Chapter 33
Beatriz did not ask Ren to kneel for twelve days.
At first, the absence was ordinary. They had work, pair dates, and an evening with Marcus at a small concert where authority would have been out of place. Then she noticed herself removing requests before speaking them.
At breakfast, she wanted Ren to choose her earrings for an event, a small ritual they had discussed and enjoyed.
She chose them herself. At her apartment, she wanted him to sit at her feet while she read.
She invited him to the sofa instead. When he asked whether she wanted to activate their ritual after dinner, she said she was tired.
The third time, he stopped believing her.
They were alone at Vesper House for a planned private evening. Ren stood in the aubergine sitting room wearing the bronze tie she had once praised. Beatriz had designed no scene beyond conversation and touch.
"Do you want my service tonight?" he asked.
The ritual question should have allowed her to answer honestly. Fear disguised itself as restraint.
"Not necessary."
Ren's expression cooled—not withdrawal of affection, but refusal to participate in the evasion.
"That was not the question."
"I do not want you to feel expected."
"I asked."
"Because we scheduled the room."
"No. Because I want to kneel."
Beatriz walked to the chair but did not sit. "You did not want it last time."
"Correct."
"Your body was exhausted. You were afraid to tell me."
"Also correct."
"Then perhaps I moved too quickly."
"Beatriz." Ren came closer. "Respecting my refusal does not require erasing the authority I still desire."
The sentence landed with humiliating accuracy.
"I am not erasing it."
"You have avoided every request that resembles command. You ask me whether I want water and then bring it yourself before I answer. You stopped using our earring ritual. You are treating my no as evidence that your desire was dangerous."
"I saw relief in you that night."
"Relief that affection remained. Not relief that submission had ended forever."
Beatriz crossed her arms. "I will not become a woman who makes you prove you still want it after a refusal."
"Then do not ask me to prove anything. Listen when I volunteer an answer."
She felt the room narrow around her fear. She had believed overcaution could make her harmless. Instead it made Ren's present desire subordinate to her interpretation of his past.
"What do you want tonight?" she asked.
"I want the ritual. I want to kneel. I want you to place your hand in my hair and tell me what pleased you about the last photograph I showed you. I do not want sex."
"Are you asking because I withheld authority and you fear losing it?"
Ren's mouth tightened. "You are still interpreting."
Beatriz stopped.
The universal pause word existed for activity. She used it on herself anyway. "Amber."
She sat in the chair because her knees felt suddenly uncertain. Ren remained standing.
"I am sorry," she said. "I converted one answer into a permanent decision and then called it protection. I made your current yes less trustworthy than your past no."
Ren's face softened, but he did not rush to comfort her. "Yes."
"I believe you want the ritual tonight. I am not ready to lead it well because I need to understand why I kept refusing."
"That is an honest no from you."
"It is."
"Then I accept it."
He sat on the sofa, posture upright, warmth present. Beatriz looked at the open carpet and felt grief for the lost scene. The grief did not entitle her to reclaim it before she could be attentive.
"Do you want Marcus here for the conversation?" she asked.
"Not to mediate. I want to tell him what happened because it affects the group, and I want his company."
They called. Marcus arrived forty minutes later after separately confirming that both wanted him present. He sat beside Ren, not between them.
Ren described the pattern. Beatriz described the fear that command after refusal would reveal she valued obedience more than him.
Marcus listened.
"What do you think?" Beatriz asked.
"Ren has already told you what he thinks."
"I asked what you think."
Marcus looked toward the empty carpet. "I think you made caution into a verdict. I also think you stopped before performing authority you did not feel able to hold. Both can be true."
"Do you agree with him?"
"Yes. I am not agreeing for him."
Ren's hand found Marcus's on the sofa. The gesture was support, not alliance against Beatriz.
"What do we do now?" she asked.
Marcus glanced at Ren. "Not mine to answer first."
Ren considered. "We do not reschedule tonight. I do not want the new date to become proof you remain safe. I will ask again when I want to. You will answer from that day, not from this conversation."
"Agreed."
"And until then," he said, "you may make ordinary requests without treating me like a bomb disguised as a man."
Beatriz almost laughed. "Such as?"
"Ask me to choose dinner."
"Choose dinner."
"That was suspiciously fast."
"I remain capable of command."
They ordered noodles and ate in the sitting room. No one activated a ritual. Ren leaned against Marcus for part of the evening and placed his feet in Beatriz's lap for another. Affection moved in directions no posture controlled.
Four days later, Ren called Beatriz from his studio.
"Friday," he said. "I want to reschedule. Same room. Kneeling, praise, directed touch. No sex unless we add it at the threshold."
Beatriz checked her answer.
Desire rose without panic.
"Yes," she said. "I want that too."
On Friday, he asked whether she wanted his service. She said yes. He knelt. She put her hand in his hair and told him the truth about his photograph: that he had made a temporary ramp look like an entrance rather than an apology.
Ren closed his eyes under the praise.
Neither of them mistook his pleasure for a guarantee about next time.
After the nonsexual ritual, Beatriz ended it explicitly and invited Ren onto the sofa. He chose the footstool instead because his body wanted the lower seat without authority attached.
"Did the praise feel like proof?" he asked.
"No. It felt like an observation I wanted to give."
"And my response?"
"Pleasure. Not accreditation."
Ren nodded. "Then we repaired the behavior, not your identity."
Beatriz let the sentence settle. She had wanted repair to restore certainty: she was safe, Ren was whole, the ritual remained beautiful. Instead, it restored only the next set of choices. That was less comforting and more honest.
"If I lead badly in the future, you may tell me during the scene," she said. "You do not have to wait for debrief to protect my confidence."
"I know. I may still choose debrief if the issue is not urgent."
"And if you tell Marcus first?"
"I may seek private support. He may not negotiate with you on my behalf unless I ask and you agree."
Beatriz nodded. "Pair privacy without alliance governance."
"You have made it ugly enough to be useful."
"My editorial gift."
They talked through what rescheduling had required. Ren had waited until desire returned independently. Beatriz had checked that her yes came from wanting the ritual, not wanting to prove safety. Marcus had not attended because his presence was not necessary to validate the repair.
"I may say no next time," Ren said.
"I may."
"You might be disappointed."
"Almost certainly. I have excellent plans."
He laughed and rested his head against her knee. Beatriz stroked his hair without turning the affection back into scene. The distinction was becoming embodied rather than merely understood.
