Chapter 42

Ren asked Marcus to sit at the kitchen table and did not ask him to receive anything erotic.

The distinction mattered because care outside sex was where Marcus still converted need into service fastest. He could accept a mouth on his cock more easily than a meal cooked because he was tired.

Pleasure had a defined end. Ordinary care could create debt if he did not believe love survived imbalance.

Ren set down a bowl of rice, grilled fish, and cucumber salad.

"I made dinner," he said. "I had capacity. I wanted to. You are not required to compliment the knife work."

Marcus looked at the precisely cut cucumber. "That will be difficult."

"Suffer."

They were at Ren's apartment two nights after the park. The employee vote had not yet occurred. Beatriz had sent no romantic update beyond confirmation that the complete staff packet was distributed and Ruth would govern the process.

Marcus ate. Ren waited until half the meal was gone before asking, "What would receiving look like outside an intimate scene?"

Marcus put down his fork.

"Being asked before advice is expected," he said. "If one of you wants me to listen, say listen. If you want analysis, ask whether I have room."

"Good."

"Travel decisions discussed before anyone sacrifices. Someone making an appointment or reservation occasionally without turning it into a test of whether they know me. Being allowed to say I don't know without you both becoming afraid."

"What about practical care?"

"This. Food. Water. A ride when I land late. I need the offer to include a no that does not injure the giver."

Ren nodded. "And I need service not to become proof that I am secure."

"Explain."

"When Beatriz doubts her authority, she looks at my response for evidence she is ethical. I understand why. I cannot be the instrument that proves she is a good person. My kneeling means I wanted to kneel on that day. It does not certify her character."

"Have you told her?"

"Not in those words. I will."

"Do you still need her authority?"

Ren considered the verb. Need could sound like dependency, yet avoiding it would make desire unnecessarily polite.

"Yes," he said. "I need it in the life I want with her.

Not every day. Not as a condition of functioning.

I need the intimacy of giving her authority because it reveals a part of me ordinary equality does not.

If we resume only as companions because everyone is afraid, I will be loved incompletely. "

Marcus reached across the table. "I understand."

"Careful."

He smiled. "I hear you."

Ren took his hand.

"And you?" he asked. "Do you need Beatriz?"

Marcus's answer arrived slowly. "Yes. She sees when I am useful and sometimes looks past it. She asks me to receive without pretending it is submission. She challenges the language I use to hide. I need her specific attention."

"Do you need me?"

"Yes. You make me laugh before certainty becomes superstition. You refuse my interpretations. You want me as a man, not only as steadiness."

Ren felt love press beneath his ribs.

"I need you too," he said. "Not because you guide. Because you stay warm when you are corrected. Because your biscuits are superior to your plants. Because I want your body and your questions when they are real questions."

Marcus kissed the back of his hand. "Are we choosing each other again?"

"We did not stop. I want to say it anyway. Yes."

"Yes."

They cleaned the kitchen together, not by role but by proximity. Marcus washed. Ren dried. When Marcus handed him the final bowl, Ren set it down and pulled him close.

"I want sex now," Ren said. "Equal. No authority. I want to be above you for part of it because I choose the angle, not because posture assigns rank."

Marcus's gaze warmed. "I want that. Penetration?"

"I want to be inside you if you do."

Marcus inhaled. They had not crossed that particular threshold. "Yes. Slowly. Condom."

"Current health information unchanged?"

"Unchanged. Yours?"

"Unchanged."

In the bedroom, they undressed facing each other. Ren took time with Marcus's body, kissing the shoulder where tension gathered, the gallbladder scar, the strong line of his hip. Marcus let his hands remain open until he wanted touch and asked for it.

"Your hand on my back," he said.

Ren placed it there.

Marcus kissed him deeply. Their cocks pressed together. Ren stroked both for a while, then went down on Marcus, drawing pleasure without trying to empty him of uncertainty. Marcus asked him to stop before he came.

"I want you inside me," Marcus said.

Ren looked up. "Still yes?"

"Yes."

They prepared without assigning expertise.

Marcus guided Ren's fingers, told him pressure and pace, and laughed when Ren called the lubricant bottle architecturally incompetent.

When Marcus was ready, he lay on his back with pillows supporting him.

Ren put on a condom and settled between his thighs.

"I will move," Marcus said. "You follow first."

"Yes."

Marcus guided the head of Ren's cock to his body and pressed back. Ren entered slowly, watching every change in his face.

"Pause," Marcus said.

Ren stopped.

Marcus breathed, one hand at Ren's hip. "More."

Ren pressed deeper until Marcus held all of him. The intimacy struck with unexpected force. Marcus's eyes were open, uncertainty and desire visible together.

"Good?" Ren asked.

"Yes. Stay there."

They remained still. Ren leaned down and kissed him. No interpretation. No praise meant to advance. Only contact while Marcus's body chose the next answer.

"Move," Marcus said.

Ren drew back and entered again. Marcus controlled the first rhythm with his hand at Ren's hip. Then he loosened it.

"Your pace now."

Ren moved with growing confidence, not dominant, not submissive, attentive to his lover. Marcus wrapped one leg around him. The angle deepened. A sound left Marcus that Ren felt through his entire body.

"Touch yourself," Ren said, then corrected. "Would you like to? I want to watch."

Marcus smiled despite the strain. "Yes."

He wrapped a hand around his cock. Ren watched him stroke while receiving Ren's body. Their desire met without Beatriz as audience or absence. Marcus came first, his body tightening around Ren, orgasm spilling across his stomach.

Ren slowed, waiting.

"Keep going," Marcus said. "I want you to come."

"Yes?"

"Yes."

Ren moved faster. Marcus held his face and kissed him through the final thrusts. Ren came inside the condom with Marcus's mouth on his, equality made physical through separate answers.

Afterward, Ren withdrew carefully and disposed of the condom. He brought warm cloths and asked before cleaning Marcus's skin. Marcus accepted.

They lay side by side rather than assigning one body to hold the other.

"Different?" Ren asked.

"Very."

"Good?"

"Yes. Vulnerable. Mine."

Ren touched his cheek. "Thank you for telling me."

The men's love was secure without becoming a weapon aimed at Beatriz. It needed no threat that they could survive without her, though they could. It needed only the truth that each bond deserved to live in full.
