Chapter 22

Nadine kissed Elias before the suite door finished closing.

The decision surprised them both. She saw it in the widening of his eyes, felt it in the half breath before his broad hands settled at her waist without drawing her closer than she had chosen.

His mouth was warm and immediately hungry.

Tenderness had led Nadine to expect patience.

Elias kissed like a man who had spent all evening telling the truth about appetite and intended to be believed.

His beard rasped against her chin. His body yielded beneath her palms without becoming passive, soft at the waist and powerful through his shoulders.

Nadine broke the kiss.

“May I take off your jacket?”

“Yes.”

She pushed it from his shoulders and hung it over a chair instead of dropping it. Elias watched.

“You may drop a garment,” he said.

“That sounds reckless.”

“I consent to wrinkling.”

Nadine pulled his shirt free of his trousers and began opening buttons. When she exposed the dense hair across his chest and the warm curve of his stomach, desire settled with satisfying weight low in her body.

“You’re beautiful,” she said.

Elias’s breath changed.

“Specific enough?”

“Not remotely.”

She smiled. “Your chest is beautiful. Your stomach. The way you make space without pretending you take up none.”

The last line reached deeper than appearance. Elias closed his eyes for a second.

“May I touch you?” she asked.

“Yes. Chest and stomach.”

Nadine placed both hands on him. Heat. Hair. A slight tremor under the muscle when her thumbs moved across his nipples.

“More pressure?”

“Yes.”

She gave it. Elias’s head tipped back, and the sound he made was rough enough to erase the last of the gentle-man fiction she had built around him.

“I want to take off your shirt,” he said. “May I?”

“Yes.”

He undressed her slowly, not to soothe her but because he liked watching each piece leave. The sweater lifted over her head. Her bra followed after he asked. Elias looked at her full breasts, the strong breadth of her shoulders, the faint lines time had drawn beside her mouth.

“You are magnificent,” he said.

The praise was not worship. It contained lust and amusement and the knowledge that she had burger grease on one trouser leg.

Nadine reached for his belt.

“May I?”

“Yes.”

She opened it and lowered the zipper. His erection pressed beneath dark briefs, unmistakable and larger than she had expected. Elias watched her look.

“Anything you would like to say?” he asked.

“I am recalibrating.”

His laugh warmed the air. “Take your time.”

Nadine asked to touch him over the fabric. He said yes. The first stroke drew his breath through his teeth.

“You like that.”

“I have provided compelling evidence.”

“I want the answer.”

“Yes. Slower.”

She slowed. Receiving his direction did not feel like Dominic’s command. Elias’s request pulled reciprocity into the center. He wanted his pleasure witnessed, not delivered to reward good care.

When Nadine reached for the waistband, he covered her wrist gently.

“Wait.”

She stopped.

“I want you naked too.”

“That sounded dangerously like fairness.”

“No scorekeeping. Just greed.”

Nadine removed her trousers and underwear.

Elias did the same. They stood facing each other without the softened lighting or artful distance younger lovers sometimes used to pretend bodies had no history.

Elias’s belly was round, his thighs thick, a pale scar crossing one knee.

Nadine’s breasts sat lower than they had at thirty, her hips full, stretch marks silvering the deep brown skin along one side.

Desire qualified none of it.

Elias asked permission to touch her breasts. Then her waist. Then between her legs. His fingers found her wet, and pleasure pulled a curse from her.

“Do not turn polite now,” he murmured.

Nadine gripped his shoulders. “I was not aware I had.”

“You’re checking my face to see whether I’m comfortable instead of telling me what you want.”

He was right. Even aroused, she had been reading him like a room.

“I want your fingers inside me,” she said. “Two, if that remains comfortable for you. I want pressure against my clit. I want to hear what this does to you.”

Elias’s expression heated. “Yes.”

He gave her one finger first, asked, then a second.

The pace built under her direction. Nadine rested one leg along the edge of the bed, opening herself, refusing to hide the work of pleasure.

