Chapter 15
Connor's apartment contained a gray wall, six good knives, and no attempt to look available for inspection.
Amina arrived by car on a cold Sunday afternoon carrying pastries from a bakery near her studio. She had asked whether the building had an elevator and whether the bathroom route was clear. Connor had answered both and declined to send a full accessibility report on his home.
"The rug at the entrance curls on the left," he said when she arrived. "I can move it."
"Please do."
He rolled it and set it in the bedroom. An ordinary accommodation completed without applause.
They ate one pastry each at the kitchen counter and left the rest in the box. Amina learned that the northern wall was gray through three shades of white paint, that Connor collected radio plays he rarely replayed, and that he kept a bowl of pears in varying states of optimism.
"Current threshold," he said when they entered the living room.
They sat at opposite ends of the sofa. Both were sober. Both had independent transportation. Connor had cleared the route to the door and placed water on the table. Amina wore the brass ring on her right hand.
"Touch?" he asked.
"Yes. Kissing, breasts, between my legs. Ask before penetration."
"Description?"
"Sometimes. I may ask for silence."
"Command?"
"No command structure. Requests are welcome."
"Barriers?"
"Condom for penetration. We reviewed testing."
"Your body today?"
"Moderate fatigue. Numbness from left calf to two toes. Heat is the larger concern. The room is good. I may want positions changed."
"Help?"
"Offer once. Do not assume."
"Amber pauses. Closed stops. Three taps or ring stops."
"Yes. What do you want?"
Connor looked at her without polishing the answer. "To kiss you. To put my hands under your sweater. To have you touch me because you want my body, not because I paid attention correctly."
"Yes."
He crossed the distance and kissed her.
Connor did not begin slowly because quiet men owed anyone gentleness.
He kissed with hunger, one hand at the back of her neck and the other on her thigh after she nodded permission.
Amina tasted coffee and pear. His glasses shifted.
He removed them, set them on the table, and returned without becoming less himself.
She pulled his shirt free and put both hands against his chest. Lean, warm, hair narrowing over his abdomen. His body felt contained rather than delicate. When she dragged her nails lightly down his sides, Connor broke the kiss with a harsh breath.
"Again," he said.
The word was not an observation.
Amina did it again.
He lifted her sweater only after asking. Her bra followed. Connor cupped one breast, thumb circling the nipple until her back arched.
"Words?" he asked.
"Yes."
"Your skin is warm. Your nipple hardens under my thumb. You look annoyed by how much you like being told."
"I am annoyed by your satisfaction."
"That is visible too."
She caught his lower lip between her teeth.
Connor laughed into her mouth. The laugh broke the elegance she had assigned him and made desire messier, better.
They undressed each other in the living room. Amina sat to remove her trousers rather than balance on one leg. Connor did not turn away from the practical motion or make it significant. When she was naked, he knelt between her knees and asked permission before touching the outside of her left calf.
"Sensation there?"
"Pressure, not much temperature."
"And here?"
His fingers moved higher.
"More."
"Do you want my hand between your legs?"
"Yes."
His fingers slid through wet heat. Amina gripped the sofa. Connor watched her face, not as a technician gathering response but as a man aroused by it.
"Tell me," she said.
"You open wider when I use two fingers. Your hand has caught the cushion seam. You want more pressure."
"Yes."
"Ask."
"More pressure."
He gave it, thumb circling above his fingers. Amina's breath shortened.
"Stop talking," she said.
Connor stopped speaking without stopping touch. Silence concentrated everything: the small sounds from his throat, fabric shifting beneath her, traffic six floors below. He brought her to orgasm without one word, his gaze holding hers until she closed her eyes by choice.
When her body eased, Connor rested his forehead against her thigh.
"Words now?" he asked.
"Not yet. Come up here."
He stood. Amina took him in her hand. His restraint broke in a visible shudder.
"I want my mouth on you," she said.
"Yes."
