Chapter 24
Ravi was beautiful when he stopped performing ease.
Nadine saw it in the tension across his compact body as she removed his shirt. Strong forearms, a dusting of hair over his chest, a faint burn scar near one wrist, the soft lower curve of his stomach. He watched her with quick intelligence stripped of its usual protective humor.
“May I touch your chest?” she asked.
“Yes.”
She flattened her palms against him. Ravi’s eyes closed.
“Pressure?”
“More.”
Nadine pressed, then dragged her hands slowly down his torso. His muscles tightened under her touch. At his belt, she stopped.
“May I?”
“Yes.”
The word came rougher.
She opened his trousers and freed him, stroking once over his briefs before asking to remove them. Ravi gave another yes. His erection rose hard against his stomach, his body responding without wit to moderate the fact.
Nadine looked deliberately.
“You are allowed to say something flattering,” Ravi said.
“I’m considering specificity.”
“A cruel use of my own standards.”
“Your cock is beautiful. Your body is beautiful. I like the way you stop smiling when you want something badly.”
The last line made him inhale.
Nadine opened a condom, checked it with him, and rolled it on. She knelt between his knees because the position served the act, not because it carried submission. Ravi placed his hands at his sides until she invited one into her hair.
“No pressure,” she said. “You can touch. You do not direct my head.”
“Agreed.”
She took him into her mouth.
Ravi’s fingers flexed against her scalp. The sound he made was unguarded enough to deepen her own arousal. Nadine set the pace, listened when he asked for less depth and more pressure from her hand, and watched his face whenever she drew back.
Receiving cost him. She could see the urge to praise her, to manage the pleasure back into a gift.
“Do not take care of me right now,” she said.
Ravi’s eyes opened. “Was I?”
“You were about to ask whether my knees hurt.”
“Do they?”
“No. Ask me again in five minutes if you need the answer for consent. Not to escape receiving.”
He laughed once, breathless. “Terrifying woman.”
“Still yes?”
“Yes.”
Nadine returned to him. Ravi let his head fall back. His pleasure became messier, his hips moving only after she gave permission, his hand tightening in her hair without controlling her. When she felt him near the edge, she stopped and removed her mouth.
“I am learning from experts,” she said.
Ravi stared at her. Then laughter overtook him, full and helpless.
“That was evil,” he said.
“Do you want me to continue?”
“Yes. But not yet.”
She rose and kissed him. He tasted himself through the barrier’s faint latex and did not make the intimacy symbolic. They simply wanted each other.
Ravi asked to touch her again. Nadine said yes.
He brought her to the bed, removed the barrier used for oral contact, and cleaned his hands before changing activities.
They checked the penetrative-sex agreement.
Fresh condom. Lubricant. Nadine wanted him inside her from behind at first, with no pressure at her neck and his hands visible at her hips.
“Yes,” Ravi said.
She bent over the edge of the bed. He entered slowly, one hand braced beside hers. The angle filled her deeply. Nadine asked him to hold, adjusted her stance, and gave a fresh yes.
Ravi moved.
His rhythm had the precision of craft without turning her body into work. He asked when he wanted more speed. She answered. Nadine reached between her legs, but Ravi asked if he could take over the touch. She said no—she wanted her own hand—and he accepted without interruption.
The refusal made the scene safer and hotter. No request carried a threat to momentum.
Nadine came first, gripping the bedspread and Ravi’s forearm. He slowed at her direction, then stopped while her body settled.
“Do you want to continue?” she asked.
Ravi’s face was flushed, hair fallen over his forehead. “Yes. I want you facing me.”
They changed positions. Nadine drew him onto the bed and straddled him, echoing the act she had given Dominic and Elias without making it interchangeable. With Ravi, she held his wrists loosely against the mattress only after he asked for the sensation and made clear he could move them at any time.
“I want to receive,” he said again, as if repetition could build a new truth in his body.
Nadine rode him. She told him what she liked about his exacting hands, his quick mouth, the fear he had named instead of decorating. Ravi came with a broken sound and his hands closing around hers after she released them.
They stayed joined only as long as comfort and the barrier allowed. Cleanup happened without performance. Ravi disposed of the condom. Nadine washed the tasting materials from her skin. They changed the bed linen together after Ravi said he wanted the ordinary task shared.
In the Still Room, staff had left salted crackers, water, and two clean robes. No additional pastry. Ravi ate three crackers and looked deeply offended.
“Bad?” Nadine asked.
“Perfect. I had nothing to do with them.”
Nadine took one and read the ingredients printed on the small wrapper. “Palm oil.”
“Do not ruin my freedom.”
“You called them perfect.”
“Emotionally. They are technically bleak.”
She watched him eat a fourth anyway. The act was funny until she saw how tired he was. His shoulders had lost their upward charge. A faint flour burn at his wrist looked redder after the shower.
“Do you want to leave?” she asked.
Ravi considered. “Not yet. I want fifteen minutes where neither of us plans the next encounter.”
“Should I set a timer?”
“That is planning.”
Nadine leaned back against the sofa. For several minutes they listened to the air system and distant movement in the corridor. She did not touch him. Ravi did not produce conversation. Their bodies remained near each other without proving the scene had succeeded.
At some unmeasured point, he rested his head against her shoulder.
“Touch?” she asked.
“Your hand on my chest.”
She placed it there. His heartbeat was gradually slowing.
“I thought receiving would feel triumphant,” Ravi said.
“Does it?”
“It feels embarrassing. Also good.”
“Do you want me to reassure you?”
“No. I want you not to look away.”
Nadine turned enough to see his face. “I’m here.”
He closed his eyes. No pastry emerged to justify the closeness.
She sat beside him. “May I touch your hair?”
“Yes.”
Nadine pushed the fallen wave from his forehead.
“Being enjoyed for what I make is not the same as being known,” Ravi said.
“What would help you feel known?”
“Ask about something I did not bring into the room.”
Nadine thought of his dossier, their meeting, the cost he had disclosed. “How serious is the bakery’s cash pressure?”
Ravi stiffened slightly. “Serious enough that the condenser mattered. Not serious enough that we are failing. We have growth without enough cushion. I worry about payroll twice a month and sleep badly before tax deposits.”
Nadine’s mind produced solutions: financing, vendor terms, a patron list from theater catering, introductions to producers who ordered elaborate opening-night gifts.
She offered none.
“That sounds exhausting,” she said.
“It is also mine.”
“Do you want to tell me more?”
“Not tonight.”
“All right.”
Ravi leaned into her hand.
The next morning, Nadine stopped at a corner coffee shop near Second Rise. She did not buy an elaborate gift or arrive during the rush. She messaged first: I’m nearby. May I bring you ordinary coffee? No visit required.
Ravi replied with his order and a warning that he had four minutes.
She delivered it at the back door. He wore a white jacket streaked with flour and looked more tired than the man at Vesper House.
“This is terrible coffee,” he said after tasting.
“You chose the shop.”
“I wanted to see whether you would defend it.”
“I have no stake in the coffee.”
Ravi smiled. “Good.”
The timer in the kitchen sounded.
Nadine left before he had to ask.
For the rest of the day, she thought less about the tasting than about the moment he had let himself be useless to her pleasure and discovered she still wanted his body.