Elias told her what he liked about touching her—the strength in her grip, the open concentration on her face, the way she asked without becoming smaller.

She came with her mouth against his shoulder, body tightening around his fingers. Elias held steady until she asked him to slow, then stop.

They paused for water and checked the program. Nadine still wanted penetrative sex. Elias did too. Barrier agreement unchanged. No oral contact tonight because Elias preferred to remain within the barrier scope they had discussed without adding a new fluid conversation mid-scene.

“Thank you for saying that,” Nadine said.

“Do not give me a medal.”

“Baseline virtue?”

“Exactly.”

He opened a condom and rolled it on, then looked at her. “I want you on top at first.”

“You and Dominic have unexpectedly similar taste.”

Jealousy flickered across his face. Nadine saw it and regretted the comparison immediately.

“That was careless,” she said.

“Yes.”

“Do you want to pause?”

Elias considered rather than reassuring her. “I want you to ask what I want now without making his desire part of it.”

“What do you want now?”

“You on top because I want your weight and your face. Not because anyone else did.”

“I want that too.”

The repair remained imperfect. It also kept the moment honest.

Nadine straddled him and guided his cock inside. Elias’s hands rested on the bed until she placed them on her hips. The fullness made them both go still.

“All right?” he asked.

“Yes. You?”

“Very.”

She moved. Slowly at first, then with a harder rhythm that made his openness turn raw. Elias did not become quieter as pleasure built. He asked for more weight, told her when the angle changed, praised the force of her body without turning strength into masculinity or novelty.

Nadine watched him receive. His face held effort, hunger, and the vulnerable loss of control he had asked her not to interpret away. She leaned down, pressed her mouth to his, and rode him until his hands tightened at her hips.

“May I move you?” he asked.

“Yes.”

He rolled them with controlled strength, pausing the instant the new position settled. “Still yes?”

“Yes.”

Elias moved above her, not gentle now. Playful hunger sharpened into force within the pressure she wanted. Nadine wrapped her legs around him, laughing once when the bed made an undignified squeak.

“The house will revoke our membership,” Elias said breathlessly.

“For furniture criticism?”

“Nell looks strict.”

The laughter tipped Nadine into another orgasm. Elias followed with her hand cupping the back of his neck, his forehead against hers.

Afterward, they disposed of the barrier, cleaned up together, and chose the Still Room. Nadine expected Elias to open the daylight conversation early. Instead, he lay on the wide sofa with his head in her lap and said nothing.

She combed her fingers through the short hair at his temple after asking permission. Minutes passed.

Nadine felt the urge to check whether he was comfortable, whether the jealousy had resolved, whether she had met his need. She let the questions wait.

Elias’s body grew heavier across her thighs.

“Do you want to talk?” she asked eventually.

“No.”

“Do you want me to keep touching you?”

“Yes.”

Two answers. Enough.

The next morning, they ate breakfast in the Blue Hour Salon. Elias drank coffee, checked the time, and stood after twenty minutes.

“I need an hour alone before work,” he said.

Nadine’s body registered departure as a dropped cue. “Did I do something?”

“No.”

“Is this about the comparison?”

“Not right now. I need solitude.”

She wanted to ask for a fuller report. Instead, she heard the answer he had given before they met: tenderness had hours.

“All right,” she said. “May I message this evening about the daylight conversation?”

“Yes. After seven.”

Elias kissed her once and left.

At seven-fourteen, he answered her message. They spoke about the comparison, what jealousy required, and what remained private. Elias did not punish her. He also did not erase his reaction to prove he was tender.

“I want you to know my pleasure without making me the gentle one,” he said.

“I’m learning.”

“Good. I am not asking you to have finished.”

When the call ended, Nadine looked at the role word in her notes.

Tenderness had begun to mean appetite, refusal, laughter, silence, and a man heavy in her lap because he had asked to receive.

The label was already too small.
