Chapter 47 #2

Theo said, "I liked the group message. It let me know without asking. Different answers."

No rule could replace the questions.

They also reviewed the sexual sequence for anything that had felt more compliant than wanted.

Theo had agreed to Ezra's presence during his kiss with Mina and had genuinely wanted it; he did not want that presence assumed next time.

Ezra had enjoyed waiting while Mina touched Theo because the waiting held a defined future request; he would not consent to an open-ended spectator role.

Mina had led because all three requested it, not because leadership permanently belonged to her.

Althea recorded the updated preferences as current, not durable. VK-141 was deactivated again when they left the suite. Another use would require another activation. Repair did not create permanent access.

Friday belonged to Mina and Theo. They went to his apartment, ordered dumplings from the place Nadia had used during the pause, and ate at the drafting table. Mina noticed the mug returned to the shelf and said nothing. Theo caught her glance.

"I put it away the night I left," he said. "I put it back after we reconciled."

"May I ask what it meant?"

"That I wanted the shelf not to surprise me. Then that I wanted the mug. Not a referendum."

"All right."

They spent an hour reviewing photographs from the garden site.

This time professional work appeared during romance because Theo invited it and the contract decision was complete.

Mina asked questions as a future user, not a board member.

When she suggested a flowering shrub, Theo rejected it for soil conditions.

"I am chief executive of a funeral home," she said. "Surely that creates botanical authority."

"It creates access to excellent compost, which is not the same."

They kissed against the drafting table. Theo wanted sex and said so. Mina wanted him and asked whether the scene could be theirs without group repair analysis afterward.

"Yes," he said. "Health check tomorrow. Relationship analysis Monday."

They went to bed and made love with the ease of remembered bodies changed by absence. No one watched. No group symbolism entered. When Theo asked Mina to stay, she said yes because she wanted the night, not because leaving would threaten his visibility.

In the morning, he woke with her hand beneath his shirt and no lesson waiting to be extracted from it.

Ezra's pair date occurred Sunday afternoon at a used-record store followed by his apartment. He showed Mina the shelf he and Jordan had assembled backward. She crouched to inspect it.

"I see no problem."

"That is because I removed and reversed the shelf before you arrived."

"Then why tell me?"

"I want credit for growth."

"Respecting your own furniture does not earn future access."

He laughed and kissed her.

They had agreed before the date that Mina would leave by ten and not sleep over. At nine, desire had made the limit inconvenient. Ezra asked whether he wanted to revise it. The answer surprised him.

"No. I want an ending that belongs to me," he said. "I want to miss you after a good night without treating the missing as a problem."

Mina put on her coat. "Walk me down?"

"Yes."

At the building door, she asked how he wanted the arrival check handled.

"Direct message to me," he said. "You can tell the group you are home only if you would have told Theo anyway."

"Understood."

"And Mina?"

"Yes?"

"I love you. I am not saying it because Theo has returned or because sex made the structure valid. I have known during the pause."

Joy entered her so abruptly that she held the doorframe.

"May I touch you?"

"Yes."

She held his face. "I love you. The answer began before tonight too."

They kissed once more. Mina left at ten.

She told Theo about the new health-relevant category at the next logistics check: love had been spoken in the Mina-Ezra pair, and both authorized the fact—not the wording or scene—to be shared. Theo sat quietly.

"What do you need?" Mina asked.

"A minute. Not rescue."

She waited.

"I am happy for you," he said. "I am also afraid the word changes gravity."

Ezra replied, "It changes my pair. It does not change your history or group authority. If you need different pacing, ask."

Theo took a moment. "Keep the group Sunday. I want my Friday. I do not want a compensatory declaration from Mina."

"Received," she said.

Two days later, Theo told Ezra over coffee that his first reaction had passed without anyone engineering it.

"Good," Ezra said.

"You can be more pleased."

"I am trying not to make your emotional regulation about me."

"It is unbearable when you have principles before caffeine."

Their friendship survived the joke and the love declaration it did not need to contain.

The first shared Sunday after repair included no sex.

They visited a museum, argued over which entrance was accessible, and separated for an hour because Theo wanted the garden wing while Ezra wanted an exhibit about sound.

Mina went alone to the textile rooms. They met at the café at the agreed time.

No one had used separation to test whether the others returned.

That evening, Ezra cooked and left by nine. Theo left at nine fifteen because he wanted his own bed. Mina stood alone in her apartment among three washed plates and felt neither abandoned nor secretly relieved.

She sent two different messages. To Ezra: Home remains good. I loved dinner and I love you. Sleep well. To Theo: Thank you for telling me the sound exhibit exhausted you before you disappeared into politeness. I loved the garden argument. Friday?

Ezra answered with a moon. Theo answered yes.

No message proved balance. Each reached the person it named.

Three present answers created the next week, not a constitution immune to change.

No one requested forever. Their yeses belonged to the next honest span of time.
