Chapter 32
Ezra showed Mina the studio only after the last scheduled broadcast ended and while another employee remained in the building.
He had asked Robin to stay in her office for twenty minutes. He gave no romantic explanation beyond the fact that he would have a personal guest. She agreed, set her own departure time, and told him she would not become a chaperone merely because he had developed manners.
"Every recorder is powered down," Ezra told Mina at the control-room door. "The engineer confirmed it and left. The building's ordinary security cameras cover entrances and halls, not studios. They do not record audio. We will not touch sexually here."
"Agreed. Why did you want me to see it?"
He looked through the glass at the microphone suspended above the desk. "Because you know the public version of my voice. I want you to see where it becomes public and where the equipment stops."
Mina entered. She did not sit in his chair until he asked whether she wanted to.
"Yes," she said.
He adjusted nothing for her. No headphone. No red light. She rested her hands on the desk and looked at the dark console beyond the glass.
"It feels smaller," she said.
"Most voices do when you see the room."
"Do you ever feel protected by the microphone?"
"Often. It creates an exact audience that cannot interrupt me until later."
"And afterward?"
"Afterward the audience writes back as if listening was reciprocal disclosure."
Mina turned in the chair. "What do you want left unspoken tonight?"
The question moved through him.
"Serena's last illness," he said. "Jordan's response to my dating life. The reason I chose tonight rather than another night as symbolic proof."
"All right."
"What do you want left unspoken?"
"Comparisons. Theo's body, his touch, the differences I notice. They belong inside the relevant pair, not as information one man uses to position himself."
"Agreed."
"What do you want spoken?"
Ezra looked at her in the chair where he had delivered hundreds of controlled sentences.
"What you want me to do," he said. "What feels good. When silence is pleasure and when it is distance."
Her gaze heated. "I can do that."
They left after fifteen minutes. In the lobby, Robin called goodnight from the elevator and departed before them. Ezra and Mina walked two blocks apart from any station event, then took separate cars to Vesper House.
The private suite was not the room Mina and Theo had used. Ezra had requested that distinction without asking where their room was. This one held dark blue walls, warm lamps, a sitting area, and a bedroom behind a sliding panel. No microphone, speaker, or smart device was present.
They had completed a pair-specific health and privacy check that morning.
Current results. Condoms for intercourse.
No barriers for oral unless either changed the answer.
No photography or recording. Amber, Closed, three taps, brass ring.
Ezra needed a verbal check before Mina touched his face during intense moments; strangers had grabbed his jaw after recognizing his voice.
Mina wanted a question if she became too composed.
They stood inside the closed door.
"Still yes?" Mina asked.
"Yes. You?"
"Yes."
Ezra touched her scarf. "May I take this off?"
"Yes."
He unwound it slowly and set it on the chair. Mina wore a black dress with a high neckline and long sleeves. The restraint made his desire immediate.
"May I kiss you?"
"Yes."
Their first kiss at the bookstore had ended under rain and public light. This one deepened without witnesses. Mina slid her hands beneath his jacket. Ezra held her waist, then asked before cupping the back of her head.
"Yes," she whispered.
He kissed her until language became breath. Her body softened against him. When he moved his mouth to her throat, she said, "Lower," and he obeyed, kissing the skin revealed by the dress's neckline.
"I want it off," he said.
"Take it off."
He found the zipper at her back. The dress opened, slipping from her shoulders.
Mina stepped out wearing deep red lace. Ezra had imagined her body after the first invitation and hated himself for it.
The reality contained none of imagination's entitlement.
Soft stomach. full breasts. compact strength.
A woman standing because she had chosen the room today.
"Tell me," she said.
"You are beautiful. I want to touch every place I can see. I don't expect every place to be available."
"My breasts. My waist. My thighs. Ask before between them."
Ezra touched what she offered. His hands moved over her slowly, not because slowness was inherently reverent but because he needed to learn. Mina's nipple tightened beneath his thumb. She asked for more pressure. He gave it.
