Chapter 30

Theo knew Mina and Ezra had kissed because Mina's mouth looked kissed.

She arrived at his apartment the following evening wearing jeans, a black sweater, and an expression too carefully ordinary.

Their agreement protected pair privacy. She owed him no description.

He had no right to ask which touch had happened, how long it lasted, or whether Ezra's voice changed at close range.

Knowing the boundary did not prevent imagination.

"Hello," Mina said.

"Hello."

He kissed her cheek. She had asked him not to use their first contact as a test of whether familiar desire remained available.

They cooked noodles together. Theo chopped vegetables; Mina made the sauce and objected to his belief that recipe quantities were merely opening positions. Conversation stayed with work until the food was on the table.

Then Theo said, "I am glad the date ended safely. I am also hurting."

Mina set down her chopsticks. "What do you need from me?"

"Not a report. Not a promise that every pace will be identical. I need you to hear that consenting to the possibility did not prevent the reality from hurting."

"I hear you."

"I imagined the kiss."

She did not confirm it.

"And then I resented him for being new," Theo continued. "Which is unfair. He cannot arrive old."

"Fairness does not require you to enjoy it."

"No."

"Do you want to pause expansion?"

Theo considered. "Not tonight. I want our night to remain ours. I want to know that I can feel jealousy here without every pleasure becoming reassurance."

"Yes."

They finished dinner. Mina washed dishes while Theo dried. The ordinariness became almost unbearably tender. When the kitchen was clean, Mina turned and held out her hand.

"Bedroom?"

"Yes."

"Sex?"

"Yes. I want familiar things and one new thing I choose."

Her eyes warmed. "Tell me upstairs."

In the bedroom, Theo removed Mina's sweater and kissed the line of her shoulder. He knew the small sounds her body made now, the pressure she liked at her breasts, the way she became quieter just before asking for more. Familiarity did not make her predictable. It made attention more exact.

"What is the new thing?" she asked when they were naked.

Theo sat against the headboard. "I want you to tell me three things you want from me tonight. Then I want you to ask what I want without assuming the answer is to serve them."

Mina climbed onto the bed and straddled his thighs without taking him inside her.

"I want your mouth on my breasts," she said. "I want your hand between my legs. I want to ride you until I come."

Heat surged through Theo.

"What do you want?" she asked.

"I want all three. I also want your mouth on me. Not as payment. I want to watch you choose it."

"Yes."

Mina kissed him first, then moved down his body with deliberate attention.

When she took him into her mouth, Theo gripped the sheet and told her exactly what felt good.

She changed pressure when he asked, stopped when he touched her shoulder twice and said he needed a minute, then smiled against his thigh at his lack of endurance.

"Do not become pleased with yourself," he said.

"Impossible."

He pulled her up and kissed her, tasting himself on her mouth without shame.

Then he lowered her onto her back and gave her the things she had named.

His mouth closed over one nipple while his fingers moved between her thighs, slow until she asked for harder, circular pressure until her hips began to lift.

"Do you want to come this way?" he asked.

"No. I want you inside."

They reached for a condom together. Mina rolled it over him, added lubricant, and took him as she had requested. Theo held her hips but did not establish the rhythm. She moved over him, hair falling across her face, soft body illuminated by the bedside lamp.

He wanted to tell himself no new kiss could threaten this. The thought would make their sex answer a question neither body had asked.

Instead he said, "I love watching you take what you asked for."

Mina's eyes opened. "I love that you ask for things inside my lead."

She rode him harder. Theo pressed his thumb to her clitoris only after she nodded. Her body tightened around him, pleasure breaking across her face.

"Stay with me," she said.

"I'm here."

She came. Theo followed after she continued moving and told him she wanted it.

Afterward they showered, drank water, and returned to bed beneath clean sheets. Mina rested with one leg across his.

"Do you want reassurance now?" she asked.

"I want truth."

"I kissed him. I am not giving you details because they belong to that pair. I came here tonight because I wanted you, not to restore balance. I love you. I still want to continue assessing the trio."

The truth hurt and steadied him at once.

"Thank you," Theo said. "I love you. I still choose assessment. I may hurt again."

"You may."

They slept.

Theo woke before her and watched the ceiling rather than her face. Jealousy had not disappeared after sex. It had changed from sharp image to low ache. He could feel pleasure in Mina's sleeping warmth and still dislike that another man had kissed her.

When she woke, he told her.

"I am still hurting," he said. "Last night was ours and did not fix it."

Mina's hand remained in his. "Thank you for saying it."

"I don't want another sexual reassurance tonight."

"Then we won't have sex tonight. Do you want dinner?"

"No. I want my own evening. Friday remains ours unless we change it. Tonight is not Friday."

"All right."

They rose, dressed, and made coffee. Mina left after a kiss he wanted. Theo spent the evening alone at his studio reviewing a maintenance plan, the ache accompanying him without being promoted to prophecy.

On Friday, Theo and Mina attended the winter exhibit he had requested.

Mina did not ask whether the date felt as novel as one with Ezra.

Theo did not ask whether she had returned to the bookstore.

They stood before a suspended installation of paper branches and disagreed about whether it understood trees.

"It isn't attempting botany," Mina said.

"Then it should stop using branches."

"You are professionally jealous of paper."

"Paper has strong publicists."

They laughed, held hands, and ended the evening without sex because Theo had asked for a night where physical familiarity did not become proof of his place.

At Mina's door he said, "I still want the trio assessment. I also want this date to remain complete without what comes next."

"It is complete," she said.

Theo believed her because she had lived the evening rather than rushing through it toward reassurance.