She moved to the bedroom because the bed height suited her better than kneeling on the floor. Connor followed carrying her cane only after she asked him to bring it. She sat at the edge and drew him between her knees.
His body was beautiful because it was his: the tension in his abdomen, the fine scar near one hip, the way desire made his hands grip and release at his sides. Amina took him into her mouth and heard his quietness disappear.
"Enough," he said before he lost control.
She stopped.
Connor opened a condom. "Do you still want penetration?"
"Yes. Beside me, not over me."
They lay facing each other. Amina guided him inside with her own hand. The angle allowed her to move without asking her left leg to carry weight. Connor held her hip where she placed his hand.
"Words?" he asked.
"A few."
"You are looking straight at me. Your mouth opens every time I move deeper."
"And you?"
"I want to last. I am not certain I will."
The imperfect admission sent pleasure through her.
"Don't make it elegant," she said.
Connor thrust harder. "I wasn't planning to."
They found a rhythm that required no one to be neutral. Amina came with one hand between their bodies. Connor followed, eyes closed, face pressed against the curve of her shoulder.
Afterward they remained tangled until Amina's hip began to protest. She named it. They changed position. Connor brought water and turned the thermostat down one degree at her request.
"What do you want now?" he asked.
"The pastry with pistachios."
"A ruthless progression."
They ate it in bed on a plate because ordinary appetite did not diminish what had happened.
Later Amina asked him to describe one thing.
Connor considered. "You are naked in my bed with sugar on your thumb. You look pleased. You also look tired. Neither cancels the other."
She did not correct him.
In the morning, Amina woke before Connor. Gray light made the north wall look exactly as unsuccessful as he had claimed. She lay beneath his clean cotton sheet and listened to pipes, footsteps in the hall, and the child upstairs beginning scales far too early.
Connor woke when she shifted.
"Current body?" he asked, voice rough with sleep.
"Sore in useful places. Left foot quiet. Fatigue moderate. I want coffee and my own shower at home."
"I can make the first. Do you want breakfast?"
"Toast. No heroic brunch."
He made coffee and toast while she dressed. Amina sat to fasten her boots. Connor did not make the domestic sight proof of commitment. He complained that one pear had become unsalvageable overnight.
At the door, they completed the privacy check. No photograph. No device in the bedroom. No detail to be shared with Julian beyond facts affecting the group unless both agreed later. Contact remained welcome.
"Do you regret anything?" Connor asked.
"No. I would change one thing."
"What?"
"More pistachio pastry."
"A production note I can support."
On Monday, Amina returned to the studio and did not tell Celine why she looked pleased. Privacy did not require a lie. It required only that colleagues did not own explanation.
The first task was a portrait edit for a magazine that wanted to replace a subject's visible hearing aid in post. Celine had flagged the request rather than forwarding it directly to the retoucher.
"Client says the hardware distracts from the jewelry," she said.
"What does the subject release say about alteration?"
"No removal of assistive devices without renewed approval."
"Then ask the subject. Tell the client the schedule moves until the answer arrives."
At noon the answer came: keep the hearing aid, reduce one hot reflection, no reshaping. Amina made the adjustment herself. The small silver curve remained beside the emerald earring, part of the portrait rather than its lesson.
Her body began signaling fatigue at one thirty. She finished the color note, moved the next call to video, and lay down behind the smoked-oak wall for forty minutes. Pleasure had not cured the nervous system. Work had not punished sex. Monday was simply Monday.
When she woke, Connor's follow-up waited in the portal. He named what he had liked, what he wanted again, and one moment when her silence had made him uncertain. He did not ask her to reassure him retroactively.
Amina answered: I was choosing sensation, not withdrawing. Next time ask if you need current information. I liked that you stopped at enough without making me praise the stop.
He replied: Understood. I will ask. No praise required.
The exchange was shorter than the encounter and no less intimate. Amina closed the portal before writing a sentence that would have turned clarity into performance.