"Your clothes," she said.
"What do you want?"
"Everything off except your briefs. Then stand where I can look."
Heat moved down his spine. "Yes."
He undressed. Mina watched with a frankness that made performance impossible. When he stood before her, she touched his chest, followed the line of a scar near his ribs.
"May I ask?"
"Not tonight."
"All right."
No disappointment. Ezra kissed her again because relief had become desire.
Mina slipped her fingers beneath the waistband of his briefs. "May I?"
"Yes."
She freed him and wrapped her hand around his erection. Ezra exhaled her name.
"Do you like hearing me say it?" he asked.
"Yes. Not as broadcast voice. Yours."
"This is mine."
He placed his hand over hers, showed her the pressure he wanted, then released control back to her. Mina stroked him until his hips moved.
"Stop," he said.
She stopped at once. "Check?"
"Green. I want to slow down. I want you on the bed."
"Yes."
In the bedroom, Mina lay back against the pillows. Ezra removed her bra, kissed both breasts, learned the difference between the sensitivity of each nipple. He moved down her stomach and stopped at the lace edge of her panties.
"May I take these off?"
"Yes. Then use your mouth."
The directness nearly shattered him.
He drew the lace down her legs, settled between her thighs, and looked up.
"Still yes?"
"Yes, Ezra."
He kissed her inner thigh, then put his mouth on her. Mina opened with a sound she did not contain. Ezra used his tongue with slow precision, asked for direction, changed when she said firmer and higher. Her hands gripped the sheet rather than his head.
"Touch me," he said. "Hair is all right."
She slid one hand into his hair. The contact made him groan against her, and Mina's hips lifted.
"Again," she said.
He repeated the pressure. She spoke through the rise of pleasure: yes, there, do not stop. Ezra listened, keeping the rhythm even when the urge to make the moment dramatic entered him. Her orgasm arrived as a long tremor and a low, astonished curse.
He remained until she tugged gently. "Come up."
Ezra wiped his mouth with the towel beside the bed and moved over her. Mina kissed him deeply, tasting herself, then asked, "Intercourse?"
"Yes. Condom."
She retrieved one and rolled it over him after he nodded. Ezra added lubricant. Mina opened her legs, but before he entered she placed a hand against his chest.
"I want to say something."
"Say it."
"This is not the completion of August. This is tonight."
Emotion struck beneath desire. "Yes. Tonight."
"Still want it?"
"Yes."
He entered slowly. Mina was warm and tight around him, her breath catching at the first stretch. Ezra stopped.
"Amber?"
"No. Pause where you are."
He held still. When she moved her hips, he asked before continuing.
"Yes. More."
He pressed deeper. Their rhythm developed through speech rather than intuition mythologized after the fact. Mina wanted slower strokes and more weight. Ezra asked before pinning her hand lightly to the mattress with his, not restraint, only pressure she could leave.
"Yes," she said. "Keep holding me there."
He did. Her eyes remained on his. No audience. No engineer behind glass. No sentence needed to survive the room.
"Tell me when you're close," Mina said.
"I will."
She touched herself with her free hand. Ezra watched pleasure build across her face while he moved inside her.
"Now," she whispered. "Harder."
He gave her more. Mina came with his name broken across two breaths. Ezra followed after asking whether she wanted him to continue through her orgasm. She said yes. He thrust once, twice, and came with his face against her shoulder.
Afterward he released her hand immediately and checked the skin. No mark.
"Good?" he asked.
"Very. You?"
"Good. Overwhelmed. Green."
They cleaned up. Ezra brought water and fruit. Mina asked for quiet but wanted his hand on her calf. He sat beside her with that contact and said nothing for twelve minutes.
Later, beneath the blanket, Mina asked, "Do you want to stay?"
"Yes, if morning remains private and we leave separately."
"Agreed."
Ezra turned off the lamp.
The dark held no recorder. Nothing needed to be said for someone elsewhere to understand it.
