began immediately after his flight and extended through Wednesday morning. Audra’s instinct was to ask whether a brief Tuesday message remained welcome.
She waited for him to specify.
“No contact Tuesday morning,” he said. “One message after three is welcome. I may not answer.”
“I can do that.”
Jin felt wanted in the specificity, not managed by it.
His private hour with Audra began with no touch. Jin asked her to sit on the floor beside the bed while he leaned against the mattress. The asymmetry of height was practical, not symbolic. His back hurt after sleep on unfamiliar pillows.
“I have a question I may not want answered,” he said.
Audra waited.
“When Roman gives you instructions, does it make what you do with me feel mild?”
“That asks for comparison.”
“Yes.”
“Do you want to withdraw it?”
Jin examined the fear beneath the sentence. He did not need her to rank acts. He needed to state what threatened him.
“I withdraw the comparison. I am afraid my way of wanting you will be treated as recovery between more important scenes.”
Audra moved her hand halfway toward him and stopped. “Touch?”
“Not yet.”
She lowered it. “I have used care as a bridge between demands. I may do it again without noticing. You are not recovery. If my conduct says otherwise, tell me.”
“That is a promise to listen, not a promise it will never happen.”
“Correct.”
Jin's arousal had been present beneath fatigue since he entered the room. He let it become visible in language.
“I want your hand on me,” he said. “Over clothes first. I do not want to give you anything during this hour.”
Audra asked where, pressure, and whether kissing was included. Jin answered. She touched him exactly as requested and stopped when his breathing changed enough that he needed a pause. She did not praise his openness. She asked whether he wanted to continue.
“Yes. Direct contact now.”
They opened the relevant barrier, and Audra used her hand until pleasure broke through his control. Jin received without returning touch. Afterward, he asked her to sit beside him and do nothing.
She did.
At the end of the hour, Audra said, “I want more.”
“Not now.”
Disappointment crossed her face before acceptance. “All right.”
Jin kissed her once because he wanted the kiss, not because her no required consolation.
In the corridor, he encountered Roman waiting for the changed lunch time. Roman asked, “Good hour?”
“Private hour.”
Roman nodded. “Understood.”
Pair privacy held without becoming distance.
